Musical career
[edit]2010–2014: Career beginnings and V.I.C.E.S.
[edit]Dash began rapping around the age of 16 and subsequently uploaded music on MySpace. Dash first gained major recognition in August 2012, when he appeared on three tracks from East Coast hip hop ASAP Mob's debut mixtape, Lord$ Never Worry. Also in 2012, Dash formed the hip hop duo The Heirs (or The H'z for short), which stands for High Everyday Ignoring Rules, with fellow New Jersey–based rapper RetcH. [citation needed] In 2013, Dash released his sixth solo mixtape V.I.C.E.S. (which stands for Very Ignorant Content Exposing Success), to moderate success.[2][3] The mixtape features guest appearances from Action Bronson, Vince Staples, as well as ASAP Mob members ASAP Nast and ASAP Ferg, among others. The production was handled by Larry Fisherman, Randomblackdude, Thelonious Martin and more. Dash followed up with the release of a two-track extended play (EP) titled, That Time We Smoked Dust (2014), in collaboration with RetcH.[4] In 2014, in an interview with New York music magazine The Fader, former Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt said that Dash was staying at his apartment in Los Angeles, and that they were working on music together.[5] Earl had previously produced the track "Whalé" from V.I.C.E.S, as well as appearing with him on Mac Miller's track, "New Faces v2".[6]
Since 2015: Skrewface and 17 More Minutes
[edit]In 2015, Da$h released an EP titled Skrewface, followed by a mixtape titled 17 More Minutes. Music videos were released on Da$h's YouTube page for the tracks "RicHie K II," "Hello," and "Seymour," along with a short video series, "DEADMANWALKIN," a documentary-style installation following his experiences on the "Live Now x Die Later" concert tour. In 2017, Da$h released his debut album Loose Skrew, which was released under his independent label H'z Global. He would later go on to release two more albums under H'z Global; 5 Deadly Venoms in 2019 with rapper V Don, and Walk The Plank in 2020.[citation needed]

Family and upbringing
Darien Corey Dash, Jr., professionally known as DaH's early life was marked by modest circumstances far removed from the glamour of the music business.[5] Da$H was raised by a single mother in New Jersey, alongside his two siblings.[6] His mother's sister, who was also raising three children, shared the household, resulting in six children living in a two-bedroom apartment.[6] He has described this crowded living situation as a formative part of his childhood, stating, “I grew up with a single mother who was raising 3 kids, with her sister raising 3 kids and we living 6 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment.”[6] This environment instilled a sense of resilience and independence, though his uncle's influence on his path into music came later in life rather than during his formative years.[7]Entry into music
Da$h began pursuing music in his mid-teens, starting to rap around the age of 16 while living in Hackensack, New Jersey. Initially, he and his friends recorded tracks casually, uploading freestyles and original songs to MySpace as a form of recreation rather than a professional ambition.[8] This early experimentation was influenced by the gritty street rap of New York artists like Stack Bundles, Dipset, and Max B, which resonated with his surroundings and shaped his raw, unfiltered style.[6] Encouragement from his uncle, Damon Dash—the co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records—played a pivotal role in transitioning DaH released his debut mixtape, The Script to My Instrumental, a self-produced project with beats sourced from his team that showcased his early affinity for introspective lyrics about street life and personal struggles.[6] DaAP Mob collective, appearing on their debut mixtape Lords Never Worry. This high-profile feature, alongside artists like AAP Twelvyy, exposed him to a broader audience and solidified his presence in the underground hip-hop scene. The collaboration highlighted his versatile flow and dark, narrative-driven content, marking the beginning of his rise within New York's rap ecosystem.[9][10]Musical career
2010–2014: Career beginnings and V.I.C.E.S.
Da$H began his rapping career in the late 2000s, initially uploading tracks to MySpace while still in high school in Hackensack, New Jersey. Born in 1992 as the nephew of entrepreneur Damon Dash, he drew early inspiration from the hip-hop scene but initially aspired to play professional basketball before fully committing to music after graduating. By 2011, he had released his fourth mixtape, Caveman Files, a self-produced project that showcased his raw, introspective style over gritty beats, helping to build a modest underground following in the Northeast hip-hop circuit.[6][11] In 2012, DaAP Mob collective and his involvement with the Heir Global (also known as H'z or Heir Gang) crew alongside collaborator Retch. He made his first high-profile appearances on three tracks from A Never Worry*, released on August 28, including "Jay Reed" with AH and Retch dropped their collaborative mixtape La Cienega, entirely produced by Mordecai Beats and featuring guest spots from Vince Staples and Shorty K; the project highlighted their chemistry with dark, trap-influenced soundscapes and themes of street life and ambition, earning praise for its cohesive production.[12][13][14] The period culminated in 2013 with the release of DaH's breakthrough mixtape *V.I.C.E.S.* (Very Ignorant Content Exposing Success) on June 30 via H'z Global, marking his sixth or seventh project overall and solidifying his reputation in underground hip-hop. The 17-track effort featured high-profile guests such as [Action Bronson](/page/Action_Bronson), [Ab-Soul](/page/Ab-Soul), Joey Bada$$, AAP Twelvyy, and Flatbush Zombies, with production from V Don, P on the Boards, and Larry Fisherman (Mac Miller's alias), blending boom-bap foundations with hazy, cinematic elements. Critics lauded its unfiltered lyricism on vice, success, and urban struggle, with outlets like Vice noting its evocative nod to New York rap forebears like Mobb Deep, contributing to moderate commercial buzz and Da$H's growing cult status.[15][16][5]2015–2019: Skrewface, Loose Skrew, and breakthrough projects
In 2015, DaH's raw, introspective lyricism.[17] Later that year, on September 12, he surprise-dropped the mixtape 17 More Minutes, a 12-track effort completed during a creative stint in Los Angeles. The title playfully referenced the medical myth that each cigarette shortens life by 11 minutes, infusing the album with hazy, drug-influenced themes and spaced-out production that highlighted Da$H's monotone delivery and streetwise narratives.[18][19] Following a period of building anticipation, DaH's signature blend of hardcore hip-hop and cloud rap elements.[20] Issued independently, Loose Skrew solidified his presence in the East Coast underground circuit, with tracks like "Abundance" and "As If You Ain't Know" demonstrating his ability to craft menacing, replayable beats over personal reflections on ambition and adversity.[20] Building on this momentum, DaH's venomous bars with V Don's brooding, sample-heavy beats across five tracks, including the standout "Fangs" featuring Meechy Darko. This partnership represented a breakthrough in his discography, earning praise for its atmospheric cohesion and positioning Da$H as a key player in New Jersey's evolving rap landscape.[21]2020–present: Independent releases and recent developments
In 2020, Da$h continued his independent trajectory with the release of the album Walk the Plank on March 17, a 10-track collaborative project entirely produced by Budd Dwyer, which garnered attention for its gritty, lo-fi aesthetic. Later that year on November 27, under his label H'z Global, he released the album Beta, featuring production from collaborators like Plu2o Nash and tracks exploring themes of introspection and street life, peaking at modest streaming numbers on platforms like Spotify. The following year, 2021, saw Dah's shift toward producer-driven projects, allowing creative freedom outside mainstream constraints. In 2022, Dah's versatile flow over Sonnyjim's sample-heavy production, achieving a 73 user score on Album of the Year and solidifying his international appeal in underground scenes. These independent ventures emphasized Da$h's commitment to artistic control, with physical vinyl editions distributed via Bandcamp to a dedicated fanbase. By 2023, Dah's grassroots approach, focusing on digital and limited physical distribution. Entering 2024, Dah's recent output for its cohesive production. Throughout the year, he issued standalone singles such as "1-800-Ms Cleo," "Pure Leaf," and "Seen Different," all self-released under H'z Global, maintaining momentum in streaming platforms.[22] As of 2025, Da$h has continued independent activity with the single "Hurt So Bad" with Psylo, released on February 19 and distributed via platforms like Apple Music without major label backing. These releases reflect ongoing developments in his career, prioritizing collaborations with emerging producers and a focus on vinyl-centric distribution to cult audiences, while avoiding mainstream commercial pushes.[23]Artistry
Musical style and themes
Da$H's musical style is rooted in hardcore hip hop, cloud rap, and trap, characterized by ominous and atmospheric production that creates a dark, immersive soundscape. His delivery is aggressive and biting, often delivered in a raspy, intense voice that conveys raw emotion and street-hardened grit. Early mixtapes like V.I.C.E.S. (2013) lean into boom-bap beats with influences from New York rap pioneers such as Mobb Deep and MF Doom, blending nostalgic East Coast elements with the hazy, internet-driven aesthetics of cloud rap.[10][24] Later projects, including the album Loose Skrew (2017), evolve this foundation with wavy, low-key instrumentals and a more experimental edge, drawing comparisons to the brooding introspection of Earl Sweatshirt's I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside. Da$H frequently employs rapid flows and layered vocal effects to heighten tension, as heard in tracks like "Decisions" from 2017, where he navigates fast-paced rhythms with precision. His sound has also been likened to the hard-edged styles of Schoolboy Q and Vince Staples, emphasizing a balance of menace and melody.[24][25] Thematically, Da$H's work delves into the vices and contradictions of success, exploring personal struggles, street life, drug culture, relationships, and the pursuit of wealth. The title V.I.C.E.S.—standing for "Very Ignorant Content Exposing Success"—encapsulates this focus, portraying a nuanced journey through the temptations and pitfalls of ambition in a gritty urban context. His lyrics often provide vivid depictions of New Jersey and New York hustles, blending social commentary on systemic pressures with unfiltered reflections on indulgence and resilience, as seen across releases like Skrewface (2015) and subsequent EPs.[10][25]Influences and affiliations
Da$h's musical style draws significant influence from East Coast hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, evident in his adoption of their signature dark, bass-heavy production and raw, adolescent lyricism on tracks like "Infamous."[5] This inspiration manifests in his delivery, which echoes the gritty, confrontational tone of 1990s New York rap.[5] As the nephew of Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, Da$h maintains familial connections to hip-hop's entrepreneurial legacy, though he has carved an independent path.[5] He is a loose affiliate of the AAP Ant.[26] DaH of snitching, lacking street credibility, and drug addiction.[27][28] His affiliations extend to key collaborations with Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt on the 2015 track "Off Top" from I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside, as well as producers like Metro Boomin, including on the track "Mudd Walk" from Skrewface (2015).[29][30]Discography

His mixtapes gained traction in the early 2010s for their gritty lyricism and atmospheric beats, helping establish him as a key figure in New Jersey's rap underground.[9] One of his earliest notable mixtapes, La Cienega (2012), was a collaborative effort with fellow rapper RetcH under their Heirs collective, entirely produced by Mordecai Beats and featuring Vince Staples on the title track; the eight-track project highlighted their chemistry and laid the groundwork for Da$H's signature hazy, narcotic sound.[13][57] The 2013 mixtape V.I.C.E.S.
