Key Information

František Musil (born December 17, 1964), more commonly known in North America as Frank Musil, is a Czech former professional ice hockey player who spent several seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Minnesota North Stars, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, and Edmonton Oilers. Musil is currently an amateur scout for the Sabres and assistant coach for the Czech national ice hockey team.

Playing career

[edit]

Musil was selected in the second round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, 38th overall, by the Minnesota North Stars. He played on 1985 Gold Medal winning IIHF Men's World Championships for Czechoslovakia. In addition to playing in various professional European leagues, Musil played 797 games in the NHL, for Minnesota as well as the Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers.

Musil's draft position fell, but not because of talent, as there was some uncertainty whether he would be able to escape Czechoslovakia, then a Communist country. Musil obtained a holiday visa and travelled to Yugoslavia with his girlfriend. Leaving her at the resort, Musil met with Minnesota General Manager Lou Nanne and player agent Ritch Winter, who had arranged for an American work visa. Winter and Nanne used the work visa to fool the border guards, who were unaware that Musil was a defecting hockey star. Thus, in the summer of 1986, Musil arrived in Minnesota, and began his NHL career that fall.

Musil retired from hockey at the end of the 2000–01 season, and was hired by the Oilers as a scout. Musil is married to former professional tennis player Andrea Holíková, who is the sister of former NHL player Bobby Holík.

Musil's son, David, is a professional hockey player who has played in the NHL for Edmonton Oilers.[1] His son Adam was selected by St. Louis Blues as the 94th pick of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.[2] His daughter, Dana, played volleyball for the University at Buffalo Bulls.[3]

Frank Musil (Czech: František Musil) is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenseman known for his 14-season career in the National Hockey League as a physical, stay-at-home blueliner with the Minnesota North Stars, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, and Edmonton Oilers. He established himself as a reliable defensive presence, particularly during his tenure with the Calgary Flames, where his rugged, physical style was prominent. Born on December 17, 1964, in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia, Musil was drafted in the second round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. Standing at 6'3" and weighing around 215 pounds, he played a heavy-hitting role on the blue line and was known for his physicality throughout his career. Musil also represented Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic internationally, competing in events such as the World Championships and Canada Cup. After retiring from the NHL in 2001, he made a brief appearance in the Czech second division before fully stepping away from professional play. He remains connected to hockey through his sons Adam Musil and David Musil, who also pursued professional careers in the sport.

Early life

Youth in Czechoslovakia

Frank Musil was born on December 17, 1964, in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia (now in the Czech Republic). He began his hockey development in the youth program of HC Pardubice, where he honed his skills as a defenseman in the local system. Musil transitioned to senior competition with TJ Tesla Pardubice in the Czechoslovak First Ice Hockey League, making his debut during the 1980-81 season at age 16 and continuing with the club through the 1983-84 season. While still playing in Czechoslovakia, he was selected by the Minnesota North Stars in the second round, 38th overall, of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. In 1984, Musil moved to ASD Dukla Jihlava, playing there for the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons in the same league before his departure from Czechoslovakia.

Defection to North America

Frantisek Musil, drafted 38th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft while still playing in Czechoslovakia, defected to North America in July 1986 after years of planning for a legal exit from the Communist regime. In spring 1986 he refused to sign a required commitment not to defect, resulting in his removal from the national team, and he completed his military obligations in June 1986 to qualify for a holiday visa to Yugoslavia. While vacationing in Yugoslavia with his girlfriend Andrea Holikova, Musil left her at their hotel without prior notice on July 15, 1986, and joined Minnesota North Stars general manager Lou Nanne and Edmonton-based agent Rich Winter, who had coordinated the effort. The group traveled by car for two days seeking a viable exit route from Yugoslavia before Musil crossed the border using a temporary U.S. work visa arranged by Nanne, which border guards accepted without recognizing him as a hockey player. They then flew to London and onward to New York on the Concorde, with Musil arriving in Minnesota on July 18, 1986. Musil was not officially classified as a defector by the U.S. government, having entered on a work permit rather than seeking political asylum. In November 1986, after competing in a tennis tournament in Puerto Rico, Holikova returned to Minnesota instead of Czechoslovakia and requested political asylum, a process expedited through Nanne's political connections. She subsequently joined Musil in the United States.

Playing career

Czechoslovak league career

Frank Musil played in the Czechoslovak First Ice Hockey League during the early to mid-1980s. In the 1981–82 season with Pardubice HC, he appeared in 35 games as a defenseman, recording 1 goal, 3 assists, 4 points, and 34 penalty minutes. During his mandatory military service, he played for ASD Dukla Jihlava, the first-division army club, under coach Jaroslav Holík, appearing in 34 games in the 1985–86 season with 4 goals, 7 assists, 11 points, and 0 penalty minutes. As a highly regarded defensive talent in the league, Musil was selected by the Minnesota North Stars in the second round (38th overall) of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.

NHL career

Frank Musil played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1986-87 to 2000-01, appearing in 797 regular-season games and compiling 34 goals, 106 assists, and 140 points to go along with a +93 plus-minus rating and 1,241 penalty minutes. A physical stay-at-home defenseman known for his size and toughness, he relied primarily on defensive reliability and physical play rather than offensive production. Musil began his NHL tenure with the Minnesota North Stars, playing 271 games across parts of five seasons from 1986-87 to 1990-91. He was traded to the Calgary Flames during the 1990-91 campaign and spent five seasons there through 1994-95, totaling 335 games and enjoying some of his strongest defensive showings, including a +38 plus-minus rating in 1993-94 and +28 in 1992-93. He later played 122 games over two seasons with the Ottawa Senators from 1995-96 to 1996-97 and finished his NHL career with 69 games across four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers from 1997-98 to 2000-01. Early in his career, Musil frequently led in penalty minutes among defensemen, most notably accumulating 213 PIM in 1987-88 with Minnesota. In the playoffs, he appeared in 42 games across eight postseasons, recording 2 goals, 4 assists, 6 points, and 47 penalty minutes. Musil did not win a Stanley Cup during his NHL career.

Later professional play

Following his 15-season NHL career that concluded with the Edmonton Oilers in 2000-01, Frank Musil returned to the Czech Republic for a brief final professional stint. In the 2001-02 season, he played three games with HC Dukla Jihlava in the Czech 1. Liga (second division), recording one assist and accumulating 54 penalty minutes. This marked the end of his playing career, as he retired from professional hockey following that limited appearance.
