''Kesan'' is an Indian space educator, entrepreneur, and social reformer known for founding Space Kidz India and pioneering hands-on space education programs that have enabled thousands of children to engage in real satellite missions and STEM innovation. Born and raised in a South Indian family, Dr. Srimathy Kesan faced early challenges when her dream of joining the army was denied and her marriage at a young age paused her personal ambitions. Determined to contribute to society and national development, she established Space Kidz India in July 2011 as an aerospace organization focused on democratizing space education, promoting art, culture, and science, and providing students with early exposure to career paths in technology. As CEO and founder, she has guided the organization in launching multiple student-built satellites, including Kalam Sat in 2017—the world's smallest and lightest satellite at the time, fully 3D-printed and recognized in several international record books for its innovative design and minimal weight. Under her leadership, Space Kidz India has hosted prominent figures such as NASA astronauts, Russian cosmonauts, and India's own Rakesh Sharma for student interactions, facilitated international collaborations including an Indo-Australian CubeSat launch, and empowered underrepresented groups through initiatives like AzaadiSat, built by hundreds of girl students. She currently serves as Mission Director for ShakthiSAT, a forthcoming all-girls lunar satellite mission involving participants from over 100 countries to advance gender equality in space exploration. Through these efforts, Kesan has inspired a generation of young innovators while breaking stereotypes in STEM fields and advocating for sustainable, inclusive access to space technology.

Early life

Dr. Srimathy Kesan was born and raised in a South Indian family. From a young age, she demonstrated leadership qualities, serving as a school leader and excelling in sports, including representing the state of Andhra Pradesh in basketball at the national level. She was actively involved in the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where she became the first female cadet to hold a sword and salute during a parade on 22 November 1992, earning recognition as a Senior Under Officer. She was also a paratrooper and silver medalist in All India rifle shooting. Kesan aspired to join the Indian Army, and her performance impressed General K.V. Krishna Rao, who offered her a direct entry without entrance exams. However, her father rejected this opportunity. She was married at the age of 18 in an arranged marriage typical of her cultural background, and became a mother at age 20. Following marriage, she focused on domestic responsibilities for many years, shifting from her earlier ambitions symbolized by the "sword" to household duties, often described as moving "from sword to spatula." Specific details such as her exact birth date and place are not widely documented in available sources.

Career

Notable achievements include the launch of Kalam Sat in 2017, a 3D-printed femto-satellite recognized as the world's smallest and lightest at the time. She has facilitated educational interactions by hosting NASA astronauts, Russian cosmonauts, and Indian cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma. The organization has also pursued Indo-Australian CubeSat collaborations and initiatives to empower girls in STEM, such as AzaadiSat. Kesan currently serves as Mission Director for ShakthiSAT, an upcoming all-girls lunar satellite mission involving participants from over 100 countries aimed at advancing gender equality in space exploration and conducting lunar surface mapping.
