Marjorie Stewart was born in Monterey, Virginia, to Annie and George Stewart, who were both formerly enslaved individuals. Her parents instilled in her the importance of education and perseverance.

The Stewart family moved north during Marjorie's childhood, seeking better opportunities and escaping the racial prejudice prevalent in the South. They eventually settled in Washington, D.C.
