i24NEWS is a 24-hour news television channel created by journalists and reporters from Israel.[1] It broadcasts in languages such as French, English, Hebrew, and Arabic. The channel was founded by Patrick Drahi, with Frank Melloul serving as its first CEO. In 2025, Ronit Ganon-Amit was appointed CEO of i24NEWS, while Frank Melloul was promoted to Chairman.[2] The company is based in Tel Aviv, but the broadcast network reports news from all over the world.[3]

Key Information

In early 2017, the channel paired up with the US to expand their channel. By 2018, the company had studios in Tel Aviv, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. It still deploys correspondents in other locations around the world.[4] In September 2021, following the Abraham Accords, the channel received a broadcasting license from the United Arab Emirates and opened its Gulf bureau in Dubai Media City.[5][6][7] In May 2022, the channel launched its operations in Morocco with two new bureaus in Rabat and Casablanca.[8]

In June 2024, i24NEWS launched a Hebrew language channel, the fourth channel of the network. This version is not available on conventional cable and satellite providers in Israel.[9]

History

[edit]

The channel went live on 17 July 2013. Melloul stated that it would battle prejudice and ignorance about Israel with "facts and diversity".[10][11]

Arab Israeli journalist Lucy Aharish was the lead anchor of the English-language branch of the channel from July 2013 until she left in January 2016.

On 8 December 2016, all programming on the English channel officially ended in preparation for launching in America. The channel broadcast 10 minutes of news on the hour from 0800 to 2300 (local time), replacing "Morning Edition", "The Daily Beat" and "The Lineup".

The launch of i24NEWS in the United States was announced on 27 January 2017. The channel is operated out of its headquarters in Jaffa.

Live programming in the US is broadcast from Times Square in New York, New York, as well as from an additional bureau in Washington, D.C. Approximately 50 journalists were hired to staff the two locations, and the channel uses resources from its Jaffa headquarters.

Among the first journalists hired were Michelle Makori, anchor and editor-in-chief; David Shuster, managing editor; and Dan Raviv, a veteran of CBS News. The channel acquired many of its debut behind-the-scenes talent from the former Al Jazeera America.[12][13]

In 2020, following the Abraham Accords, i24NEWS signed a variety of memorandum of understanding[14] and partnership agreements with leading companies in the UAE. i24NEWS became the first Israel-based channel to be broadcast in the UAE. In 2021, the channel received a UAE broadcast license and launched its studios[15] in Dubai Media City, the regional hub for media organizations in the Gulf.

In 2022, i24NEWS launched its operations in Morocco[16] and opened bureaus in Rabat and Casablanca.[17]

On 29 October 2023, the i24 launched i24 Freedom, a 24-hour international channel devoted to the ongoing Israel–Hamas War. The channel won an International Emmy Award for foreign news reporting during the war.[18]

On 30 June 2024, i24NEWS launched a Hebrew language channel.[19][20] The feed received criticism for countering Miri Michaeli's launch speech that the channel was not a one-sided outlet, while Maariv journalist Miki Levin called it "Channel 14 in a suit" days before it launched.[9]

Headquartered in and operating without direct government funding, it expanded to a Hebrew-language service in June 2024, positioning itself as Israel's first dedicated 24/7 news channel amid a landscape dominated by public broadcasters. The channel emphasizes independence and regional focus, including broadcasts aimed at Arab viewers, but has drawn criticism for perceived right-center bias, particularly in promoting narratives aligned with Israeli government positions on conflicts such as with .

Founding and Early Development

Origins and Launch (2013)

![i24NEWS headquarters in Jaffa, Tel Aviv][float-right] i24NEWS was founded in 2013 by , a French- and founder of the Altice telecommunications group, with the aim of creating an international news channel based in to broadcast news from an Israeli perspective to global audiences. The channel was established as Israel's first 24-hour news network, focusing on multilingual programming in English, French, and to reach international viewers, in contrast to state broadcaster Kan 11's limited news hours. Preparations for the launch included setting up studios in the historic area of , with an initial investment supporting operations for live news coverage, analysis, and reports emphasizing Middle Eastern affairs from an Israeli viewpoint. The channel's rollout was announced earlier in 2013, targeting a summer debut to compete with outlets like Al Jazeera and by providing unfiltered Israeli narratives. i24NEWS commenced broadcasting on July 17, 2013, marking the debut of continuous 24/7 news from aimed at countering perceived biases in international media coverage of the region. At launch, the network featured correspondents in multiple languages and focused on real-time reporting, with initial distribution via satellite and online platforms to audiences in , the , and beyond.

Initial Multilingual Expansion

i24NEWS initiated its operations on July 17, 2013, as Israel's first international 24-hour news channel, broadcasting simultaneously in French, English, and to target global audiences beyond domestic Hebrew speakers. This multilingual strategy differentiated it from traditional Israeli media, which primarily served local viewers, by emphasizing coverage of , the , and related international events from a Jaffa, studio headquarters. The channel's founders positioned it as a counter to perceived biases in outlets like Al Jazeera and Western networks, aiming for 350 million potential viewers through satellite, cable, and online distribution. The French-language service, reflecting founder Patrick Drahi's European ties via Altice, launched as the flagship, with programming adapted for francophone audiences in , , and . English broadcasts followed concurrently, focusing on Anglo audiences in the U.S., , and elsewhere, while the channel targeted Middle Eastern and diaspora viewers, including in the Gulf and , to provide an Israeli perspective amid regional tensions. Initial restrictions prevented domestic Israeli carriage on cable or , reinforcing the outward-facing multilingual model until regulatory changes in 2018. By late 2013, the channels had established bureaus in and New York, enhancing on-the-ground reporting for multilingual feeds. This foundational expansion into three languages enabled i24NEWS to claim a niche in competitive markets, with early viewership estimates reaching tens of millions via partnerships like those with French IPTV providers and U.S. distributors. The approach prioritized real-time, unfiltered Israel-centric , though critics noted potential challenges in maintaining under private ownership.

Initial programming includes flagship news bulletins and analysis segments, distributed via online platforms, , mobile apps, and select cable providers such as channel 15 on certain Israeli systems. Despite ambitions to capture viewers seeking non-traditional news formats, early ratings for key programs have remained low, typically ranging from fractions of a to occasional peaks of 2 percent, reflecting challenges in penetrating a saturated market dominated by legacy evening broadcasts.

Editorial Approach and Political Positioning

Stated Mission and Objectives

i24NEWS was founded in 2013 by French-Israeli businessman Patrick Drahi with the primary objective of broadcasting news from an Israeli perspective to international audiences, emphasizing coverage of Israel and the Middle East alongside global events. The channel positions itself as providing a "broad and diverse Israeli perspective" on regional and international news, aiming to fill a perceived gap in global media by offering on-the-ground reporting from what its executives describe as the region's only democracy. Channel leadership has stated that its core mission is to "tell the truth about the " through multilingual programming in English, French, , and Hebrew, fostering greater understanding of events originating from and its environs. This includes a commitment to independent, competitive, and balanced reporting without serving any explicit political agenda, as articulated during expansions such as the 2018 launch of domestic Israeli and the 2024 introduction of a 24/7 Hebrew-language service intended to compete as the nation's first continuous news outlet. Objectives extend to technological and distributional goals, such as leveraging digital platforms for 24-hour to reach over a billion potential viewers worldwide, while maintaining studios in Tel Aviv's area for real-time coverage. Executives have highlighted the aim to present multifaceted narratives of the in multiple languages simultaneously, prioritizing empirical reporting over to distinguish the channel from state-affiliated or ideologically driven outlets.

Perceived Biases and Viewpoints

i24NEWS is frequently rated as having a right-center , primarily due to its favorable portrayal of Israeli policies on matters and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including a negative depiction of groups like . This perspective aligns with broader pro-Israel viewpoints, emphasizing defensive actions and downplaying or contextualizing criticisms of military operations. evaluators note that while the channel produces original reporting with relatively neutral language on non-Middle East topics, its coverage of the 2023 Israel-Hamas war included promotion of unverified claims, such as reports of decapitated infants, which contributed to a mixed factual reliability assessment. The launch of its Hebrew-language service in June 2024 intensified debates over its positioning, with some observers describing it as moderately right-wing and targeted at audiences perceiving mainstream Israeli media as insufficiently supportive of stances. Critics, particularly from left-leaning outlets like , have accused it of functioning as a supporter of Prime Minister , pointing to limited investigative resources, aggressive on-air rhetoric toward opponents, and restrained coverage of Gaza's civilian toll compared to international standards. Such assessments from , which maintains a dovish line often critical of right-wing governments, reflect ideological divergences within Israel's polarized media landscape rather than uniform consensus. Channel representatives assert an apolitical mission focused on truth and viewer interests, positioning i24NEWS as a 24/7 alternative that avoids the of more extreme right-leaning competitors like Channel 14 while filling gaps in weekend coverage. Some contributors, including activists appearing on its programs, report no discernible bias in specific segments, suggesting variability across formats. Overall, its viewpoints prioritize Israeli national interests and empirical security data over narratives emphasizing humanitarian critiques prevalent in global or left-leaning media.

Controversies and Criticisms

Accusations of Government Alignment

Critics have accused i24NEWS of aligning closely with the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly in its coverage of security issues and political developments. A 2019 Haaretz investigation claimed that i24NEWS shifted toward pro-Netanyahu stances to secure a broadcasting license in Israel, including efforts to launch English and Hebrew channels amid regulatory pressures from authorities favoring the ruling Likud party. Such allegations, often voiced by left-leaning Israeli media outlets like Haaretz that have historically opposed Netanyahu's policies, suggest the channel promotes right-leaning government narratives, especially regarding conflicts with Hamas. Media bias evaluators have rated i24NEWS as right-center biased with a pro-government tilt, citing its tendency to amplify official positions on while downplaying internal dissent. For instance, following the 2024 launch of its Hebrew channel, questioned whether it functioned as a "Netanyahu mouthpiece," pointing to editorial choices that echoed government talking points on judicial reforms and Gaza operations, despite staff assertions of . These claims persist amid broader critiques of Israeli media polarization, where outlets perceived as insufficiently adversarial to the government face scrutiny from opposition-aligned sources. i24NEWS has not publicly conceded to such alignments, maintaining its mission as a balanced international broadcaster.

Reporting Disputes and Fact-Checking Issues

i24NEWS has been rated as having mixed factual reporting by Media Bias/Fact Check, citing failed fact checks and promotion of unproven claims, particularly in coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict. A prominent example occurred on October 10, 2023, when i24NEWS correspondent Nicole Zedeck reported from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, stating that Israeli soldiers, including a commander, claimed to have seen babies' heads cut off and believed 40 babies and children had been killed by Hamas militants during the October 7 attacks. The report, based on unverified eyewitness accounts from soldiers amid the chaotic aftermath, was amplified across social media and international outlets but lacked immediate corroboration from forensic evidence or official Israeli military confirmation. Subsequent investigations by fact-checking organizations, including PolitiFact, classified the specific claim of mass beheadings as unproven, noting that while Hamas killed at least 38 minors in Kfar Aza—including infants—evidence of decapitation was not substantiated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) or autopsies. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, distanced themselves from the beheading details, emphasizing verified atrocities such as shootings and burnings without endorsing the decapitation narrative. Critics, including outlets like Al Jazeera and , accused i24NEWS of originating and disseminating "" that fueled inflammatory rhetoric, though defenders contextualized it as an initial report from a war zone where committed documented massacres of civilians, including children. The incident contributed to broader disputes over i24NEWS's sourcing practices, with highlighting it as emblematic of unsubstantiated assertions that undermined credibility, despite the channel's overall reliance on on-the-ground reporting from . No major retractions were issued by i24NEWS, which maintained the report reflected soldiers' contemporaneous beliefs rather than confirmed facts. Other fact-checking concerns have been less prominently documented, but i24NEWS has faced scrutiny for pro-Israel framing that occasionally prioritizes unverified military or government-aligned narratives over independent verification, as noted in analyses of its wartime coverage. For instance, claims of Israeli airstrikes misattributed to unrelated footage have been flagged in bias evaluations, though specific instances remain sparse compared to the October 2023 controversy. These issues have led to perceptions of selective fact-checking rigor, particularly when reporting aligns with Israeli perspectives amid accusations of bias from Palestinian and international critics.

Responses to Bias Claims

i24NEWS has rebutted accusations of by highlighting its editorial practices and platform diversity. In November 2019, following a alleging the channel adjusted coverage to curry favor with Prime Minister ahead of elections, i24NEWS responded that the incident provided "the best evidence that i24News is a balanced media outlet that provides an equal and fair platform to all ends of Israeli politics." Founder and Chairman Frank Melloul has defended the channel's approach by stressing balanced storytelling amid conflicts, stating in a July 2025 interview that i24NEWS aims to reshape global dialogue through multifaceted perspectives rather than one-sided narratives, countering prevalent in international coverage. Similarly, in a 2019 discussion, Melloul affirmed the outlet's agenda as "to be balanced, to show the different points of view," particularly during Israeli elections. The channel maintains it operates independently, without direct funding, to preserve neutrality while offering an Israeli viewpoint internationally—explicitly rejecting claims of state alignment, as Melloul noted in 2013 that funding comes from private sources like telecommunications magnate . For its Hebrew-language service launched in 2024, i24NEWS spokespersons have touted it as Israel's first 24/7 news provider delivering current events without slant, with on-air contributors like human rights activist Yariv Oppenheimer observing no discernible bias in programs such as panel discussions. Critics' bias allegations, often from outlets rated as left-leaning or mixed in factual reliability like and , contrast with i24NEWS's self-description as a "democratic, measured operation" by its staff, emphasizing recruitment of veteran journalists across the spectrum to foster internal pluralism. The channel has not issued formal rebuttals to broader ratings of right-center but implicitly counters them through consistent airing of opposition voices and fact-based rebuttals to anti-Israel narratives in global media.

Reception, Impact, and Achievements

Audience Metrics and Ratings

i24NEWS's Hebrew-language channel, launched in 2024, has recorded modest television viewership ratings in Israel. Data from the Israeli Audience Research Board indicate that the evening program hosted by journalist Raviv Drucker achieved an average rating of 2.5% among the target demographic, reflecting limited penetration compared to established competitors like Channels 12 and 13. Overall, the channel's ratings remain low, contributing to its challenges in establishing a significant domestic audience share despite recruitment of veteran on-air talent. On digital platforms, i24NEWS maintains a niche international presence. The i24news.tv website ranks 16,917th globally and 79th in the news and media publishers category as of September 2025, with audience demographics skewed toward males (65.83%) and the 55-64 age group. The English-language YouTube channel, a key outlet for global viewers, has amassed approximately 645,000 subscribers, though individual video viewership varies, with recent streams garnering tens of thousands of views. Mobile apps for i24NEWS channels show engagement in the low thousands of reviews, with Google Play ratings at 3.6 out of 5 from 4,492 users. These metrics underscore i24NEWS's focus on targeted international and audiences rather than mass-market dominance, with growth primarily in digital and multilingual streaming over traditional linear TV in core markets. No comprehensive Nielsen data for U.S. or global cable carriage is publicly available, consistent with its positioning as a specialized provider amid larger networks.

Influence on International Discourse

i24NEWS exerts influence on international discourse primarily by offering on-the-ground reporting from and the in English, French, and , targeting audiences beyond Israel's borders to present perspectives often underrepresented in Western and Arab media. Launched in 2013 with a focus on 70% international coverage, the channel aims to provide real-time insights into Israel-neighbor relations and regional conflicts, positioning itself as an "Israeli answer to Al Jazeera" to counter narratives from state-funded outlets like Qatar's Al Jazeera. This approach has contributed to shaping discussions on topics such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran-Qatar influence operations, where i24NEWS highlights campaigns by adversarial actors. The channel's expansion into the in 2017, via partnerships like , has extended its reach to approximately 4.9 million video customers in key markets including New York and , enabling it to influence American viewers with direct access to Israeli officials and events. Digital metrics indicate a niche but growing presence, with i24news.tv ranking 16,917 globally and 79th in publishers as of September 2025, supporting its role in disseminating alternative viewpoints amid broader media biases favoring adversarial framing of . This has fostered diplomatic and cultural bridging, particularly during escalations like the post-October 7, 2023, Gaza events, where its coverage informs communities and policymakers seeking unfiltered regional analysis. However, i24NEWS's impact remains constrained by its modest audience scale relative to giants like or , limiting systemic shifts in global opinion but carving a space for pro-Israel in dominated by outlets with documented left-leaning or state-influenced biases. Its right-center orientation, emphasizing empirical reporting from studios, has drawn citations in international analyses of media influence operations, underscoring its utility in challenging hegemonic narratives on foreign policy.

Comparative Analysis with Peers

i24NEWS differentiates itself from domestic Israeli peers such as , Keshet 12, and Reshet 13 by providing continuous 24-hour news programming across multiple languages, including English, French, , and Hebrew since July 2024, whereas these competitors primarily integrate news bulletins within mixed schedules of , drama, and current affairs shows. This format positions i24NEWS as Israel's inaugural dedicated 24/7 news channel in Hebrew, targeting both local viewers seeking uninterrupted coverage and international audiences with an Israel-centric global perspective, in contrast to 's emphasis on public-service investigative reporting and the commercial focus of Channels 12 and 13 on high-rating prime-time content. In editorial stance, i24NEWS has been characterized as center-right, aspiring to neutrality without overt political allegiance, though critics from left-leaning outlets like have alleged pro-Netanyahu leanings in its Hebrew iteration, distinguishing it from the more liberal-leaning Reshet 13 and the populist-centrist Keshet 12, both of which faced accusations of insufficient scrutiny toward government narratives during conflicts. Unlike Channel 14, an ultranationalist outlet that achieved top ratings with 343,000 viewers in October 2024 by surpassing Channel 12 through unapologetically pro-government commentary, i24NEWS adopts a less confrontational tone, potentially appealing to viewers disillusioned with Channel 14's intensity but wary of the perceived establishment biases in and commercial networks. Audience metrics underscore i24NEWS's nascent domestic challenge: its Hebrew channel garnered modest engagement with 35,000 followers and 50,000 subscribers by August 2025, paling against the entrenched viewership of Channels 12 and 13, which dominate commercial ratings, and Channel 14's recent surge amid polarized discourse. Internationally, i24NEWS competes with outlets like Al Jazeera by offering an Israeli counter-narrative on events, dedicating about 30% of airtime to domestic news versus 70% global, though it lacks Al Jazeera's state-backed resources and reach in Arab markets. This hybrid model fosters broader discourse influence abroad compared to purely domestic peers, yet its Hebrew expansion risks viewer cannibalization from Channels 12 and 13, as analysts predict, without yet disrupting Kan 11's public mandate or Channel 14's niche loyalty.
