Masako Chiba is a Japanese former long-distance runner known for winning bronze medals at the World Athletics Championships in the 10,000 metres in 1997 and in the marathon in 2003. She represented Japan at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where she placed fifth in the women's 10,000 metres with a time of 31:20.62. Born on 18 July 1976 in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Chiba achieved early international success as a track specialist before transitioning to the marathon, overcoming significant injury setbacks to return to elite competition. Chiba began her running career in high school at Ritsumeikan Uji Senior High School, where she excelled in ekiden relays and served as team captain. She joined the Asahi Kasei corporate team after graduation and quickly rose to prominence, recording the second-fastest half marathon time in history at the time (1:06:43 in 1997). Her breakthrough came with a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, marking a historic achievement for Japanese women's distance running. However, shifting focus to the marathon led to repeated injuries, prompting a brief retirement announcement in 2000 at age 24. Chiba made a successful comeback, highlighted by a second-place finish at the 2003 Osaka Ladies International Marathon and a bronze medal in the marathon at the 2003 World Championships in Paris. She recorded a personal best marathon time of 2:21:45 in Osaka that year. Following her competitive career, Chiba has remained active in the sport as a race commentator, guest runner, amateur coach, and promoter of running in Japan. She has described the marathon as a sophisticated event that reflects a runner's life experiences, requiring both physical and mental endurance under varying conditions.
