Jacob Mueller (March 9, 1822 – August 31, 1905)[1] was an American politician who served as the tenth lieutenant governor of Ohio from 1872 to 1874.[2]

Jacob Mueller was born in Alsenz, Kingdom of Bavaria in 1822, and studied Jurisprudence.[3] He practiced law until 1859 when he originated and established the German Insurance Company for which he was Superintendent until 1869 when he resigned and returned to law. In 1849 he participated in the revolution in that country, and served for a short time as Chief Commissary, or Governor of his home district. He was compelled to leave the country, and emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio. He was naturalized, and affiliated with the Republican Party.

Career

Mueller studied law with Willey & Carey in 1850 through 1851; and was admitted to the bar in 1854.[3] He was elected to City Council. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was elected lieutenant governor in 1871,[4] and served one term. He afterward became a member of the Democratic Party.[5]

Death

Muller died in 1905 and was buried at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.[6]

Jacob Mueller was born on March 9, 1822, in Alsenz, Kingdom of Bavaria (present-day Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany), to manufacturer Wilhelm Müller and Anna Elisabetha (Geib) Müller. He received a common-school education and later studied law, beginning his practice as an attorney in 1845. Mueller actively participated in the German Revolution of 1848, serving as a civil commissioner under the revolutionary government. After the revolution's suppression, he fled to the United States in 1849, arriving in Cleveland, Ohio, in September of that year, where he joined his two brothers. In Cleveland, he continued his legal studies in the offices of George Willey and J.E. Carey while also learning English. He was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1854.

Career

After immigrating to Cleveland in 1849, Jacob Mueller built a career in law, business, journalism, and politics within the city's German-American community. Mueller studied law and English in the offices of Geo. Willey and J.E. Carey. He was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1854 and practiced in partnership with Benjamin R. Beavis and Louis Ritter until the partnership dissolved in 1859. He helped establish the German Insurance Company in 1859, serving as director and secretary until resigning in 1869 to travel in Europe.

Journalism

In 1852, with Louis Ritter, Mueller co-founded a stock company to publish the German-language newspaper Waechter am Erie. He later edited Waechter und Anzeiger.

Political career

Mueller represented Cleveland's 6th Ward on the City Council from 1857 to 1858. He was a delegate to the Free-Soil national convention in 1852 and Republican national conventions in 1860 and 1872. Elected on the Republican ticket, he served as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio from 1872 to 1874. He represented Cuyahoga County at the Ohio constitutional convention (1873–1874). In 1873, he left the Republicans to join the Democrats and was a delegate to the 1876 Democratic national convention. Appointed by President Grover Cleveland, Mueller served as U.S. Consul-General at Frankfurt am Main, Germany, from 1885 to 1891. In 1896, he published The Memoirs of a '48er, reflecting on his role in the 1848 German Revolution.
