Birth and family background
Aketchi Luc-Martin Kassi was born on 20 August 1994 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.[2][3] Kassi grew up in Abidjan in a football-oriented family; his father and uncle were professional players. He developed a passion for football from a young age, often playing with friends during school hours and in the streets on evenings and weekends. At around 13 years old, he joined a small local training center in the city, marking the start of his organized involvement in the sport. Norwegian agents first spotted his potential around this time, though formal scouting occurred later.[4][5] Kassi holds dual citizenship of Côte d'Ivoire and Norway, reflecting his Ivorian origins and subsequent life in Scandinavia. Limited public information exists about his family, though he has spoken of the profound impact of losing his mother in 2018, an event that coincided with a challenging period of injury recovery during his career.[2][4]Youth development
Luc Kassi began his football development at the Sport Consultant Football Academy, a youth program in Abidjan owned by a Norwegian company.[2][5] The academy provided structured training for young talents in the region, focusing on technical skills and competitive play.[5] In the summer of 2010, at age 16, Kassi was scouted by Hallvar Thoresen, a coach associated with Norwegian club Stabæk, during a talent identification match in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.[5] Thoresen spotted Kassi's potential while he played for an opposing team, leading to an invitation for Kassi to participate in Stabæk's Junior Elite Tournament (JET) in Norway later that year.[5] This exposure marked a pivotal step, allowing him to train with higher-level European youth structures and demonstrate his abilities alongside other prospects.[5] Kassi relocated to Norway in 2011 at age 17, residing at Holtekilen Folkehøgskole while integrating into Stabæk's youth system.[5] He trained regularly with both the club's junior team and senior squad, honing his midfield skills in a professional environment that emphasized tactical discipline and physical conditioning.[5] This period of adaptation bridged his academy background with senior-level preparation.[5] On August 20, 2012, coinciding with his 18th birthday, Kassi signed his first professional contract with Stabæk, transitioning from youth development to the club's senior roster.[5] This milestone reflected his rapid progression and the club's investment in African talents scouted through international networks.[5]Club career
Stabæk
Aketchi Luc-Martin Kassi signed his first professional contract with Stabæk Fotball on 20 August 2012, coinciding with his 18th birthday, after training with the club for several months following his move from the Sport Consultant Football Academy in Ivory Coast. He quickly integrated into the senior squad, making his competitive debut on 16 September 2012 as a substitute in a 2–1 away win against Odd Grenland in the Tippeligaen.[6] That season, limited to five league appearances without a goal, Kassi witnessed Stabæk's relegation to the 1. divisjon after finishing 16th.[3] Kassi played a supporting role in Stabæk's immediate return to the top flight, contributing during the 2013 promotion campaign through the relegation playoffs, which secured their spot in the Tippeligaen for 2014.[7] His breakthrough came in the 2014 season, where he featured in 29 league matches (20 starts), scoring 5 goals and providing 4 assists, helping the team to a mid-table ninth-place finish.[3] Kassi's form peaked in 2015, his most prolific year, with 8 goals and 4 assists in 28 appearances (23 starts) as Stabæk achieved a strong third-place position, their highest league standing during his tenure.[3] Subsequent seasons saw consistent involvement, though interrupted by injuries, including a knee injury in 2020–21 that sidelined him for much of the year; notable outputs included 4 goals and 6 assists in 2017.[6] Over his ten-year association with Stabæk from 2012 to 2022, Kassi established himself as a versatile central midfielder, wearing jersey number 6 and becoming one of the club's longest-serving players.[6] In total, he recorded 200 appearances across all competitions, netting 43 goals and registering 30 assists. Stabæk endured multiple relegation battles during this period, including playoffs in 2016 and 2018, but Kassi's contributions helped maintain their top-flight status until relegation in 2022. His contract was terminated on 31 July 2022, releasing him as a free agent amid the club's struggles in the OBOS-ligaen.KÍ Klaksvík
In February 2023, Kassi signed a one-year contract with Faroese club KÍ Klaksvík as a free agent, reuniting with manager Magne Hoseth from his time at Stabæk.[8] As a central midfielder, he quickly integrated into the squad, bringing experience from Norwegian football to bolster the team's engine room.[9] During the 2023 Betri-deildin season, Kassi made 37 appearances, scoring 6 goals and recording 4 assists, contributing to KÍ's dominant campaign that secured the league title with 59 points from 22 matches. Kassi also contributed to KÍ's victory in the 2023 Supercoupe des Îles Féroé.[10] His versatility allowed him to operate in both defensive and attacking roles, often dictating tempo in midfield with his passing range and work rate. Representative examples include a goal in a 7-1 league rout of TB/FCS/Royn on 5 March 2023 and an assist in a 2-0 victory over NSÍ Runavík on 30 April 2023, showcasing his impact on key results.[10] Kassi's most notable contributions came in KÍ's groundbreaking 2023 European campaign, where the club became the first from the Faroe Islands to reach a UEFA group stage.[11] In UEFA Champions League qualifying, he featured in all six matches, totaling 542 minutes and scoring a crucial long-range goal in the 45+1st minute during the second leg against Ferencváros on 19 July 2023, sealing a 3-0 aggregate win over the Hungarian champions.[12] After defeating Häcken on penalties in the third qualifying round, KÍ faced Molde in the play-off round, winning the first leg 2–1 but losing the second 0–2 after extra time (3–2 aggregate defeat). Despite elimination, KÍ advanced to the UEFA Conference League group stage. Kassi featured in the ties against Molde. He appeared in three group-stage matches, including a historic 0-0 draw with Lille on 5 October 2023, marking the Faroe Islands' first point in UEFA group-stage football. Kassi left KÍ in March 2024, joining Swedish club Degerfors IF on a free transfer after his contract expired.[8] His stint at the club not only added to his trophy cabinet but also highlighted his adaptability in elevating a smaller nation's team on the continental stage.Degerfors IF
Kassi signed with Degerfors IF on a free transfer from KÍ Klaksvík on 7 March 2024, agreeing to a contract until 31 December 2025.[2] In the 2024 Superettan season, Kassi featured in 20 league matches for Degerfors, starting only three times and logging 547 minutes on the pitch. He recorded no goals but contributed two assists, aiding the team's campaign as they finished first with 55 points and earned promotion to the Allsvenskan.[13][14] He also appeared in two Svenska Cupen matches that season, playing 79 minutes without scoring or assisting.[15] Following promotion, Kassi's role diminished in the 2025 Allsvenskan, where he made three substitute appearances for a total of 25 minutes and no goal contributions.[16] His limited playing time reflected increased competition in the top flight, and he departed the club on a free transfer to Afturelding on 23 July 2025.[8]Afturelding
On 23 July 2025, Luc Kassi signed with Icelandic club Ungmennafélagið Afturelding on a free transfer from Degerfors IF, agreeing to a contract until the end of the 2025 season.[2] The move marked his return to Nordic football after a brief stint in Sweden, with Afturelding competing in the Besta deild karla, Iceland's top-tier league. Kassi was brought in to bolster the midfield, bringing his experience from previous clubs in Norway, the Faroe Islands, and Sweden. As of November 2025, Kassi has made 11 appearances in the league, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist, while accumulating approximately 500 minutes on the pitch.[17] He contributed offensively with his goals and assist, playing predominantly as a central midfielder and showcasing his versatility in both defensive duties and forward runs, with a reported 69% pass completion rate in his outings.[18] His performances have aided Afturelding in their battle against relegation in the Besta deild karla standings.[19] Kassi's impact was evident in key matches, where his physical presence and right-footed play aided transitions from midfield to attack. As of November 2025, he has expressed satisfaction with the move, citing the club's ambitious project as a motivating factor.[20]International career

Kassi holds dual citizenship of Côte d'Ivoire and Norway, rendering him eligible to represent either country at the senior international level under FIFA regulations.[2] Born in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, he qualifies for the Elephants through birthplace, while his Norwegian citizenship—acquired via long-term residency after moving to the country as a youth—allows selection for the Lions.[21][22] No public records indicate any prior commitments to either federation that would restrict his options.Senior appearances

In his debut season, he made 24 league appearances, scoring 4 goals, and featured in European qualifiers, notably scoring a long-range goal in the 45+1st minute during a historic 3–0 aggregate upset over Ferencváros in the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round.[25][12][26] Kassi's contributions extended to 4 UEFA Champions League qualifying matches and additional UEFA Europa Conference League games, aiding KÍ's domestic double of the Faroe Islands Premier League and Super Cup titles and their qualification to the Conference League group stage.
