Key Information
Club career
[edit]Early career
[edit]Iversen started out in the academy at Gørding LIF, after which he joined the biggest club in the region, Esbjerg as a 12-year-old.[2]
Leicester City
[edit]He moved to English club Leicester City in January 2016, signing a contract until June 2019.[4]
Iversen moved on loan to EFL League Two side Oldham Athletic in July 2018,[5] the same day as he signed a new four-year contract with Leicester.[6] He made his professional debut on the first day of the 2018–19 season, starting the game against Milton Keynes Dons.[7] Iversen helped Oldham to an FA Cup "giant killing" against Premier League side Fulham, saving a late penalty in a 2–1 victory.[8] Iversen would go on to make 49 appearances in all competitions for The Latics.[7]
In July 2019, Iversen moved to EFL League One team Rotherham United on a season long loan.[9] Iversen made his Rotherham debut on 3 August 2019, in a 2–1 victory over AFC Wimbledon.[10]
In August 2020, Iversen joined Belgian First Division A team Oud-Heverlee Leuven on a season-long loan.[11] Iversen started five games before suffering a hip injury in the match against Oostende. Following his return from injury, he became second choice goalkeeper behind Rafael Romo, which resulted in his loan being terminated on 7 January 2021,[12] allowing him to move on loan to English club Preston North End that same day.[13] He returned to Preston North End for a second loan spell in August 2021.[14] He was named as the Lancashire side's Player of the Year for 2021–22.[15]
After six years with the club, Iversen made his debut for Leicester on 23 August 2022 in an EFL Cup match away at Stockport County; he saved three penalties in the penalty shoot-out and was described as a "hero".[16][17] His performance was praised by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.[18] He made his Premier League debut in a 1–1 draw against Brentford on 18 March 2023.[19]
On 5 January 2024, Iversen joined fellow Championship club Stoke City on loan until the end of the 2023–24 season.[20][21] In April, Iversen said he expected to leave Leicester in the summer.[22] Iversen made 19 appearances for Stoke helping them to secure their Championship status.[23][24]
Preston North End
[edit]In May 2025, it was announced that Iversen join Preston North End on 1 July 2025 following the expiry of his Leicester contract.[25]
International career
[edit]Iversen has represented Denmark at youth international levels from under-16 to under-21.[26][27] Iversen was called up to the under-21 squad for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, playing in all three of Denmark's games and saving a penalty in a 3–1 victory against Austria.[28][29] In September 2019, Iversen received his first call up to the senior Denmark team for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Gibraltar and Georgia.[30]

Early career
Daniel Iversen was born on 19 July 1997 in Gørding, Denmark. He began his football career at the local club Gørding LIF, taking up the goalkeeper position at the age of six and quickly showing promise in youth competitions.[5] At age 12, Iversen joined the academy of nearby professional club Esbjerg fB, progressing rapidly through their youth ranks as a standout talent. By 2012, he was already featuring for the club's U16 team and earning call-ups to Danish youth international sides. His development continued to accelerate, culminating in him being named Denmark's U17 Talent of the Year by the Danish Football Association (DBU) in 2014, recognizing his performances at both club and international level.[6] During his time at Esbjerg, Iversen was spotted by Leicester City's Danish scout Ole Nielsen, who recommended the club pursue the young goalkeeper. In January 2016, at the age of 18, Iversen transferred to Leicester City for an undisclosed fee, signing a professional three-and-a-half-year contract until June 2019 and integrating into their academy setup to further his development.[7][8]Leicester City
Iversen joined Leicester City in January 2016 from Danish club Esbjerg fB, integrating into the club's academy system.[8][7] He progressed through the under-23 team in the Premier League 2, establishing himself as a reliable option with strong shot-stopping and command of the box, before embarking on a series of loans to gain senior experience.[9] His first loan came to Oldham Athletic for the 2018–19 season in EFL League Two, where he made 42 appearances and kept 15 clean sheets. After further academy minutes, Iversen was loaned to Rotherham United for the 2019–20 season in EFL League One, featuring in 34 appearances, keeping 10 clean sheets, and helping the team secure automatic promotion to the Championship as runners-up. The following year, he moved to OH Leuven on loan for the 2020–21 Belgian Pro League season, making 5 appearances and adapting to a new tactical environment abroad, which enhanced his composure under pressure.[10][2] Iversen's breakthrough at Leicester came with his first senior appearance for the club on 23 August 2022 in the EFL Cup second round against Stockport County, a 0–0 draw where he saved three penalties in a 3–1 shootout victory.[11] He made 12 Premier League appearances in the 2022–23 season, keeping 1 clean sheet. To continue building match fitness, he was loaned to Preston North End from January 2021, making 23 appearances in the second half of the 2020–21 Championship season and 46 appearances in the full 2021–22 season (keeping 9 and 13 clean sheets respectively), before a mid-season loan to Stoke City in 2023–24, where he recorded 18 appearances in the Championship.[10][12][2] In the 2024–25 season, Iversen returned to Leicester's first-team squad following the club's relegation to the Championship, but opportunities were limited amid competition for the goalkeeper position, resulting in just 5 appearances before his contract expired in June 2025.[13][14] Across his nine years at the club, Iversen amassed 24 appearances in all competitions without scoring, serving primarily as a developmental prospect who contributed to the squad's depth during title challenges and European runs.[7] Following his departure, he made a permanent move to Preston North End.[15]Preston North End
Iversen joined Preston North End on an initial loan from Leicester City in January 2021, where he quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper and featured in 23 appearances during the second half of the 2020–21 EFL Championship season.[1][16] His performances were instrumental in the team's defensive efforts, earning him the club's Player of the Year awards as voted by both fans and his teammates in 2021–22.[3] He returned to Preston on a second loan for the full 2021–22 season, making 46 appearances and further solidifying his position as the club's primary goalkeeper, contributing to a stable backline amid a competitive Championship campaign with 13 clean sheets.[17] On 27 May 2025, Iversen signed a four-year contract with the club, effective from 1 July 2025 following the expiry of his Leicester City contract, with the transfer fee remaining undisclosed.[15][18] In the opening months of the 2025–26 season, Iversen has continued as Preston's mainstay goalkeeper, recording 15 appearances in the Championship by November 2025, including 5 clean sheets while conceding 14 goals.[1] Across his loans and permanent spell, he has amassed over 80 appearances for the club as of November 2025, positioning him as a pivotal figure and potential candidate for captaincy.[17][2]International career
Youth career
Daniel Iversen began his youth international career with the Denmark under-16 team in 2012, earning his first call-up during the 2012–2013 season as part of the squad for friendly and development matches.[4] Iversen's progression continued to the under-17 level in 2013, where he secured 5 caps between January and December that year.[19] His involvement extended to the qualifying rounds for the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship (finals hosted in Malta), during which he played 3 matches, totaling 270 minutes and contributing to Denmark's efforts.[20][19] These appearances highlighted his growing reliability in competitive fixtures against European peers. At the under-19 level, Iversen featured prominently from January 2014 to March 2016, earning 5 caps.[20] He participated in the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers, providing solid performances in defensive setups during the campaign.[21] His role in these matches underscored his development as a key figure in Denmark's youth setup, often starting as the primary goalkeeper. Iversen made his under-21 debut in June 2017, marking the culmination of his youth progression.[19] He went on to accumulate 12 caps for the U21 team by June 2019, including appearances in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification matches.[19] Notable contributions included starting all three group stage games at the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where he saved a penalty in Denmark's 3–1 win over Austria and was rated as the tournament's top-performing goalkeeper during the group phase.[22][23] By 2019, Iversen had amassed 24 youth international caps across all levels, concluding his eligibility for youth teams that year.[19][24]Senior career
Iversen received his first call-up to the senior Denmark national team in September 2019 for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Gibraltar on 5 September and Georgia on 8 September, during which he remained an unused substitute behind Kasper Schmeichel.[25][4] In March 2022, Iversen earned another senior call-up for Denmark's international friendlies against the Netherlands on 26 March and Serbia on 29 March, where he again did not feature on the pitch but joined the training camp as backup goalkeeper.[26][27] Iversen was subsequently included in the Denmark squad for the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League A matches in June 2022, comprising fixtures against France on 3 June, Austria on 6 June and 13 June, and Croatia on 10 June; he served as an unused substitute in all four games.[28][25] As of November 2025, Iversen has accumulated eight senior international call-ups for Denmark but holds zero caps, with his non-debut attributed to intense competition for the goalkeeper position from incumbents like Kasper Schmeichel and Frederik Rønnow under head coach Kasper Hjulmand's selections.[25][28]Playing style
Goalkeeping attributes
Daniel Iversen stands at 193 cm (6 ft 4 in), providing him with a significant physical advantage that enhances his command of the penalty area.[1] His height and build contribute to strong aerial presence, allowing him to dominate set-piece situations and assert authority in defensive zones. Iversen has demonstrated a solid shot-stopping record in the Championship, achieving a save percentage of 71.4% during the 2025-26 season with Preston North End as of November 2025.[29] This performance underscores his reliability in facing shots on target, particularly in high-volume defensive scenarios typical of the second tier. His reflex saves have been particularly notable, including standout stops during his Premier League appearances for Leicester City.[2] During his Premier League debut on 18 March 2023 against Brentford, Iversen showcased quick reflexes with several key interventions that helped Leicester secure a 1-1 draw. He earned a nomination for the Premier League Castrol Save of the Month in April 2023 for an acrobatic reflex save against Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke, denying a close-range header in a 0-1 defeat. Similar reflex prowess was evident during his loan spells at Preston North End in 2020-21 and 2021-22, where he made crucial interventions in tight matches against promotion contenders. Early in his career, Iversen exhibited weaknesses in distribution under pressure, occasionally leading to turnovers in build-up play.[30] Coaching at Leicester City helped refine these aspects, though he has still been prone to errors in high-stakes moments, such as a costly mishandling against Millwall in November 2025. Iversen's penalty area dominance is further highlighted by his success in claiming crosses, recording a 66% high-claim rate in the 2025-26 Championship season as of November 2025.[29] This proficiency stems from his positioning and timing, enabling him to intercept deliveries effectively and reduce second-ball threats.[2]Distribution and leadership
Iversen's distribution from the back has been a key aspect of his goalkeeping during his spells at Preston North End in the EFL Championship. His short passing accuracy has been exceptionally high, reaching 100% in the 2021-22 season across 171 attempts, which has facilitated smooth build-up play and helped the team transition from defense to attack effectively.[31] Overall passing accuracy during that campaign stood at 62.8%, reflecting a balanced approach that includes more challenging distributions under pressure.[31] In terms of longer distributions, Iversen has favored direct goal kicks and launches, with long pass accuracy at 38.5% in 2021-22 from 1,074 attempts, a figure that has remained consistent in his 2025-26 season at approximately 33.5% as of November 2025.[31][32] This style aligns with a traditional goalkeeper profile, as noted by observers during his early loans, though his experience has led to refined decision-making in opting for safer outlets to wingers and full-backs.[33] Iversen has developed into a vocal leader within Preston's defense, using his position to organize and communicate with teammates. During his initial 2021 loan, he acknowledged becoming "louder" through increased game time, stating that experience allowed him to "shout more and organise the players in front of you," enhancing defensive cohesion.[34] This assertiveness has carried into his permanent return in 2025, where his presence has bolstered the backline's structure. His leadership qualities were particularly evident during the 2021-22 season, where he played 46 league matches, kept 13 clean sheets, and was voted both Players' Player of the Year and official Player of the Year for his contributions to the team's mid-table finish in 13th place.[3] Iversen's performances and on-pitch organization were instrumental in stabilizing the defense during the campaign, earning praise for his reliability amid a challenging season.[35]Career statistics
