A native Californian, she is also an accomplished singer, songwriter, and dancer who began her career at age four with appearances in more than 20 national commercials. Russell gained early recognition with roles in the Disney Channel television movie Jump In! opposite Corbin Bleu and Keke Palmer, and in the independent film Mississippi Damned, where she played Young Kari Peterson alongside Tessa Thompson. She has since built a diverse acting resume that includes guest appearances on series such as Modern Family, Girl Meets World, and ER, as well as voice work in Marvel's animated Spider-Man series. Her breakout role came as the tech-savvy zombie Eliza in the Zombies film series, which she has reprised across multiple installments including Zombies (2018), Zombies 2 (2020), Zombies 3 (2022), and the upcoming Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, as well as in the animated Zombies: The Re-Animated Series. In addition to acting, Russell pursues music with a five-octave vocal range and performs across genres; she collaborates with her sisters in the vocal group DANDRIDGE and has contributed original songs to projects including the soundtrack for Hank Zipzer’s Christmas Catastrophe. Her multifaceted career spans film, television, voice acting, and music, establishing her as a versatile performer within family-oriented entertainment.

Early life

Family background and childhood

Kylee Russell was born on October 8, 1996, in Panorama City, California, USA. She grew up in a family with connections to the entertainment industry, including her older sister Chelsea Tavares, who is also an actress. Russell has a younger sister, Hallee Russell, and the three sisters have collaborated musically in the vocal group DANDRIDGE. Her family's involvement in performing arts served as an early influence; she began her career at age four with appearances in more than 20 national commercials and obtained her first credited acting roles in 2005 at age nine.

Career

Early career (2005–2017)

Kylee Russell began her acting career in 2005 at the age of nine, debuting with a guest role as Young Shelly Williams in the episode "Shelly And?" of the sitcom Eve. That same year, she appeared in an episode of the medical drama ER. In 2006, she had a small guest role in an episode of the sitcom Still Standing. In 2007, Russell secured one of her earliest notable roles as Karin Daniels in the Disney Channel Original Movie Jump In!, a family-oriented television film that provided her first significant exposure within the Disney brand. She also appeared that year as Roxanne Chambers in the drama South of Pico. In 2008, she played an uncredited choir kid in the feature film Seven Pounds and guest-starred as Hannah in an episode of Just Jordan. Russell continued with supporting roles in independent films and guest appearances on television throughout the late 2000s and 2010s. In 2009, she portrayed Young Kari Peterson in the drama Mississippi Damned. She later appeared as Ruby in the 2015 film Where Children Play and as Sophia in the 2016 web series Virtual High. Her television work during this period included additional guest spots on series such as Family Time (2012), Chasing Life (2015), Girl Meets World (2016), Modern Family (2016), and Hank Zipzer's Christmas Catastrophe (2016). These roles were primarily supporting or one-off appearances, reflecting her development as a young actress through consistent but modest credits in both film and television without major awards or widespread recognition. This groundwork preceded her breakthrough starring role in the Disney Zombies franchise beginning in 2018.

Disney Zombies franchise (2018–present)

Russell has portrayed Eliza, a tech-savvy zombie and Zed Necrodopolis's best friend, in the Disney Zombies franchise since 2018. Eliza is depicted as Zed's voice of reason, an activist, and a rebel at heart, with strong computer skills that play a key role in the stories. The franchise includes the films Zombies (2018), Zombies 2 (2020), and Zombies 3 (2022), as well as the animated Zombies: The Re-Animated Series (2024), where Russell voices Eliza as a main character, and the upcoming Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires. In Zombies 3, Russell's pregnancy led to Eliza being shown primarily in virtual form, appearing on screens and via a robot body with only her upper half visible to accommodate the pregnancy. She filmed her scenes separately from the rest of the cast during summer 2021, interacting solely with voice recordings and a blank screen. “It was so different ’cause I’m used to being with everyone and feeding off of everyone else’s energy, but this time, I just had their voice recordings and I’m talking to a screen. And there was no one even on the screen. It was still really fun, and it was a challenge, and I like challenging myself. It was overall an amazing experience,” Russell said of the process. Russell gave birth to her daughter Greyson Blue Schmidt during production and brought her newborn to set for scenes filmed shortly after the birth, noting that having her daughter nearby made the experience easier. “I filmed that shortly after having my daughter Greyson. I brought her on set with me, and honestly, having her on set makes it so much better. I don’t know how I would’ve done it if she was at home. I would’ve just been like, ‘I need to go see my baby,’” she explained. This role marked a breakthrough for Russell, significantly boosting her visibility and building a dedicated fanbase through the popular franchise.

Voice acting and other projects

In 2020, Kylee Russell ventured into voice acting with her role as the symbiote Scorn in the "Maximum Venom" episode of the animated series Marvel's Spider-Man. This guest appearance featured her alongside other voice talents, including fellow Disney performers Meg Donnelly and Carla Jeffery. The episode marked a notable departure from her live-action work, showcasing her in an animated superhero context. Russell has also taken on supporting roles in several independent and streaming projects. In 2020, she played Minnie in the episode "Low on Fuel" of the teen drama series Girls Room. She later appeared as Hannah in the 2022 comedy film Crushed, directed by Niki Koss. In 2023, Russell portrayed Trinity in the mystery thriller #FBF (also stylized as #TBF). These credits demonstrate her continued activity in both live-action and voice roles following her rise to prominence.

Personal life

Family and relationships

Kylee Russell is in a long-term relationship with musician Gavvin Schmidt. The couple announced their engagement in 2021 and welcomed their first daughter, Greyson Blue Schmidt, in July 2021. Their second daughter, Lennon, was born in July 2025. Russell has two sisters: older sister Chelsea Tavares, an actress, and younger sister Halle Russell, a singer-songwriter. She has collaborated with both sisters on musical projects, including co-writing and performing the song "MY Christmas Love," which was featured in the TV-One movie Royal Christmas Holiday.
