Key Information

History

[edit]

The station was inaugurated on May 1, 1976, under the call letters DYLA-FM. At that time, it carried the branding as LA 93.1 with its slogan Your Lovely Alternative, airing an easy listening format.

In 1992, it changed its call letters to DYWF and rebranded as 93.1 Smash FM. It aired a Modern Rock format.

In September 1997, Mareco Broadcasting Network acquired the station's airtime lease and relaunched it as 93.1 Crossover with a Smooth AC format. At the time MBNI took operations, Crossover went on the air on this frequency.

In 2003, Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation took full control of the station and renamed it back to 93.1 Smash FM with the same format. Meanwhile, Crossover moved to the then-newly acquired 90.7 FM, which was formerly owned by UBSI.

On September 1, 2009, it rebranded as 93.1 Club Radio, becoming the city's first and only FM radio station playing an all-dance format.[4]

In February 2013, the station rebranded back to Smash FM and switched to a mass-based format.

On July 27, 2013, Brigada Mass Media Corporation, owner of Brigada Newspaper & its flagship station in General Santos, took over the station's operations and relaunched the station as 93.1 Brigada News FM under the helm of former RMN Cebu and DYKC radio announcer, station manager of the station, current Area Manager for Visayas and founder of ANAKK Inc., Raul del Prado. It was formally launched on October 1, 2013.

On December 16, 2021, Brigada News FM went off the air due to aftermath of Typhoon "Rai" (Odette) in the evening, which damaged the station's building and transmitter bought by the said typhoon. However, at the end of the year, it returned on-air just before the New Year's Day 2022.

In August 2022, the station transferred its transmitter site from Winland Tower Condominium along Juana Osmeña Ext. to Mt. Busay for better reception.

On May 15, 2023, it began simulcasted Mareco-owned 90.7 FM during the afternoon and overnight shifts as part of its transition. On June 18, after Brigada News FM Cebu shifted its full-time operations to 90.7 FM, this frequency was downgraded to a repeater of the latter until August 14, 2023, when it went off the air for the second time as Brigada's lease with Vimcontu had expired.

In January 2024, the Philippine Collective Media Corporation took over the station's operations. It had its official launch on January 13 under the FM Radio Network with a concert held at Gaisano Mall of Cebu.[5]

On May 6, 2024, ABS-CBN's flagship newscast TV Patrol begin airing on this station, along with other selected Favorite Music Radio stations nationwide.[6]

On June 3, 2024, after months of test broadcast, FM Radio Cebu began its own local programming.

DYWF (93.1 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Cebu City, Philippines, broadcasting on the 93.1 MHz frequency to serve Metro Cebu and surrounding areas.[1][2] The station first went on air in 1992 under Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation and has since operated with a power output of 10 kilowatts, featuring formats such as modern rock, crossover music, and news-talk programming.[3][4] Over its history, DYWF has undergone multiple rebrandings and changes in operation, including as Smash FM in the 1990s and 2000s, Club FM, and Brigada News FM Cebu starting in 2013 after acquisition by entities affiliated with Brigada Mass Media Corporation.[3][5] In 2024, the FMR Network took over operations, relaunching it as FM Radio 93.1 Cebu with a focus on contemporary hits, though the station experienced sign-offs in early 2025.[6][7]

History

Origins and early formats (1976–1992)

DYLA-FM, the predecessor to DYWF, was established by Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation on May 1, 1976, as the FM counterpart to its existing AM station DYLA in Cebu City.[8][6] Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation served as the media arm of the Visayas-Mindanao Confederation of Trade Unions, a labor organization founded in 1967 to advocate for workers' rights in the region.[8] The station operated on 93.1 MHz under the call sign DYLA-FM, adopting the branding LA 93.1 with the slogan "Your Lovely Alternative."[6] It primarily aired an easy listening format, featuring soft adult contemporary music aimed at a broad, middle-aged audience in Cebu and surrounding areas.[6] This programming emphasized mellow tracks, light news updates, and occasional public service announcements aligned with the union's labor-focused mission, though commercial music dominated the schedule.[8] Throughout its initial run from 1976 to 1992, LA 93.1 maintained a consistent easy listening approach without major format shifts, positioning itself as one of Cebu's early FM outlets during a period when FM radio was expanding in the Philippines to complement AM's talk and news dominance.[6] The station's operations were based in Cebu City, broadcasting at a power sufficient to cover Metro Cebu, and it catered to listeners seeking relaxed, non-intrusive entertainment amid the martial law era's media restrictions under President Ferdinand Marcos.[8] By 1992, amid evolving market demands for youth-oriented content, Vimcontu rebranded the station, changing its call letters to DYWF to launch a modern rock format under Smash FM.[6]

Launch of Smash FM and initial music programming (1992–1997)

In 1992, Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation relaunched the 93.1 MHz frequency in Cebu City under the new call sign DYWF, branding it as 93.1 Smash FM with a modern rock format designed to appeal to younger audiences.[6][9] This shift marked the station's entry into contemporary music broadcasting, differentiating it from prevailing easy listening and adult contemporary stations in the region.[10] The initial programming emphasized alternative and modern rock tracks, alongside pop selections to broaden listenership among Cebuano youth during the early 1990s.[11] Smash FM's playlist drew from international and emerging local rock influences, positioning it as a vibrant alternative in Cebu's FM landscape, which at the time featured limited rock-oriented outlets.[6] The station operated from facilities owned by Vimcontu, maintaining a focus on high-energy music blocks without extensive talk segments, fostering a niche for rock enthusiasts in a market dominated by pop and OPM-heavy formats.[9] By mid-decade, Smash FM had established a loyal following through consistent rock and pop rotations, though specific airplay data from this era remains undocumented in available records.[11] The format persisted until September 1997, when ownership transitioned to Mareco Broadcasting Network, prompting a rebrand to Crossover FM and a pivot toward adult contemporary programming.[10] This period solidified Smash FM's role as an early adopter of youth-targeted rock in Cebu, influencing subsequent FM evolutions despite its relatively short initial run.[6]

Transition to Crossover and adult contemporary focus (1997–2003)

In September 1997, DYWF 93.1 FM, owned by Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation, entered an airtime lease agreement with Mareco Broadcasting Network, Inc. (MBNI), leading to a rebranding from Smash FM's modern rock format to 93.1 Crossover.[6] This transition marked a deliberate pivot toward a smooth adult contemporary (Smooth AC) focus, featuring playlists dominated by smooth jazz, R&B, soul, and select pop tracks with Latin influences.[6] The new format aimed at sophisticated, adult listeners preferring mellow, instrumental-heavy content over the high-energy rock that had defined the station since 1992, reflecting MBNI's strategy to import its national Crossover network—known for blending jazz fusion, rhythm and blues, and easy-listening pop—to Cebu City's market.[6] Programming emphasized non-vocal tracks like bossa nova and blues-infused selections during daytime slots, with occasional vocal R&B and soul hits in evenings to maintain broad appeal without aggressive promotion.[6] Under this arrangement, DYWF's studios in Cebu handled local production while adhering to MBNI's curated network standards, prioritizing audio quality and minimal commercial interruptions. The Crossover era on 93.1 FM endured through 2003, sustaining listener engagement among urban professionals and older demographics amid competition from pop-oriented stations, before Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation terminated the lease and restored Smash FM's rock identity.[6] This shift prompted MBNI to relocate the Crossover brand to 90.7 FM, formerly occupied by another licensee, allowing DYWF to realign with its origins while the adult contemporary niche persisted elsewhere in the market.[6]

Revival of Smash FM and rock-oriented content (2003–2009)

In 2003, Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation assumed full operational control of DYWF, prompting a reversion to the Smash FM branding previously used from 1992 to 1997, and reinstating a modern rock format aimed at youth demographics in Cebu.[6] This revival emphasized alternative and rock genres, including both international acts and emerging local Bisaya rock (bisrock) artists, differentiating it from the prior adult contemporary focus under the Crossover moniker. The station's programming highlighted high-energy rock playlists, with DJs such as Ramil Dizon (known on-air as DJ Ram) hosting segments that promoted listener interaction and bisrock talent, contributing to its identity as "Cebu's Rock Fortress." Reception logs from the period confirm broadcasts featuring classic and contemporary rock tracks, such as those by John Parr and Peter Gabriel, alongside local content.[12] This rock-oriented era persisted until September 1, 2009, when the format shifted to dance music under the Club Radio rebrand.[9]

Club Radio era and dance music emphasis (2009–2013)

On September 1, 2009, DYWF transitioned from its previous modern rock format under the Smash FM branding to Club Radio 93.1, marking a deliberate shift toward an all-dance music emphasis.[6][13] This reformat positioned the station as Cebu City's inaugural FM outlet dedicated exclusively to dance genres, including house music, filling a niche absent from local competitors at the time.[6] The change was managed under Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation ownership, aiming to capture a younger, nightlife-oriented audience through continuous playback of contemporary dance tracks.[9] The Club Radio era emphasized high-energy dance programming, featuring the latest international and local hits in electronic dance music (EDM) and house subgenres to appeal to club-goers and urban listeners in Metro Cebu.[6] Unlike broader contemporary hits stations, its playlist prioritized rhythmic, beat-driven content without significant integration of non-dance elements, which differentiated it in the Visayas market.[13] This focus aligned with global trends in electronic music rising in popularity during the late 2000s, though specific listener metrics or ratings data for the period remain undocumented in available records. The station's on-air identity promoted itself as the "hippest" and "sexiest" dance outlet, underscoring a vibrant, party-centric vibe.[14] By early 2013, the dance format waned amid ownership and market shifts, leading to a brief reversion to Smash FM in February before a full pivot away from music programming later that year.[5] The four-year Club Radio stint thus represented a targeted experiment in genre-specific broadcasting for DYWF, contrasting its prior rock and contemporary phases while highlighting evolving listener preferences in Cebu.[15]

Brigada News FM period and shift to news-talk (2013–2023)

In July 2013, Brigada Mass Media Corporation secured an airtime lease with Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation to operate DYWF (93.1 FM) in Cebu City, reformatting the station from its prior dance and electronic music emphasis under the Club Radio branding to a news-talk format as 93.1 Brigada News FM.[6] This transition aligned with Brigada's broader expansion strategy, which began acquiring and reformatting stations across the Philippines earlier that year to prioritize public service-oriented broadcasting over entertainment-focused content.[15] The rebranding emphasized hard news delivery, public affairs discussions, traffic reporting, and listener-driven segments addressing community issues, marking a departure from the station's music-centric history since 2009.[6] The station officially launched under its new format on October 1, 2013, featuring programming such as morning drive-time shows with legal consultations, midday news blocks, and evening talk segments on local governance and social concerns, consistent with Brigada's network-wide model of rapid-response journalism and advocacy.[6] Over the decade, 93.1 Brigada News FM Cebu built a reputation for on-the-ground reporting during events like typhoons and elections, often outperforming competitors in audience share by focusing on verifiable local developments rather than national syndication.[16] Nielsen ratings data from 2023 confirmed its position as the leading FM station in Cebu, the sole news-talk outlet in the top 10, reflecting sustained listener engagement through interactive formats that prioritized empirical updates over opinion-heavy commentary.[16] By mid-2023, with the airtime lease expiring, Brigada News FM Cebu simulcast portions of its content on 90.7 FM (DYAC) as a preparatory move, fully transitioning operations there in June to continue the news-talk format under a new agreement with Mareco Broadcasting Network, thereby concluding the DYWF era.[6] This period solidified Brigada's footprint in Cebu media, emphasizing causal links between timely information dissemination and community resilience, though reliant on lease arrangements that introduced operational dependencies on the underlying licensee.[3]

Rebranding to FM Radio 93.1 and return to music (2023–present)

Following the expiration of its airtime lease agreement with Brigada Mass Media Corporation, DYWF ceased news-talk broadcasts as 93.1 Brigada News FM Cebu on June 18, 2023, after a decade in that format. The station went off the air on August 14, 2023, ending its period focused on news, public affairs, commentary, and limited music playback.[6] In January 2024, the Philippine Collective Media Corporation (PCMC) took over operations of the frequency, previously held under Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation. DYWF relaunched on January 13, 2024, rebranded as FM Radio 93.1 Cebu (also known as Favorite Music Radio), shifting back to a music-centric format akin to its earlier incarnations such as Smash FM and Club Radio. This marked the station's return to entertainment programming after the news-oriented Brigada era, emphasizing diverse genres including rock, pop, jazz, blues, country, and folk across various eras.[6][5][17] The FM Radio format incorporated segments on Philippine culture, history, and lifestyle, differentiating it from pure contemporary hits stations while prioritizing musical content over talk. PCMC integrated the station into its expanding FMR Network, which operates similar music-focused outlets in other regions. Broadcasts continued under this branding until the station signed off on April 16, 2025.[6][7]

Ownership and Operations

Ownership history and union affiliations

DYWF has been owned by Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation since its licensing in 1976, with no recorded changes in formal ownership.[18] Vimcontu functions as the broadcast arm of the Visayas-Mindanao Confederation of Trade Unions (VIMCONTU), a labor federation established to represent workers in the southern Philippines, emphasizing advocacy for trade union rights and workers' welfare through media outreach.[8] Operational management of the station has shifted via lease agreements while ownership stayed with Vimcontu. On July 27, 2013, Brigada Mass Media Corporation assumed operations, reformatting DYWF as a news-talk outlet under the Brigada News FM brand, which continued until early 2023.[6] In January 2024, Philippine Collective Media Corporation took over operations, reintroducing a music format as FM Radio 93.1 Cebu, with a launch on January 13, 2024.[6] These arrangements reflect Vimcontu's strategy of partnering with external operators to sustain the station amid varying market demands, without altering its union-rooted ownership structure.

Operational partnerships and management changes

DYWF has operated under various airtime lease agreements with third-party broadcasters, managed by Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation as the licensee since its inception as a media arm of the Visayas-Mindanao Confederation of Trade Unions.[8] These partnerships have facilitated format shifts and management handovers without altering formal ownership. In September 1997, Mareco Broadcasting Network secured the airtime lease, transitioning the station to an adult contemporary format under the Crossover branding.[19] By 2003, operations reverted directly under Vimcontu management, reviving the Smash FM rock format.[20] A significant management change occurred on September 1, 2009, when the station rebranded to Club Radio 93.1, emphasizing dance music, still under Vimcontu's oversight but with adjusted programming leadership.[21] On July 27, 2013, Brigada Mass Media Corporation assumed operational control via a blocktime agreement with Vimcontu, converting DYWF to a news-talk outlet as 93.1 Brigada News FM and expanding Brigada's regional footprint.[6] Brigada's lease expired in mid-2023, prompting a brief period as a repeater for Brigada's shifted operations on 90.7 FM before going silent in August 2023.[22] In January 2024, Philippine Collective Media Corporation (PCMC) entered a new operational partnership with Vimcontu, relaunching the frequency on January 13 as FM Radio 93.1 Cebu with a music-focused format, marking the latest management transition.[6] [15] This arrangement aligns with PCMC's expansion strategy in the Visayas region.[23]

Programming and Formats

Historical format evolutions

DYWF 93.1 FM initiated its modern era in 1992 by adopting the Smash FM branding and a modern rock format, emphasizing alternative and rock music to appeal to younger listeners in Cebu.[6] In September 1997, following an airtime lease acquisition by Mareco Broadcasting Network, the station transitioned to Crossover 93.1, shifting to a smooth adult contemporary format that incorporated smooth jazz, R&B, soul, and similar genres targeted at a more mature, sophisticated audience.[6] Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation regained operational control in 2003, prompting a revival of the Smash FM identity with a continued focus on modern rock programming until 2009.[6] On September 1, 2009, the station rebranded as Club Radio 93.1, introducing an all-dance format featuring club anthems and dance hits, positioning it as Cebu's inaugural FM outlet dedicated to electronic and party-oriented music, which persisted until early 2013.[6][9] A brief reversion to Smash FM occurred from February to July 27, 2013, adopting a broader mass-appeal mix of pop, rock, Original Pilipino Music (OPM), novelty tracks, alongside news and entertainment segments.[6] Brigada Mass Media Corporation assumed management in July 2013, launching 93.1 Brigada News FM on October 1, 2013, with a news-talk emphasis integrated with OPM and classic hits, maintaining this orientation through May 2023.[6][9] In June 2023, Brigada relocated primary operations to 90.7 FM, reducing DYWF to a repeater role until Philippine Collective Media Corporation acquired the frequency and relaunched it in January 2024 as FM Radio 93.1 Cebu, returning to a music-centric format encompassing diverse genres and cultural content.[6]

Current programming schedule and content

FM Radio 93.1 Cebu maintains a contemporary music format, emphasizing a mix of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), pop tracks, and international hits in its weekly playlists.[24][25] As of October 2025, featured songs include OPM releases like "Dalangin" by Earl Agustin and international entries such as "Folded" by Kehlani.[24][25] Weekday programming includes DJ-hosted segments amid continuous music blocks. DJ Sprocket airs from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday, focusing on greetings and music requests.[26] "Good Vibes Only," hosted by DJ Langgan, runs from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM weekdays, delivering upbeat selections.[27] Saturdays feature extended morning programming with DJ Sprocket until 8:00 AM and music rundowns like "Favorite Music Rundown," which spotlights popular tracks.[26][28] The station's overall schedule prioritizes listener-requested and chart-curated content over fixed news or talk blocks, aligning with its rebranded music emphasis since 2023.[29]

Technical Information

Broadcast specifications and coverage

DYWF operates on the frequency of 93.1 MHz in the FM broadcasting band, utilizing frequency modulation in stereo.[30] The station transmits with a power output of 20 kilowatts from its facility in the Port Area of Cebu City.[30] This configuration enables 24-hour operation serving listeners within line-of-sight range.[4] The primary coverage area encompasses Metro Cebu, including Cebu City and adjacent municipalities, with signal propagation extending to surrounding regions of Cebu Province depending on terrain and atmospheric conditions.[30] As a Class A FM station under Philippine regulations, DYWF's 20 kW effective radiated power supports reliable reception across urban and suburban zones in the region, though FM signals are generally limited to approximately 50-70 kilometers radius in flat terrain.[31] Reception quality may vary in hilly areas due to shadowing effects inherent to VHF propagation.

Studio and transmitter details

The studios of DYWF are located on the second floor of JSU-PSU Mariners' Court Cebu at the ALU-VIMCONTU Welfare Center, Legazpi Extension, Barangay San Roque, Cebu City.[32] This facility has served as the operational base since the station's early operations under Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation, accommodating production, broadcasting, and administrative functions for both its prior Brigada News FM branding and current FM Radio 93.1 format.[33] The transmitter site is positioned in Barangay Babag 1, Cebu City, atop Mount Busay, a elevated location shared by multiple regional broadcasters to optimize signal propagation across Metro Cebu and surrounding areas.[34] This placement enables effective coverage of the urban core and adjacent provinces, with the effective radiated power supporting 24-hour operations.[30]
