He described his childhood and adolescence as happy, with a secular upbringing and summers spent in the family home on the island of Noirmoutier. Boyer completed a standard secondary education, earning a baccalauréat B. He then attended the University of Paris VII (Jussieu), where he obtained a licence and a maîtrise in letters, followed by a licence in musicology. After his licence in letters, he secured a position as an assistant French teacher. He also worked as a school supervisor ("pion") at the lycée in L’Haÿ-les-Roses for four years and as a socio-cultural animator, organizing evening mini-clubs and introducing activities such as card games, billiards, and music for young people. Television career

Television career

Laurent Boyer launched his television career in 1987 on the newly created M6 channel, where he was selected during a casting process alongside Nagui from among thirty candidates. He began presenting programs focused on music and entertainment, quickly establishing himself as a key figure on the channel. One of his flagship shows was Fréquenstar, a portrait and interview program dedicated to French music artists, which he hosted from 1989 to 2005. The format featured in-depth conversations with stars, earning the show cult status and Boyer the nickname "l’ami des stars" for his friendly approach to celebrity interviews. He also presented Graines de star on M6 from 1996 to 2004, a talent discovery program that launched the careers of artists such as Alizée, Jenifer, and Jean Dujardin. Other notable programs during his long tenure on M6 included Le Grand Classement from 2003 to 2005 and Jour J from 2005 to 2006, alongside specials such as Le concert pour la tolérance in 2009-2010 and Que sont devenues nos stars ? in 2010. After 23 years with M6, Boyer left the channel in 2010. He joined France 3 in 2011, where he hosted the daily regional magazine Midi en France from January 31, 2011, to June 19, 2015, traveling across France to highlight local stories and culture; he personally chose to end the program. During this period, he also provided commentary for the Eurovision Song Contest final in 2011 alongside Catherine Lara and presented the summer series Emmenez-moi from 2012 to 2014. From 2016 to 2020, Boyer presented Ma vie en Super 8 on C8 (formerly D8), a portrait-format program similar to Fréquenstar that revisited artists' careers through archival footage and interviews.

Acting and producing

Acting and producing

Laurent Boyer has had a limited but varied involvement in acting, producing, and writing, primarily consisting of guest appearances and behind-the-scenes contributions rather than leading roles. He produced one episode of the television series Fréquenstar in 1993. In 2012, he served as writer for one episode of the series Emmenez-moi. As an actor, Boyer has appeared in several French television series and a short film, often in cameo or supporting capacities. In 2000, he guest-starred in an episode of the comedy series H as L'animateur de Fréquenstar, a self-referential role drawing on his established hosting persona. The following year, he played the character Le ménestrel in an episode of La cape et l'épée (2001). His other acting credits include a role in the short film The Very Best of Trilport (2008), Le Ministre in an episode of Scènes de ménages (2017), and Max Manier in an episode of Captain Sharif (2018). Boyer has also made cameo appearances in music videos, including Ménélik's "Bye Bye" (1997), where he appeared alongside other personalities. A look-alike puppet caricature of him has featured in the satirical program Les Guignols de l'info since 2000.

Laurent Boyer was the long-term companion of French singer Alice Dona from the late 1980s until their separation. The couple has one daughter named Marine. On April 14, 2005, Boyer was the sole survivor of a serious car accident on the A11 motorway, where he was seated in the rear and credited his seatbelt for saving his life. The driver and a passenger were killed in the crash. In late March 2025, Boyer was placed in garde à vue in Paris following a complaint from an ex-partner alleging domestic violence and harassment. The allegations remain unproven, and he is pending trial scheduled for September 2025 in Paris.
