Early life
Emily Fairn was born on 16 September 1998 in Liverpool, Merseyside, England.[1] She was raised in the working-class suburb of Stockbridge Village, often nicknamed "Canny Farm" by locals, where she grew up immersed in Liverpudlian culture alongside her family.[8] Her mother worked in banking, while her father imported fruit and vegetables, and she has a younger sister; Fairn has noted that she was the first in her family to pursue drama school.[9][10] As a child, Fairn was academically inclined, initially envisioning a university path in mathematics rather than the performing arts.[11] However, during her final year of secondary school, she experienced a pivotal shift, realizing her longstanding aptitude for performance could become a career, which sparked her interest in acting amid Liverpool's vibrant creative environment.[11] This realization set the stage for her subsequent formal training.Education and training
Emily Fairn, born and raised in Liverpool, relocated to London to pursue formal acting training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where her regional upbringing provided a strong foundation for developing her natural Liverpudlian accent.[12][13][14] She was admitted to the Drama Department on her first audition attempt, a notable achievement given the high competition, as most applicants require multiple years of preparation.[11] This move from her working-class Liverpool background presented financial challenges, including the high costs of auditions (£60–£100 each), which her mother supported with a one-time gift, limiting Fairn to a single opportunity without a safety net.[14][11] During her three-year program, Fairn honed a range of performance skills essential to her acting career, including a strong soprano singing voice and proficiency in various accents, building on her innate ear for dialects.[12] She also received training in physical disciplines such as ballet, show dance, period dance, tap, and stage combat, which equipped her for diverse roles across stage and screen.[12] As a Guildhall Scholar and member of the National Youth Theatre, Fairn's dedication was inspired by her mother's unwavering encouragement, which motivated her to overcome the lack of familial industry connections and the perception in Liverpool that acting was an unattainable profession.[12][14] Fairn graduated from Guildhall in 2020, with her Spotlight profile (3499-9089-8775) reflecting her readiness for professional work through these specialized trainings.[12][11]Career

Critical reception
Critics have praised Emily Fairn's portrayal of Casey in The Responder, highlighting her ability to infuse the character with authenticity and vitality. Martin Freeman, who plays Chris Carson, noted in the BBC media pack that Fairn's audition tape revealed a "real lightness and freshness" to the role, avoiding a stereotypical depiction of a drug addict by making Casey "very much alive, funny, irreverent and surprising."[27] Reviewers echoed this, with the Evening Standard describing her as delivering a "scene-stealing" performance that forms a "hilarious and heartbreaking" dynamic alongside co-star Josh Finan, capturing the raw emotional depth of Casey's struggles.[28] In series two, The Independent commended Fairn for being "excellent" in providing levity amid the show's gloom, underscoring her skill in balancing humor and hardship.[29] The Liverpool Echo further noted that she has "earned rave reviews" for her "incredible performance," emphasizing her natural embodiment of the character's Scouse resilience.[8] Fairn's stage debut as Alma in the 2023 West End production of Brokeback Mountain also garnered acclaim for its emotional nuance. The Evening Standard review highlighted her "startling assurance" as a newcomer, capturing the "real attraction, and then real bitterness" in Alma's marriage to Ennis amid the story's themes of closeted love.[30] The Guardian observed that Fairn effectively "captures the impact of closeted male homosexuality on the women caught within its doubleness," contributing to the production's atmospheric tension.[31] London Theatre praised her as making a "fantastic stage debut," portraying Alma's confusion, fear, and anger with conviction over the play's 20-year span.[32] In her supporting role as Suzie in the Black Mirror episode "Demon 79," Fairn added to the supernatural thriller's eerie atmosphere, appearing in key scenes that heighten the narrative's moral and temporal tension. While the episode received mixed overall reception for its departure from the series' tech-focused roots, Frame Rated noted the ensemble's strong contributions to the story's emotional vulnerability and complexity, with Fairn's brief but pivotal presence enhancing the 1979 setting's dread.[33] Fairn has been widely regarded as a rising star, with Screen International naming her one of the UK Stars of Tomorrow in 2023 for her breakout work in The Responder and subsequent versatility across genres.[24] By 2025, outlets like Vogue continued to spotlight her as a "rising star," citing her range in projects from gritty dramas like The Responder to period pieces such as House of Guinness, where she navigates complex matriarchal roles with strength.[9] BroadwayWorld interviews emphasized her adaptability with accents—from Scouse in The Responder to Wyoming in Brokeback Mountain—and her enthusiasm for diverse opportunities, positioning her as a multifaceted talent.[34] While some early critiques noted her newcomer status might limit depth in lead roles, positive trends highlight her growth, with consistent praise for blending humor, vulnerability, and intensity, signaling strong potential in television, film, and theatre.[24] Fairn's performance as Laraine Newman in the 2024 film Saturday Night, depicting the debut of [Saturday Night Live](/page/Saturday Night Live), drew specific praise; the real Laraine Newman called her portrayal "brilliant" in interviews, noting its authenticity amid the film's chaotic ensemble dynamic, which earned generally positive reviews for its energy and historical reimagining.[35] In the 2024 film Joy, her role as Lily contributed to the biopic's favorable reception (Metacritic score of 62/100), lauded for its heartwarming depiction of IVF pioneers. Her lead as Anne Plunket in the 2025 Netflix series House of Guinness has been highlighted for its strength, with the show earning a 7.4/10 on IMDb as of November 2025 and critics noting her resilient portrayal amid the family saga's empire-building themes.[36]Filmography
