Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was born in Hamburg, then a sovereign state of the German Confederation. He was born into a prosperous and cultured Hanseatic family. His father was Gustav Ferdinand Hertz and his mother was Anna Elisabeth Pfefferkorn.
