Background

[edit]

Shostrom grew up in Hong Kong during the 1970s. He became interested in makeup after seeing The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Shostrom was encouraged to pursue makeup as a 13-year-old boy after befriending Evelyn Karloff, widow of Boris Karloff, the actor who portrayed the original Frankenstein's monster.

He is the winner of three Emmy Awards (out of four nominations)[1] and has been nominated for four Saturn Awards by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.[2] Shostrom designed and created special makeup effects for numerous cult horror films of the 1980s and 1990s, in particular the film series and sequels of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Phantasm and Evil Dead II.[3] He also contributed special makeup effects to music videos for "Pet Sematary" The Ramones and Nine Inch Nails.

Mark Shostrom is an American special makeup effects artist known for his influential work on 1980s cult horror films and his Emmy Award-winning contributions to television series makeup. Born in May 1956, he moved to Hong Kong at age 13 and grew up there during his teenage years before relocating to the United States in the late 1970s, where he pursued a self-taught career in makeup effects inspired by classic horror figures such as Lon Chaney, Jack Pierce, and John Chambers. After early industry experience, including assisting Rick Baker on Videodrome (1983), Shostrom opened his own studio in 1985 and quickly became recognized for creating practical creature effects and prosthetics on notable genre films, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), From Beyond (1986), Evil Dead II (1987), and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987). He personally supervised the makeup effects department on Evil Dead II and sculpted the memorable Henrietta creature suit for the film. Shostrom's work extended into television, where he served as a key sculptor and makeup creator on Star Trek: Voyager and earned three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Makeup for a Series for his contributions to Star Trek: Voyager (1996), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1998), and The X-Files (1999). His career highlights the enduring value of practical effects in horror and science fiction, spanning creature design, prosthetic application, and mentorship of emerging artists in the field.

Early life

Childhood in Hong Kong and early influences

Mark Shostrom was born in May 1956. He spent his early childhood in Denver, Colorado, where his fascination with makeup effects began at age 9 after viewing Frankenstein (1931), describing himself as being "bitten by the monster bug" during that viewing. This sparked his interest in monster movies and special makeup, leading him to explore makeup techniques through library books and self-practice, including purchasing his first supplies (such as Max Factor theatrical makeup) with his father's help at a local pharmacy. At age 13, Shostrom relocated to Hong Kong after his father was transferred to the U.S. Consulate there. Shortly after arriving, he learned that Boris Karloff's widow, Evelyn Karloff, was staying at a nearby hotel; following his father's encouragement, he delivered flowers and a note to her, which led to meetings and an 18-year friendship during which she encouraged his pursuit of makeup effects. While in Hong Kong during the 1970s, he immersed himself in diverse cinema—including Chinese films, European productions, and Spaghetti Westerns—often attending multiple screenings per weekend while focusing on makeup elements, and he continued self-teaching the craft despite challenges in sourcing materials locally. Shostrom speaks decent Mandarin and reads and writes Chinese in both Traditional and Simplified forms; he also swears fluently in Cantonese. In 1975, while still living in Hong Kong near the end of the Vietnam War, he and his mother volunteered as chaperones for the inaugural flight of Operation Babylift, a mass evacuation of Vietnamese orphans from Saigon; however, their flight was canceled due to safety concerns from rocket fire at Tan Son Nhut air base, sparing them from boarding the U.S. Air Force C-5A Galaxy that crashed shortly after takeoff on April 4, 1975, killing 138 of the 314 people on board.

Career

Entry into the industry and early credits

Mark Shostrom entered the special makeup effects industry after corresponding with legendary makeup artist John Chambers during 1976–1977. Following his relocation to Los Angeles, Chambers provided Shostrom with his initial industry contacts, facilitating his transition into professional work. His early credits include contributions to the films Android (1982) and The Beastmaster (1982). Shostrom's first major role came as a lab assistant to renowned makeup effects artist Rick Baker on Videodrome (1983). He continued building experience with work in the makeup effects lab for A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). In 1985, Shostrom founded his own company, Mark Shostrom Studio, to design and produce special makeup effects for film projects.

Breakthrough in 1980s horror films

Mark Shostrom's breakthrough in 1980s horror films began after he founded Mark Shostrom Studio in 1985, enabling him to design and supervise special makeup effects for several cult classics. His studio handled special makeup effects for A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), contributing to the film's grotesque transformations and monster designs. In 1986, Shostrom designed and supervised the Pretorius creatures and body prosthetics for From Beyond, creating a massive, multi-stage creature transformation that included complex mechanical heads and detailed practical effects. He described the Pretorius creature as an enormous pretzel-shaped construct that represented one of his largest early projects. Shostrom's most prominent work came as makeup effects supervisor and department head on Evil Dead II (1987), where he oversaw the entire makeup effects team and personally sculpted the Henrietta creature suit using lightweight fiberglass molds and urethane foam, resulting in one of the horror genre's most memorable full-body practical creations. This project marked his first time fully leading a makeup effects department on a major production. He continued contributing makeup effects to other notable horror films, including shared supervision on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), makeup for John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness (1987), Poltergeist III (1988), and special makeup effects for Phantasm II (1988). These collaborations solidified his reputation within the practical effects community for cult horror during the decade.

Television and mainstream projects

In the mid-1990s, Mark Shostrom expanded his career beyond independent horror productions to include substantial roles on major television series and mainstream feature films. He served as staff sculptor and makeup creator on Star Trek: Voyager from 1995 to 1997, during the first three seasons of the science fiction series. His work on the Star Trek franchise also included makeup contributions to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in 1993. Shostrom provided makeup effects for other prominent television series, including The X-Files in 1993 and 1998, Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1998 to 2003, and Charmed in 1998. Concurrent with his television work, he contributed special makeup effects to several mainstream Hollywood feature films, notably Men in Black (1997), The Devil's Advocate (1997), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). These projects reflected a shift toward larger-scale productions and franchise television, allowing Shostrom to apply his expertise in character makeup and prosthetics to broader audiences.

Later work and contributions

Mark Shostrom's later career saw him contributing to a variety of international and genre films through his expertise in special makeup effects. In 2007, he worked as special makeup effects sculptor on the epic war film The Warlords, starring Jet Li and Andy Lau. He subsequently served as makeup department head and special makeup effects supervisor on the 2013 action thriller Java Heat, which featured Mickey Rourke and Kellan Lutz and was filmed in Indonesia. His most recent credited work is on the 2017 horror film Amityville: The Awakening, where he provided special makeup effects. These projects reflect his continued involvement in practical effects supervision and execution into the 2010s, often in supervisory capacities on makeup teams.
