Harvey Robinson is an American serial killer known for raping and murdering three women in Allentown, Pennsylvania, during 1992 and 1993 while he was a teenager. He committed his crimes against Joan Burghardt, Charlotte Schmoyer, and Jessica Jean Fortney, and also sexually assaulted and attempted to kill two other victims who survived. Convicted in 1994 of three counts of first-degree murder and related offenses, he received death sentences for all three killings, at the time making him one of the youngest serial killers sentenced to death in the United States. Born on December 6, 1974, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Robinson grew up in a troubled household marked by an abusive father with a history of violence. He exhibited behavioral problems from a young age, including juvenile arrests for offenses such as burglary. His crimes began in August 1992 with the murder of Joan Burghardt, followed by a series of attacks in June and July 1993 that escalated in violence and culminated in his arrest after a confrontation with police at the home of a surviving victim. DNA evidence linked him to the attacks, and he was apprehended in July 1993 after seeking medical treatment for injuries sustained during the final incident. Following his trial, his death sentences for two of the murders were later modified due to legal issues, including the application of aggravating factors and his age at the time of certain crimes. In 2019, he agreed to a sentence of 35 years to life for the murder of Joan Burghardt and life imprisonment for the murder of Charlotte Schmoyer. He remains on death row for the murder of Jessica Jean Fortney, with ongoing appeals, including a certiorari petition filed with the U.S. Supreme Court in 2024. His case has drawn attention for its implications regarding juvenile offenders and the death penalty. Harvey Miguel Robinson was born on December 6, 1974, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He grew up in an abusive household with an alcoholic father who physically and emotionally abused his mother, who eventually left the family. His father had previously been incarcerated for beating his mistress, Marlene E. Perez, to death in 1962, with the victim described as nearly unrecognizable due to the severity of the beating. Robinson exhibited severe behavioral problems from a young age. He was first arrested at the age of nine and continued to have juvenile arrests throughout his youth for offenses including burglary and terroristic threats. In school, he displayed traits of severe conduct disorder, including threats, outbursts, and assaulting a teacher. No professional career is documented for Harvey Robinson beyond his criminal activities and incarceration since 1993.
