Leading sire in North America (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025)

Into Mischief (foaled March 28, 2005) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire. During his racing career, he won three of six starts including the CashCall Futurity. Since his retirement, he has developed into an outstanding sire, leading the North American sire list in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. His offspring include Authentic (2020 American Horse of the Year), Mandaloun (2021 Kentucky Derby), Life Is Good (Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile), Covfefe (female sprint Champion) and Sovereignty (2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes).

Background

[edit]

Into Mischief was bred in Kentucky by James T. Hines Jr.[2] He was from the first crop of Harlan's Holiday, a Grade I-winning grandson of Storm Cat.[3] Into Mischief was one of the first foals out of Leslie's Lady, a stakes-winning daughter of Tricky Creek. Leslie's Lady later produced multiple Eclipse Award winner Beholder and Grade I winner Mendelssohn, and was named the 2016 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. She comes from a distinguished female family that also produced dual Classic winner I'll Have Another.[4][5]

Into Mischief was sold as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Fall Sale for $80,000 to Gage Hill Stable. He was re-sold as a two-year-old in training at the Ocala Breeders' Sale for $180,000 to B. Wayne Hughes,[2] the owner of Spendthrift Farm. He was trained by Richard Mandella.[6]

Racing career

[edit]

2007: two-year-old season

[edit]

Into Mischief made his first start on October 21, 2007, in a 6+12-furlong maiden race at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita. He dueled for the early lead with Bazzoom, running a fast opening quarter mile of 21.87 seconds. Bazoom dropped back on the turn, eventually finishing eleventh. Into Mischief continued to open up his lead under mild urging and won by 2+12 lengths.[7] He finished second in his next start, the Hollywood Prevue Stakes at Hollywood Park on November 22. He got involved in a three-way duel for the lead on the outside of Massive Drama and Sky Cape, who tired after a half mile and finished tenth. Into Mischief got to within a head of Massive Drama in midstretch, but the latter rallied to win by 1+34 lengths.[8]

Into Mischief finished his two-year-old campaign by winning the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on December 22. In his first "two-turn" race at a distance of 1+116 miles, his main rivals were Colonel John, favored at 2–1, and Massive Drama at 3–1. Into Mischief was a relative longshot at 14–1. He raced just off the early pace set by Eaton's Gift, who tired on the far turn and finished seventh. Into Mischief took over the lead at the head of the stretch and won comfortably by 1+12 over a late-closing Colonel John. Mandella said that the colt "put it all together today", and Hughes had thoughts of winning his first Kentucky Derby. "Maybe this horse will be the one."[6][9]

2008: three-year-old season

[edit]

Into Mischief started his three-year-old campaign in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita on February 10, 2008, dropping back in distance to seven furlongs. His training for the race had been interrupted when Santa Anita was shut down several times because a newly installed synthetic dirt surface failed to drain properly after heavy rains. Despite this, he went off as the 7-5 favorite in a four horse field that also included Massive Drama and Georgie Boy, winner of the Del Mar Futurity. Into Mischief and Massive Drama vied for the early lead, running the first half mile in :45.27. Into Mischief started to edge away in the stretch but shied when jockey Victor Espinoza went to the whip, briefly shifting leads. He was caught by Georgie Boy, who drew off to win by 3+14 lengths. "I was lucky to get him to the races," said Mandella, referring to the interrupted training, "but we got through that and at least we're still in the game."[10][11][12]

Despite the loss, Into Mischief was still a highly ranked contender for the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Sportswriter Steve Haskin noted the colt's athleticism and said, "the race served as a good comeback performance that should set him up well for a return to two-turn races."[12] However, Into Mischief developed an abscess in his left hind hoof and missed several weeks of training, taking him off the Triple Crown trail.[13]

He returned to racing on October 25 in the 7-furlong Damascus Stakes, part of the undercard for the 2008 Breeders' Cup held at Santa Anita. The favorite was Georgie Boy at 7–5 with Into Mischief the second choice at 3–1. Into Mischief broke slowly and settled in fifth place along the rail. Rounding the turn he shifted to the outside and began to make up ground. Under a hand ride, he drew off to win by two lengths over Dancing in Silks (who would win the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2009) with Georgie Boy well back in fourth.[14][15]

Into Mischief made his final start in the seven furlong Malibu Stakes on December 26 at Santa Anita. He was the favorite in a seven-horse field that also included Colonel John (Santa Anita Derby, Travers Stakes), Bob Black Jack (Sunshine Millions Dash), Nownownow (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf) and Georgie Boy.[16] Bob Black Jack, who had set a world record for six furlongs earlier in the year, went to the early lead and was never headed, winning by 2+14 lengths. Into Mischief sat back in fifth place during the first half mile, then maneuvered for position and closed late to finish second.[17][18]

Into Mischief finished his career with three wins and three seconds from six starts, and earnings of $597,080.[2]

Retirement

[edit]

Into Mischief was retired to stud at Spendthrift Farm for a fee of $12,500 for the 2009 season.[15] In order to build support, Hughes offered a lifetime breeding right to breeders who completed "stands and nurses" contracts in each of his first two years at stud. Interest in him was moderate, and his stud fee dropped to $7,500 by 2012.[19][20]

Into Mischief's first crop reached racing age in 2012. His first winner was Avalon Rose, who won a five-furlong maiden race on July 5.[19] His first stakes winner was Goldencents, who won the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes. From a small crop that contained just 21 starters, Into Mischief finished third on the North American first-crop sire list.[21][22] Two members of his first crop, Goldencents and Vyjack, were starters in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Commenting on Into Mischief's unexpected success at stud, Hughes said "We don't really know what we have. We might have Mr. Prospector; it's not knowing."[23]

With the on-track success of that first crop, Into Mischief began to attract more recognition. The crop he sired in 2013 reached racing age in 2016 and started to move Into Mischief steadily up the North American stallion ranks. In 2018, Audible became his first offspring to be in the money in a Triple Crown race, finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. In 2019, Into Mischief was the leading sire in North America, with Eclipse Award-winning filly Covfefe being his leading performer.[24] His offspring are generally known as sprinters, although his more recent crops contain horses who are able to contend at longer distances.[25] Authentic became his first Classic winner in the 2020 Kentucky Derby.[26] Into Mischief was again the leading sire in North America in 2020 with record progeny earnings of over $22 million.[27]

In 2021, his offspring Mandaloun finished second in the 2021 Kentucky Derby and was later declared the winner after Medina Spirit was disqualified in February 2022 due to a positive drug test.[28] Into Mischief led the North American sire list for the third straight year, breaking his own progeny earnings record in the process. His stud fee for 2022 was set at $250,000.[27] He earned his fourth straight earnings title in 2022, again breaking his earnings record.[29] As of the 2026 breeding season, his stud fee remained at $250,000.[30]

Bred by James T. Hines Jr. in , Into Mischief is by the stallion Harlan's Holiday out of the influential broodmare Leslie's Lady (by Tricky Creek), a 2016 Broodmare of the Year who also produced champions such as Beholder (four-time winner) and Mendelssohn ( Turf winner). Raced by owner and trained by Richard E. Mandella, Into Mischief had a brief but promising career from 2007 to 2008, compiling a record of three wins and three seconds in six starts for earnings of $597,080. His victories included a debut maiden special weight at Hollywood Park and the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park, where he defeated subsequent Breeders' Cup winners Pioneerof the Nile and ; he also won the ungraded Damascus Stakes at . He placed second in the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes, Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes, and Grade 1 Malibu Stakes before retiring due to minor injury concerns. Since entering stud in 2009 at , initially for a of $35,000, Into Mischief has revolutionized modern breeding with his exceptional impact, becoming the first to surpass $225 million in lifetime progeny earnings (now exceeding $230 million as of 2025). His runners have secured 27 Grade 1 victories, including nine wins, and he holds records for most stakes winners from his daughters (35) and highest average earnings index (1.53). Into Mischief's stud has risen steadily to $250,000 for the 2026 breeding season, reflecting his dominance as the general sire leader from 2019 through 2025, with 2025 progeny earnings topping $34 million—another single-season record. He is the sire of three winners—Authentic (2020), Mandaloun (2021), and (2025)—tying the modern record and establishing him as the most influential Derby influence of his era. Among his most notable progeny are Eclipse Award winners Life Is Good (Breeders' Cup Mile), (Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint), and (Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile), alongside Grade 1 performers such as Oliver (Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup) and Citizen Bull (Pegasus World Cup). Into Mischief's influence extends through his sons, including top sires like and Instagrand, ensuring the expansion of his male line in North American racing. As of November 2025, at age 20, he remains a cornerstone of Farm's roster, with his 3-year-old crop in 2025 producing five new Grade 1 winners and continuing to break earnings benchmarks.

Background

Breeding and Early Ownership

Into Mischief was foaled on March 28, 2005, at James T. Hines Jr.'s Clarkland Farm in . He was bred by Hines, a prominent horseman who had acquired and retained the mare Leslie's Lady after her racing career, recognizing her potential as a broodmare despite her modest on-track achievements of five wins in 28 starts. Leslie's Lady, a daughter of Tricky Creek, produced her first three foals—including Into Mischief—for Hines, marking the beginning of a lineage that would later prove extraordinarily influential in breeding. As a yearling, the colt was consigned to the Fasig-Tipton Sale in 2006, where he sold for $80,000 to bloodstock agent Buzz Chace on behalf of Gage Hill Stable. The following year, at the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, Into Mischief was resold for $180,000 to , the founder of and owner of . This transaction represented a significant markup, reflecting early promise observed in the colt during his breaking and training phase at M&H Training and Sales. Under the ownership of Spendthrift Farm LLC—Hughes' Thoroughbred racing and breeding operation—Into Mischief, a bay colt standing approximately 16 hands, was placed in the care of Hall of Fame trainer Richard E. Mandella upon reaching racing age. His physical attributes, including a well-muscled frame and balanced conformation, were hallmarks of his sire Harlan's Holiday's lineage, which often contributed speed and athleticism to offspring.

Pedigree

Into Mischief is a stallion bred in by James T. Hines Jr., tracing his immediate ancestry to influential lines known for blending speed and stamina. His , (1999-2013), a son of Harlan out of Christmas in Aiken (by ), was celebrated for his precocity and versatility, winning the Grade 1 by 3½ lengths in 2002, the Grade 1 by four lengths later that year, and the Grade 1 Donn Handicap in 2003, amassing career earnings of $3,784,548 from 25 starts (8-5-3). Harlan's Holiday's pedigree emphasized speed through in the third generation, contributing to his explosive early-season performances. Into Mischief's dam, Leslie's Lady (1996-2018), a bay mare by Tricky Creek out of Crystal Lady (by Stop the Music), had a solid but unremarkable racing career with 28 starts, 5 wins, and earnings of $187,014 before transitioning to broodmare duties, where she produced elite runners including the multiple Eclipse Award-winning filly Beholder (by Henny Hughes), who secured four Breeders' Cup victories and career earnings exceeding $6 million, and Mendelssohn (by Scat Daddy), a Group 1 winner in Europe and victor of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and 2018 UAE Derby. Leslie's Lady's lineage introduced influences from Hail to Reason via Stop the Music, enhancing the balance of speed and endurance in her offspring. The extended pedigree reveals strong and influences on the sire side, with appearing 5 × 5 (6.25% ), promoting stamina, while the dam side carries Hail to Reason 5 × 4 (9.38% ), adding classic depth. These crosses underscore Into Mischief's genetic foundation for precocity, derived from Harlan's Holiday's speed-oriented Harlan branch, tempered by Leslie's Lady's proven broodmare prowess.

Racing Career

Two-Year-Old Season

Into Mischief began his racing career under trainer Richard E. Mandella, who emphasized developing the colt's natural gate speed inherited from his sire Harlan's Holiday, a noted sprinter known for early maturity in his progeny. The colt made a promising debut on , 2007, at at , winning a 6½-furlong maiden special weight race on the Cushion Track surface by 2½ lengths in a final time of 1:17.72 while setting fast early fractions of :21.87 and :44.58. Jockey guided Into Mischief to victory from just off the pace, showcasing the precocity expected from his Harlan's Holiday lineage. In his next outing, Into Mischief stepped up to graded stakes company in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) on November 22, 2007, at Hollywood Park over 7 furlongs. He finished second, beaten 1¾ lengths by Massive Drama after pressing the pace throughout the $109,200 event, earning a Beyer speed figure of 101. Into Mischief capped his juvenile campaign with a breakthrough victory in the $750,000 CashCall Futurity (G1) on December 22, 2007, at Hollywood Park, stretching out to 1 1/16 miles on the Cushion Track. Ridden by Espinoza from post 5 at 13-1 odds, the colt stalked the leaders before surging to the front in upper stretch and holding off Colonel John by a neck in 1:40.82, securing $450,000 in earnings and marking the first Grade 1 win for sire Harlan's Holiday. Overall, Into Mischief's two-year-old season consisted of three starts with two wins and one second, generating $448,800 in earnings and earning him a weight of 120 pounds—tied for second—on the Experimental Free Handicap, positioning him as a strong prospect for 2008.

Three-Year-Old Season

Into Mischief entered his three-year-old season with considerable anticipation following his promising juvenile performances, positioning him as a potential contender in the classics. However, his campaign was soon disrupted by injury, limiting his opportunities to showcase further development at longer distances. His sophomore debut came in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes on February 10, 2008, at , where he finished second over 7 furlongs. Ridden by , Into Mischief employed his characteristic front-running style but was unable to catch the winner in the stretch. He was then sidelined by a foot , missing the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and further spring races, including the . Following a period of recovery, Into Mischief attempted a comeback and secured his only win of the season in the Damascus Stakes (Listed) on October 26, 2008, at . Covering 7 furlongs, he rallied from just off the pace to win by three lengths under Espinoza, highlighting his retained speed despite the layoff. Into Mischief made his final start in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on December 26, 2008, at over 7 furlongs, finishing second. Minor injury concerns prompted his retirement from racing at age three. Overall, Into Mischief made three starts as a three-year-old, recording one win and two second-place finishes, a record that underscored his talent as a classic prospect before injuries curtailed his career.

Race Record and Earnings

Into Mischief competed in six races during his career, achieving three victories and three second-place finishes for a 50% win rate and no finishes worse than second. His total career reached $597,080, with significant contributions from graded stakes performances, including $450,000 from his Grade 1 CashCall Futurity win.
