Kelly Joe Goodburn (born April 14, 1962) is an American former professional football player who was a punter for seven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Iowa State Cyclones and Emporia State Hornets. Goodburn entered the NFL by signing as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1987. He played in Super Bowl XXVI for the Washington Redskins.

Kelly Goodburn attended Eastwood High School in Correctionville, Iowa, where he played multiple positions on the football team, including quarterback, defensive back, kicker, and punter. Goodburn helped the Raiders capture the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 1A state championship in 1978, as the team finished undefeated at 11-0 and defeated West Central-Maynard 21-20 in the title game. In the semifinals against Manilla, he recorded an 86-yard punt from his own end zone to the opponent's 2-yard line, establishing an Iowa high school record that still stands. He earned first-team all-state honors as quarterback in Class 1A following the 1979 season.

College football

Kelly Goodburn played college football as a punter for the Iowa State Cyclones from 1980 to 1983. He saw action in 22 games over his final two seasons there, recording 31 punts for 1,237 yards and a 39.9-yard average in 1982, followed by 35 punts for 1,333 yards and a 38.1-yard average in 1983, for a career total of 66 punts and a 38.9-yard average at Iowa State. In 1984, Goodburn transferred to Emporia State University and played for the Hornets. That season, he earned first-team All-District 10 honors and was named an honorable mention NAIA All-American, while also establishing the Emporia State single-season record for punting average at 40.8 yards per punt.

Kansas City Chiefs

Kelly Goodburn was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent following his college football career at Emporia State University and Iowa State University. Although he was associated with the team as early as 1986, he made his regular season debut in 1987 and served as the Chiefs' primary punter through 1990. During his four seasons with the franchise, he appeared in 48 regular season games. In those games, Goodburn launched 219 punts for a total of 8,812 yards, averaging 40.2 yards per punt. His consistent performance provided reliable field position for the Chiefs during this period. Midway through the 1990 season, Goodburn was traded to the Washington Redskins.
