Early life and education
Family background and childhood
Malu Galli, born Maria Luiza Reis Galli on November 17, 1971, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, grew up in the city's vibrant cultural environment during the early 1970s. [5] [6] She is the daughter of Humberto Galli, an engineer of Italian descent, and Vanda Reis, a teacher. [7] [8] Her family had no background in the arts, which contributed to her father's initial resistance to her pursuing an artistic path, while her mother consistently provided encouragement and support. [7] [9] This dynamic shaped her early years in Rio de Janeiro, where she developed an interest in acting despite the lack of artistic precedents in her household. [9]Acting training
Malu Galli began her formal acting training at the age of 10 at the renowned Teatro O Tablado in Rio de Janeiro, a respected institution founded by Maria Clara Machado.[10] She attended the school from ages 10 to 15, where she developed a deep connection to the stage, describing it as a place where she truly found herself and felt at home with the language of performance.[11] Following this initial period, Galli enrolled in a professional acting course at Faculdade da Cidade, taught by the acclaimed director and actress Bia Lessa, and graduated in 1990.[1][10] This training built on her early experiences at O Tablado and provided structured preparation under a prominent figure in Brazilian theater.[1]Career
Theater career
Malu Galli's theater career has been the foundation of her artistic identity, marked by a multidisciplinary approach in which she has worked extensively as an actress, playwright, director, and producer since the early 1990s. [12] She made her professional debut in 1991 with the play Mann na Praia, directed by Jefferson Miranda for the Cia. Teatro Autônomo. [12] In the 1990s, she built her presence in the Rio de Janeiro theater scene through roles in productions including Banheiro Feminino (1993), Minha Alma É Imortal (1994), A Ver Estrelas (1995), and A Noite de Todas as Ceias (1997). [1] From the 2000s onward, Galli expanded her involvement beyond acting, frequently taking on creative and leadership roles. She co-created and starred as actress in Conjugado (2004–2006), developed in partnership with director Christiane Jatahy. [13] [12] In 2007, she created and performed the monologue Diálogos com Molly Bloom. [12] She directed A Máquina de Abraçar in 2010. [14] Between 2012 and 2013, she directed and portrayed Clitemnestra in Oréstia, a free adaptation of Aeschylus's trilogy that combined dramatic text with original music and a contemporary sensibility. [15] Galli continued her collaborative and multifaceted work with Nômades (2014–2015), where she served as co-protagonist and producer alongside Andrea Beltrão and Mariana Lima. [12] In 2019, she made her debut as a playwright with Marta, Rosa e João, for which she also served as director and actress in the role of Marta; the play employed the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot as a structural device, generating varied narrative combinations across performances. [14] Her theater work has remained a central focus, with roles such as Aspázia in A Cerimônia do Adeus (2023) demonstrating her ongoing commitment to the stage. [1]Television career
Malu Galli made her television debut in 1992 with a role as Jurema in the miniseries Anos Rebeldes. [1] She followed this with early appearances and recurring roles in several notable series, including A Grande Família in 2001, Carga Pesada in 2005, and Mandrake from 2005 to 2007, where she portrayed Flávia. [16] Her career gained significant momentum with more prominent parts in TV Globo productions, beginning with her first full telenovela role as Lígia Pedreira (known as Liginha) in Três Irmãs from 2008 to 2009. [17] Subsequent major roles included Dora Reginato in A Vida da Gente (2011), Lygia Mariz Ortega in Cheias de Charme (2012), Rosângela in Totalmente Demais from 2015 to 2016 (88 episodes), Marta Gutierrez in Malhação: Viva a Diferença from 2017 to 2018 (213 episodes, reprised in the spin-off As Five from 2020 to 2024), and Maria Lídia Camargo in Amor de Mãe from 2019 to 2021 (94 episodes). [16] Galli continued to feature prominently in Brazilian television with Violeta Camargo Tapajós in Além da Ilusão (2022, 167 episodes), Mykhaila Lachovicz in Desalma (2022), Meire Carvalho in Renascer (2024), and Celina Junqueira in Vale Tudo (2025). [16] [18] After the conclusion of Amor de Mãe in 2021, she transitioned from an exclusive contract with TV Globo to a per-project basis with the network. [18] Galli has noted that television work remains essential for visibility in Brazil, even for actors primarily focused on theater and film. [16]Film career
Malu Galli's film career spans several decades in Brazilian cinema, where she has taken on a range of supporting and leading roles in feature films. Her debut occurred in 1998 with the role of Quinota in Policarpo Quaresma, Herói do Brasil. [19] She followed this with a portrayal of Chiquinha Gonzaga in O Xangô de Baker Street (2001). In 2003, she appeared as Mary Magdalene in Maria, Mãe do Filho de Deus. Her early film work also included a role in Maré, Nossa História de Amor (2007). In subsequent years, Galli took on more prominent parts, including the protagonist Ana in 180° (2010–2011). In 2018, she played Irene in Aos Teus Olhos and Nádia in Paraíso Perdido. [20] She starred as Tereza in Propriedade (2022–2023). In 2023, she appeared as Irene in Seus Ossos e Seus Olhos. Beyond acting, Galli has contributed as a producer on the short film Outras Pessoas (2010) and the feature Bocaina (2022). [16]Personal life
