Public perception and controversies

Critical reception of acting

Neha Sharma's has elicited mixed responses from critics and industry figures, often highlighting her visual appeal over performative depth, with frequent attributions to rooted in her modeling background and glamorous . In her Bollywood debut Crook (2010), reviews focused primarily on the film's topical handling of but offered scant praise for Sharma's role as Suhani, noting it as a standard romantic lead without standout execution amid the narrative's flaws. Subsequent critiques have echoed perceptions of superficial roles, with observers on platforms like describing her film parts as emphasizing "sexy songs" over substantive character work, contributing to her limited breakthrough despite physical attributes. In larger ensemble films like Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020), where she portrayed Kamla Devi, Sharma received acknowledgment for adequacy within constrained , with one review noting she "essays her part well" despite minimal opportunities for emotional range, overshadowed by the male leads and action spectacle. Another assessment described her contribution as providing "adequate support" but limited by the script's focus on historical valor, underscoring a pattern of peripheral roles that critics argue underutilize her potential. Sharma herself has voiced frustrations over industry biases, stating that her "glamorous avatar" leads to dismissals as a credible , resulting in rejections and replacements favoring de-glam or influencer alternatives. Praises have emerged more prominently in digital formats, such as her turn in the Illegal (2020), where commended her "convincing" portrayal that "stole the show," signaling stronger reception in non-theatrical mediums allowing nuanced expressions. Director Kushan Nandy of (2023) similarly labeled her a "fabulous " who has been "underutilised," citing her penchant for comedy during production as evidence of untapped versatility. Forum discussions and user reviews reflect this divide, with some lauding her as "competent" in series like those on , while others critique her as "not the " amid commercial successes by inferior performers. Overall, while empirical box-office data shows modest film impacts, her acting trajectory reveals causal links to selective scripting and perceptual biases, with digital ventures offering brighter critical footnotes absent in mainstream cinema.

Paparazzi and media intrusions

Neha Sharma has voiced concerns regarding paparazzi practices in Bollywood, emphasizing their intrusive nature toward female actors. In an interview on June 5, 2024, she described photographs taken from inappropriate low angles—often focusing on women's bodies—as "distasteful" and indicative of a loss of personal freedom, stating that such tactics compel women to self-censor their attire and public behavior to avoid exploitation. She further noted in the same discussion that these angles invade privacy by anticipating and amplifying wardrobe details for sensational effect, aligning with broader complaints from actors like Mona Singh about objectification. Sharma has also addressed the dual-edged paparazzi culture, acknowledging its promotional value while critiquing its overreach. On May 29, 2024, she explained that some embrace it for visibility, but others, including herself, object when it disregards consent, such as capturing individuals during unflattering or private moments like airport arrivals without makeup or in casual wear. In a May 22, 2024, statement to , she highlighted instances where people "look absolute worst" and explicitly do not wish to be photographed, yet persist, exacerbating feelings of vulnerability in public spaces. These remarks reflect Sharma's broader wariness of media intrusions, though she has occasionally engaged positively with at events, posing cooperatively without reported conflicts in those instances. Her criticisms underscore a pattern in Indian media where aggressive prioritizes viral content over subject autonomy, as echoed in contemporaneous reports on similar experiences by actors like and . No legal actions or specific chases have been publicly documented in her case, with her responses remaining verbal advocacy for boundaries.

Views on industry practices

Sharma has expressed discomfort with the industry's emphasis on social networking for securing roles, stating that she was initially advised to attend parties and be visible in social circles to gain opportunities. She recounted attempting to participate but finding it unappealing, noting, "I did go to a few things. You would probably be in a corner, and no one is talking to you," and rejecting the idea of directly soliciting work, as "I am an actor, I know how to act, I don’t know how to be, ‘Sir kaam de do.’" Instead, she prioritizes merit-based casting, accepting outcomes where roles are awarded for talent rather than connections. In casting decisions, Sharma has criticized the growing preference for social media influencers over trained actors, attributing it to producers seeking to leverage large followings—such as 30-40 million—to boost film visibility and attendance. She described a personal incident in November 2023 where, after completing multiple readings and bonding with the team, she was abruptly replaced via a phone call by an influencer with "millions and millions of followers," despite her preparation for the role. Sharma views this as a temporary trend, predicting that audiences and producers will eventually prioritize ability, as "people will eventually realise [it's] important to take one who can actually act." Sharma has advocated against normalizing , arguing in September 2021 that it—whether physical or mental—cannot be excused by economic pressures, as " at should never be normalised with certain conditioning where the 'need for job' is put first before 'human dignity.'" She highlighted how many victims remain silent to retain employment and starred in the Vikalp (2021), directed by Dheeraj Jindal, to depict such abuses in professional settings. Extending this to gender dynamics, she has pointed to systemic inequality in Bollywood, where women face fewer opportunities, demands to creative input, and differential treatment compared to male counterparts, calling for broader awareness beyond the industry. Regarding industry accolades, Sharma avoids Bollywood award shows, deeming them inauthentic, as "in most cases winners are pre-decided" and events feel scripted rather than merit-driven. On ethical standards, she has remarked that adhering to morals limits advancement, stating in May 2024 that "having morals doesn't take you very far in Bollywood," while acknowledging her own upbringing reinforced a strong ethical framework amid the sector's prevalent gray areas.
