Dodi Fayed was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to Mohamed Al-Fayed and Samira Khashoggi. His mother was a Saudi author and sister of Saudi billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.

Dodi's parents, Mohamed Al-Fayed and Samira Khashoggi, divorced when Dodi was just one year old. His father received full custody, but Dodi was often left with servants as Mohamed built his business empire.

At the age of 19, Dodi enrolled in a six-month course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain. This prestigious institution was also attended by Prince William and Prince Harry.

Dodi founded Allied Stars Ltd., a movie production company supported by his wealthy father. The company produced several notable films, including "Breaking Glass" (1980) and "Chariots of Fire" (1981).

The film "Chariots of Fire", produced by Allied Stars Ltd., won four Oscars, including the Academy Award for Best Picture. This success spurred Dodi to relocate his company to Los Angeles.

Dodi married Suzanne Gregard, but the marriage was short-lived and ended in divorce in 1987.

Dodi was an executive producer for Steven Spielberg’s "Hook", starring Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Julia Roberts. He received this credit due to his involvement in selling part of the movie rights to Peter Pan.

Dodi had a short but highly publicized relationship with Princess Diana. The couple's romance was cut short by a tragic car accident in Paris.
