Jay Wheeler
View on WikipediaKey Information
José Ángel López Martínez[1] (born April 25, 1994), known by his stage name Jay Wheeler, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter. Wheeler first became widely known after a video of him singing went viral in 2016, after which he began pursuing a career as a musician. Signing with Dynamic Records in 2018, his debut album Platónico was released the following year, executively produced by DJ Nelson. His second effort, Platónicos, again produced by DJ Nelson, was released in 2020, and contained the successful single "La Curiosidad" featuring Myke Towers, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.[3]
Early life
[edit]Wheeler was born José Ángel López Martínez on April 25, 1994, to a working-class family in Salinas, Puerto Rico. He first developed an interest in music as a child through singing at his local church, where he also learned to play the piano. Throughout his teenage years Wheeler stopped singing and instead began experimenting with production, after developing a fear of singing in public due to the regular bullying he suffered at school.[4][5][6] At the age of 16, Wheeler separated from his girlfriend, an incident that inspired him to write a new song, "Ahora Estoy Mejor" and record himself singing it. After showing it to a friend, he was encouraged to post it online, where it went viral overnight, generating over 500,000 views and serving as a platform for Wheeler to seriously pursue a career as a musician.[4][7][6]
Career
[edit]Early years (2016–2018)
[edit]Wheeler used his newfound fanbase to continue to release music through both Instagram and Facebook, building up a steady following and earning the nickname "La Voz Favorita" (The Favourite Voice).[6] He would later choose to go by the stage name Jay Wheeler; he asked his fans to choose a name that would go with "Jay", eventually choosing Wheeler as the best suggestion; he believed "Jay Wheeler, La Voz Favorita" just sounded right.[6][8][4] After a steady number of releases between 2016 and 2018, Wheeler was noticed by Dynamic Records, who signed him to his first record deal. A video of Wheeler bought to tears on stage at the sight of fans singing his music went viral in 2018, and was later seen by DJ Nelson, who reached out to Wheeler and offered to be his mentor.[6]
2019–present: Platónico, Platónicos and work with DJ Nelson
[edit]DJ Nelson told Wheeler that he had an exact vision for him as an artist and offered to executively produce his debut studio album Platónico, released in 2019, containing the successful Otra Noche Más remix with Farruko.[6]
Wheeler began work on his second effort soon after, a sequel to his first album to be known as Platónicos. Released in 2020 and again produced by DJ Nelson, the album contained the hit single "La Curiosidad" featuring Myke Towers, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.[3]

Early life
José Ángel López Martínez, known professionally as Jay Wheeler, was born on April 25, 1994, in Salinas, Puerto Rico.[13][14] Growing up in a modest environment, he lived with his mother, who had him at age 17, in a small wooden house built by his grandfather in the coastal town.[4] From an early age, Wheeler showed an interest in music, beginning his musical journey by singing in church and learning to play the piano, which provided an initial outlet for his creativity.[13][15] During his childhood and teenage years, Wheeler attended local schools in Salinas, where he faced significant challenges from bullying that intensified in high school.[4][16] The harassment, including physical incidents like being slapped by peers, led him to become withdrawn and shy, causing him to temporarily abandon his musical pursuits out of fear and low self-esteem.[4][12] This period of adversity shaped his early experiences, as he navigated a humble upbringing marked by both familial support and personal struggles in Puerto Rico's tight-knit community. At age 16, Wheeler rediscovered his passion for music following a breakup with his girlfriend, an event that inspired him to write and record the song "Ahora Estoy Mejor."[3][16] The track, which he shared online, quickly gained local traction in Puerto Rico, marking a pivotal personal turning point in overcoming his earlier insecurities.[3]Family and relationships
Jay Wheeler married Venezuelan singer Zhamira Zambrano in an intimate civil ceremony on December 21, 2022, marking a significant personal milestone following their relationship that began in 2021.[17] The couple, who met through mutual connections in the music industry, have since shared glimpses of their partnership on social media, emphasizing mutual admiration and commitment.[18] The pair welcomed their first child, daughter Aiunii, in September 2024, transitioning into parenthood amid Wheeler's growing fame.[19] Zambrano announced the pregnancy in June 2024 with her single "Bienvenida," dedicated to their unborn daughter, highlighting the joy this brought to their family life.[20] As new parents, they have described cherishing family moments, such as their first holiday season as parents in 2024, which included collaborative music projects reflecting their bond.[21] In April 2025, Wheeler faced public backlash following an episode of his podcast "Random Chat," where guest TikToker Frederick (known as Flan de Coco) made derogatory comments about Puerto Rican women, comparing them unfavorably to Colombian women and sparking accusations of misogyny and cultural insensitivity.[22] Wheeler has spoken openly about how fame's temptations, like those in the entertainment world, do not sway him due to his deep love for Zambrano and desire to build a lasting family.[23] He credits his wife with providing essential emotional support, helping him balance personal priorities during demanding periods, while maintaining a grounded family dynamic.[24]Career
Early career (2016–2018)
In 2016, Jay Wheeler first garnered significant attention in Puerto Rico through a viral video of him performing "Ahora Estoy Mejor," a Spanish cover of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself." The clip, shared on social media, highlighted his emotive vocal style and quickly spread among local audiences, marking his transition from casual singing to a serious pursuit of music.[25][26] Building on this momentum, Wheeler independently released demos and original tracks on platforms like SoundCloud, Instagram, and Facebook, experimenting with reggaeton rhythms and heartfelt ballads to connect with fans. These early uploads, often raw and personal, helped cultivate a grassroots following in Puerto Rico. He further solidified his local presence through live performances at informal gatherings, such as "justas"—spontaneous street parties at college campuses—where his passionate delivery and interaction with crowds fostered loyalty among young listeners.[27] By 2018, Wheeler's growing profile led to another viral moment: a video capturing him tearing up on stage as fans sang his songs back to him, which reached producer DJ Nelson. Impressed by Wheeler's raw talent and humility, Nelson extended mentorship, praising him as "so humble, and he had all that talent." This connection facilitated Wheeler's signing with Dynamic Records as a partner, after label co-founder Luis "Siru" Suárez discovered his SoundCloud material. The deal provided crucial industry support, including production resources, amid Wheeler's prior struggles with unkept promises and financial setbacks in the local scene.[27]Rise to fame (2019–2021)
Jay Wheeler's breakthrough came with the release of his debut studio album, Platónico, on November 29, 2019, in collaboration with producer DJ Nelson under Dynamic Records. The 13-track project, executive produced by Nelson, showcased Wheeler's romantic reggaeton style and featured contributions from producers like Dímelo Siru, Los Vegaton, and Yeziell Yeziell, with Farruko appearing on the remix of "Otra Noche Más."[28] Standout tracks such as "Yo No Cambié," "Diferente," and "No Dejo De Amarte" highlighted Wheeler's emotive vocals and themes of unrequited love, marking his transition from independent singles to a polished major-label effort following his 2018 signing.[29] Building on this momentum, Wheeler and DJ Nelson released the follow-up album Platónicos in 2020, expanding the conceptual narrative of platonic relationships across 12 tracks. The album's lead single, "La Curiosidad" featuring Myke Towers, became a defining hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart and accumulating over 1 billion YouTube views by 2025, underscoring its viral impact in the Latin music scene.[30] A remix, the Blue Grand Prix version with DJ Nelson, JHAYCO, Lunay, and Kendo Kaponi, further amplified its reach, blending trap influences with Wheeler's signature melody. During this period, Wheeler solidified his presence through a series of high-profile singles and collaborations that emphasized his versatility in urban Latin genres. Key releases included the 2020 remix of "Lloras" with Cauty, Lenny Tavárez, Noriel, and Alex Rose, which explored heartbreak themes; "Vete Pal Carajo" alongside Yan Block and DJ Nelson, later expanded in a 2021 remix featuring Brytiago, Nio García, and Casper Mágico; and "No Te Enamores (Remix)" with Milly, Farruko, Nio García, and Amenazzy.[31][32][33] Additional singles like "Desnudarte" with Brytiago, "Conexión," "Si Te Veo" featuring Arcángel and Miky Woodz, "Fragancia" with Juhn, and "Otro Fili" with J Balvin further showcased his growing network of partnerships.[34][35][36] These efforts were complemented by increasing media visibility, including a feature in Billboard's Chartbreaker series in September 2021 and a sold-out concert in May 2021 with guest appearances by Brytiago and Yan Block, signaling his rising stardom.[27][37]Continued success (2022–present)
In 2022, Jay Wheeler solidified his presence in the Latin urban music scene with the release of his album Emociones on August 19, under Linked Music, Dynamic Records, and EMPIRE. The project featured introspective tracks blending reggaeton and trap elements, including the single "Desde Mis Ojos (remix)" with Chris Lebron and Sech, which highlighted his vocal range and emotional delivery.[38] Other notable releases from this period included "Si Te Preguntan" and "Suelta," which resonated with fans through their themes of heartbreak and resilience, contributing to Wheeler's growing streaming numbers.[7] Building on this momentum in 2023, Wheeler dropped Emociones 1.5 on April 25, an expanded version of his previous work that incorporated lo-fi influences and collaborations like "2022" with DJ Nelson and Dimelo Siru.[39] Later that year, he released TRAPPii on October 27, shifting toward a heavier trap sound while maintaining his signature melodic style, with singles such as "Dicelo," "Pacto," "Extrañándote," and "Textos Fríos" driving playlist placements. "Aunque Llegue Otro" emerged as a standout, showcasing his evolution in production by integrating smoother rhythms and urban beats. By 2024, Wheeler expanded his global reach with the album Música Buena Para Días Malos on April 25, emphasizing uplifting yet vulnerable narratives amid personal challenges. This period marked his international expansion through the TRAPPii Tour, which kicked off in the U.S. and included sold-out performances across North America, such as at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia, on June 16.[40] The tour extended to Europe, culminating in three sold-out shows in Spain—Madrid, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria—attracting over 20,000 fans and demonstrating his broadening appeal beyond Latin markets.[41] In 2025, Wheeler continued his prolific output with Girasoles on March 21, his most personal album to date, drawing from life's reflections and achieving over 90 million streams in its first ten days.[42] Key singles included "F.O.M.O.," "Si Te Vas" featuring J Balvin, "Por Fa No Te Vayas," "Ni Feliz Ni Triste," and "La Mentira Que Amamos," which blended bachata and reggaeton to explore themes of longing and closure.[43] A career highlight came during Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico residency at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, where Wheeler joined for a live performance of "Turista" on September 7, marking his first main-stage collaboration with the global star.[44] This preceded his own two-night residency at the same venue on October 17 and 18, underscoring his status as a leading figure in Puerto Rican urban music.[45] In November, Wheeler attended the 26th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, earning a nomination for Best Urban/Urban Fusion Performance for "Roma."[46]Musical style and influences
Genres and themes
Jay Wheeler's music primarily encompasses reggaeton and Latin trap, infused with elements of R&B, pop, and balladry, creating a modern urban sound that blends rhythmic intensity with melodic introspection.[47][48] His production style features smooth, melodic beats and lush instrumentation, often driven by Caribbean rhythms and soulful vocal deliveries that emphasize emotional depth over aggressive tempos.[49][47] This approach allows for Spanish-language storytelling that weaves personal narratives into accessible, danceable tracks, as seen in his use of trap-influenced basslines paired with romantic harmonies.[50][13] Lyrically, Wheeler's work centers on themes of love, heartbreak, and emotional vulnerability, often exploring the complexities of relationships through raw, confessional perspectives.[16] In his 2020 album Platónicos, these elements manifest in romantic ballads that delve into unrequited affection and fleeting connections, highlighting the tension between desire and detachment.[51] Heartbreak emerges as a recurring motif, portrayed with poignant urgency in songs that capture desperation and loss, such as those reflecting on failed romances and lingering pain.[47][52] Personal growth and transformation further define Wheeler's thematic landscape, particularly in later works like the 2025 album GIRASOLES, which structures its narrative around life's challenges—symbolized by planting a seed—evolving into periods of renewal and self-reflection.[42] Tracks in GIRASOLES balance universal emotional struggles with intimate familial dedications, underscoring resilience amid relational turmoil and individual maturation.[43] For instance, songs like "Abrázame Fuerte" emphasize devoted love as a source of healing, while others confront the vulnerability of abandonment and recovery.[47] This evolution in his discography reveals a deepening focus on emotional authenticity, using melodic urban production to convey stories of hope emerging from adversity.[42][53]Inspirations and collaborations
Jay Wheeler's early musical inspirations are rooted in his upbringing in Salinas, Puerto Rico, where he was immersed in church music from a young age. His mother and grandmother sang for the local church, and Wheeler himself played music there, fostering a foundation in melodic and spiritual sounds that later blended with urban genres.[2][16] Additionally, he drew from Puerto Rican reggaeton pioneers, viewing figures like DJ Nelson as mentors and icons whose foundational work in the genre shaped his approach to romantic urbano music, despite initial industry advice against collaborating with such "OGs."[9][54] Throughout his career, Wheeler has built key partnerships that highlight his collaborative spirit, particularly with established reggaeton artists. His ongoing work with DJ Nelson has been pivotal, including joint projects that emphasize melodic trap elements. He has featured alongside Myke Towers on tracks blending introspection and rhythm, and with J Balvin on releases exploring themes of fleeting romance. In 2025, Wheeler joined Bad Bunny for a high-profile performance during Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico residency, performing "TURiSTA" live at El Coliseo and marking a significant cross-generational moment in Latin urban music.[38][55][45][56] Producer influences have profoundly impacted Wheeler's discography, particularly on albums like Platónico and TRAPPii. For Platónico (2019), DJ Nelson served as executive producer, alongside contributors like Dímelo Siru, Los Vegaton, and Yeziell Yeziell, whose beats infused Wheeler's debut with a polished reggaeton sound that balanced vulnerability and energy, helping establish his romantic style in the genre.[28][3] On TRAPPii (2023), producers Botlok and Dirrty brought hip-hop and trap influences, merging Wheeler's signature emotional depth with harder-edged Latin trap production to create a more introspective yet dynamic album that evolved his sound toward contemporary urban fusion.[57][58]Discography
