Playing career
[edit]Exeter City
[edit]Prior to joining the Exeter City Academy, Storey played for South Petherton, Chard Town and Mere Town.[3] He joined Southern League Premier Division side Bideford on a short-term loan in March 2016,[4] before being offered professional terms in May of the same year.[5] He made his first-team debut for Exeter on 30 August 2016, coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute for Pierce Sweeney in a 4–2 defeat at Oxford United in an EFL Trophy group stage match.[6]
Storey joined Southern League Division One South & West side Tiverton Town in March 2017,[7] playing 6 times as they clinched promotion to the Southern League Premier Division.[8] The young defender began the following season on loan at Dorchester Town,[9] playing 13 fixtures before being recalled by Exeter in late October due to an accumulation of injuries to first-team defenders.[10] He made his league debut in a 1–1 draw at Mansfield Town on 28 October 2017, being subbed on in the 94th minute in place of striker Reuben Reid after right-back Kane Wilson was sent off.[11]
Storey's first league start came in a 1–0 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on 3 February 2018.[12] The following month, Storey scored his first goal in professional football − a left-footed volley in a 1–0 victory over Port Vale at Vale Park.[13] He made 17 appearances in all competitions scoring 2 goals during the 2017–18 season as he helped Exeter reach the 2018 EFL League Two play-off final, which they lost on 28 May against Coventry City.[14]
Preston North End
[edit]On 12 June 2018, Storey signed for EFL Championship side Preston North End on a four-year contract, moving for a 'substantial undisclosed fee'.[15][16] On 20 September 2021, Storey signed a 3-year contract extension with the Lilywhites following a strong start to the 2021/2022 season.[17]
On 19 January 2022, he was sent on loan to Sheffield Wednesday for the remainder of the season.[18] He would make his debut on 29 January, starting the game against Ipswich Town.[19] His first goal of his loan spell would be against Bolton Wanderers on 9 April 2022.[20]

Upbringing
Jordan Storey was born on 2 September 1997 in Somerset, England.[6][7] He grew up in the village of South Petherton, a small community in the same county.[8][9]Youth career
Jordan Storey began his youth football career in Somerset, starting out with local club Stoke-sub-Hamdon before spending a year in Yeovil Town's academy, which subsequently folded.[10] He then transitioned to playing men's football at a young age with non-league sides in the region, including South Petherton, Chard Town, and Mere Town.[6][10] At age 17 in early 2015, while playing as a central defender for Chard Town's under-18s team under manager Hung Dang and also featuring on Saturdays for Mere Town in the Dorset County League, Storey earned a call-up to the England Schools under-18s squad.[11] His selection came after successful trials for the South West representative team and two further national trials, culminating in a final squad of 18 players that included six from the South West region.[11] He made his international youth debut for the side in a match against Australia at Stafford Town FC on February 4, 2015.[11] Following his time at Mere Town, Storey trialed successfully with Exeter City and joined their academy as a promising defender.[10] To build experience, he was loaned out to non-league clubs while still in the youth setup, including spells at Southern League Premier Division side Bideford, as well as Tiverton Town and Dorchester Town, where he gained exposure to senior competitive football.[10] These moves helped develop his physicality and tactical awareness, preparing him for a breakthrough into Exeter's first team in 2018.[10]Club career
Exeter City
Storey signed his first professional contract with Exeter City in May 2016, at the age of 18, alongside three other academy graduates.[12] To gain experience, he was loaned to non-league clubs Bideford (2015–16), Tiverton Town (2016–17), and Dorchester Town (first half of 2017–18).[13] He made his senior debut for Exeter in the EFL Trophy against Oxford United on 30 August 2016.[14] His first league appearance came as a substitute in a 1–0 win over Mansfield Town on 28 October 2017.[14] Storey broke into the first team during the 2017–18 League Two season, making his first league start against Luton Town on 3 February 2018 amid defensive injuries.[15] Over the campaign, he featured in 17 matches across all competitions, including three in the play-offs.[13] Storey scored his first professional goals that season, netting the winner in a 1–0 victory at Port Vale on 20 March 2018 with a curling outside-of-the-boot effort from 20 yards.[13][16] His second came in a 1–1 draw against Cheltenham Town on 14 April 2018, a header from a corner.[14] These contributions helped Exeter reach the League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium, where they lost 2–1 to Coventry City on 28 May 2018.[17] In June 2018, at age 20, Storey transferred to Championship side Preston North End for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year contract.[18][4] In total, he made 18 appearances and scored two goals for Exeter's first team.[14]Loan spells
Storey's early professional development at Exeter City involved several loan spells to non-league clubs in the Southern League, providing him with crucial first-team experience as a young defender.[13] In the 2015/16 season, he joined Bideford on loan, where he began adapting to senior football in a competitive environment. This move marked his initial step away from youth ranks, helping him build physicality and match sharpness.[13][19] The following year, in 2016, Storey had a brief stint at Tiverton Town, further honing his defensive skills in non-league matches and contributing to his overall game understanding. These early loans were instrumental in his progression, as noted by club assessments of his growth through varied competitive exposure.[13][10] By the 2017/18 season, he spent the first half on loan at Dorchester Town, starting the campaign there and making appearances that solidified his readiness for higher levels. This period at Dorchester was particularly beneficial, demonstrating the value of the loan system in preparing academy products for professional demands, according to Exeter's then-manager Matt Taylor.[20][4] Later in his career, after establishing himself at Preston North End, Storey returned to the loan market in January 2022, joining EFL League One side Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the 2021/22 season. During this spell, he quickly became a regular, making 21 appearances and scoring 2 goals, helping the team in their promotion push via the play-offs, which enhanced his tactical awareness and consistency at a senior professional level. The loan proved pivotal for his development, as it reignited his form after a challenging period at Preston and contributed to his long-term role in the Championship.[21][22]Preston North End
Jordan Storey joined Preston North End from Exeter City on 12 June 2018, signing a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee after making just 17 senior appearances for his previous club.[23][24] He made his debut for the Lilywhites on 4 August 2018 in a 1–0 Championship win at home to Queens Park Rangers.[25] Storey's first season at Deepdale marked a breakthrough, as the 20-year-old featured in 32 league matches, establishing himself as a reliable defender in the Championship with his physical presence and aerial ability.[24] He scored his first goal for the club on 19 January 2019 in a 4–1 away victory over Queens Park Rangers.[26] Over the following campaigns, Storey became a regular starter, amassing over 150 appearances by 2025 and forming key defensive partnerships, including with Andrew Hughes, as the team pursued play-off contention in multiple seasons.[27] In January 2022, Storey was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season to gain further experience, where he made 21 appearances and scored 2 goals in League One amid the Owls' promotion push.[23] Upon returning, he signed a three-year contract extension on 20 September 2021, committing until 2025 following a strong start to the 2021-22 campaign that saw him anchor the backline effectively.[28] Storey extended his deal again on 31 December 2024 to remain at Preston until June 2028, a move praised for securing a proven performer amid the club's defensive rebuild.[29][30] Storey's tenure has not been without setbacks. More recently, in February 2025, he suffered a significant injury during a match against Blackburn Rovers, ruling him out for several months and prompting Preston to sign Ryan Porteous on loan as cover.[31] Despite these challenges, Storey has been lauded for his resilience and consistency, contributing to notable results such as a 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough in January 2025, where his defensive work helped secure the victory.[32] By November 2025, at age 28, he remains a cornerstone of Preston's defense, with a market value estimated at €3.8 million and a reputation for solid, no-nonsense defending in the Championship. As of November 2025, Storey has made 15 appearances and scored 1 goal in the 2025–26 Championship season.[6][33]Personal life
Background
Jordan Storey was born on 2 September 1997 in South Petherton, Somerset, England.[6][9] He grew up in the rural village of South Petherton, where he developed an early interest in football through local clubs.[10] In the summer of 2018, at the age of 20, Storey relocated to Preston, Lancashire, to sign with Preston North End, representing his first significant move away from home. He initially found the four-hour journey from Somerset challenging but has since adapted positively to life in the North West, describing the local community as friendly and supportive. Storey has emphasized the importance of building strong off-pitch relationships, noting that his happiness outside of football has been a key factor in his long-term commitment to the club.[29][10] Storey has candidly discussed personal struggles during a difficult period in his career around 2022, including uncertainty about his life direction and waning enjoyment of the sport due to various off-field matters. This phase, which coincided with a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, ultimately helped him rediscover his motivation and focus.[29]2025 assault charge
In January 2025, Preston North End defender Jordan Storey was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray in connection with an incident at Popworld nightclub in Preston on 14 January 2024.[34] The charges related to an alleged assault on Tomas Whatmough during a night out involving a group argument.[34][35] Storey made his first court appearance on 6 January 2025 at Preston Crown Court, where he pleaded not guilty to both counts.[34] The trial, initially set for 2026, was expedited and began on 6 May 2025, with a jury sworn in and proceedings expected to last up to three days.[34][36] At trial, CCTV footage captured a chaotic scene shortly after 2 a.m., showing a heated discussion between Storey and Whatmough, during which Storey pushed Whatmough after perceiving a headbutt threat.[35] The footage revealed that another unidentified man subsequently punched Whatmough, causing a fractured tooth and the bodily harm in question.[35] Storey, giving evidence on the second day, admitted to the push but described it as reasonable force in self-defense and denied inflicting the injury.[35] Whatmough testified that he did not threaten Storey and only learned of the punch from the CCTV review, as he had been too intoxicated to remember it at the time.[35] After 2.5 hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a unanimous not guilty verdict on both charges on 8 May 2025.[35] In a statement following the acquittal, Storey expressed relief at being cleared, stating his intention to move forward, while criticizing the Crown Prosecution Service for what he viewed as an unwarranted pursuit of the case, possibly influenced by his status as a professional footballer.[35]Career statistics
