'''Janine Reynaud''' (13 August 1930 – 13 May 2018) was a French actress known for her prominent roles in European exploitation, erotic, and cult cinema during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly through her collaborations with director Jesús Franco. Born on 13 August 1930 in Paris, France, Reynaud initially worked as a fashion model for designer Jean Patou before entering acting in the mid-1960s. She became recognized for portraying seductive, enigmatic, or sexually charged characters in genre films, often within erotic horror, spy spoofs, and giallo thrillers. Her breakout role came as Lorna Green, a mysterious nightclub performer, in Franco's ''Succubus'' (1968), which established her in the realm of cult European cinema. She starred in additional Franco-directed works such as ''Two Undercover Angels'' (1969) and ''Kiss Me Monster'' (1969), where she often played adventurous or provocative leads. Reynaud frequently co-starred with actor and director Michel Lemoine, her husband at the time, appearing alongside him in thirteen films, including titles that explored themes of sensuality and swinging lifestyles. Beyond her Franco collaborations, she featured in other notable genre pictures such as the giallo ''The Case of the Scorpion's Tail'' (1971). She retired from acting in the late 1970s after a career concentrated in independent and exploitation productions. She died in Sugar Land, Texas, USA.

Early life

Birth and background

Janine Reynaud was born on August 13, 1930, in Paris, France. She was French by nationality, with her birth occurring in the capital city during a period of interwar France. Detailed information about her family background, childhood, or early education remains scarce in available biographical sources, which provide few specifics beyond her date and place of birth prior to her professional activities. She later transitioned into a modeling career, beginning her public professional life in fashion before entering acting.

Modeling career

Janine Reynaud began her career as a fashion model for designer Jean Patou. She was known as a gorgeously statuesque and voluptuous redhead. Her work in modeling occurred primarily during the 1950s and early 1960s, before she shifted to acting in the mid-1960s. Reynaud later expressed boredom with the fashion industry, which prompted her transition to an acting career. Specific details about her modeling campaigns, photoshoots, or exact duration remain limited in available sources. She is consistently identified in contemporary accounts as a Patou model at the time she entered films in her mid-30s.

Acting career

Entry into acting

Janine Reynaud transitioned from a career in high-fashion modeling to acting in the mid-1960s. After working as a model for designer Jean Patou, she began appearing in films, marking her entry into the industry during this period. Her initial roles emerged in the late 1960s, primarily within the genres of erotic, experimental, and exploitation cinema, where she portrayed alluring and seductive characters that drew on her statuesque and voluptuous appearance. These early performances established her presence in European genre films, often featuring provocative and boundary-pushing content typical of the era's underground and cult productions. Over the course of her acting career, Reynaud accumulated approximately 31 credits as an actress.

Collaborations with Jesús Franco

Janine Reynaud is best known for her collaborations with director Jesús Franco during the late 1960s, a period when she starred in several of his surreal erotic and horror films that have since attained cult status. Her partnership with Franco produced three key works that showcased her in roles emphasizing seductive, enigmatic, and sexually liberated characters. Her breakthrough came with the lead role of Lorna Green in Succubus (1968), also known as Necronomicon – Geträumte Sünden. In the film, Reynaud portrayed an imperious nightclub hostess entangled in sadomasochistic fantasies, hypnosis, and murder, delivering a commanding performance that defined the movie's erotic and dreamlike atmosphere. This role remains her most internationally recognized and contributed significantly to the film's enduring cult popularity among fans of Franco's delirious cinema. Reynaud continued her work with Franco in the loosely connected "Red Lips" series, playing the character Diana in Two Undercover Angels (1969), released under alternate titles including Sadisterotica and Red Lips. She reprised the role later that year in Kiss Me Monster (1969), also known as Küss mich, Monster. In both films, credited sometimes as Janine Reynault, she embodied seductive undercover agents navigating bizarre adventures filled with erotic intrigue and exploitation elements typical of Franco's style. These collaborations occurred during her marriage to actor Michel Lemoine. Among Franco's early works, Succubus (under its Necronomicon title) achieved the greatest cult following, largely due to Reynaud's memorable embodiment of Lorna Green.

Other notable roles

Beyond her prominent collaborations with Jesús Franco, Janine Reynaud appeared in a range of European genre films, including giallo thrillers, spaghetti Westerns, and erotic features, showcasing her versatility across different styles and directors. She took supporting parts in notable productions, often in films that highlighted her screen presence in provocative or dramatic contexts. In Sergio Martino's giallo The Case of the Scorpion's Tail (1971), Reynaud played Lara, the mistress entangled in suspicions surrounding a millionaire's suspicious death and insurance fraud. She also appeared briefly as a prostitute in the spaghetti Western Blindman (1971), directed by Ferdinando Baldi and starring Tony Anthony and Ringo Starr. That same year, she portrayed Murielle in Max Pécas' erotic drama The Sensuous Teenager (1971), sharing scenes with her husband Michel Lemoine, who played Bruno. Reynaud worked with other directors such as Max Pécas in additional erotic works like I Am a Nymphomaniac (1971), and José Benazéraf in Frustration (1971), contributing to genres spanning spy spoofs, giallo, and adult-oriented cinema. Many of these roles coincided with appearances alongside her frequent co-star and husband Michel Lemoine.

Retirement from acting

Janine Reynaud retired from acting in the late 1970s. Her final on-screen appearance came in the 1978 film Tire pas sur mon collant, directed by Michel Lemoine, where she portrayed Mme de Tourville. This role is widely recognized as her last acting credit, marking the end of her career in front of the camera after a period of activity primarily in European genre films. No detailed public explanations for her decision to retire have been documented in available sources, and she did not return to acting afterward. She passed away in 2018.
