Release and reception
[edit]R. P. R. of Kalki praised Manivannan's dialogues and Goundamani's comedy but panned the acting of Ajith and Maheswari and concluded the makers tried to create a rice out of mixing everything.[4] Two years after release, the producers were given a ₹5 lakh subsidy by the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi along with ten other films.[5]

Development
K. Subash, an Indian director and screenwriter born in 1959 as the son of Tamil film director R. Krishnan, wrote, directed, and produced the 1997 romantic comedy Nesam.[5][3] Subash had entered the industry as an assistant director on Mani Ratnam's Nayakan (1987) and made his directorial debut with Kaliyugam (1988).[5] The script centered on a protagonist's unconventional efforts to win over his love interest, emphasizing themes of love and perseverance.[1] The film was produced under K. Subash's Dhanooja Films banner, targeting emerging talent to suit the story's youthful tone. Ajith Kumar, riding high on the success of Kadhal Kottai (1996) which established him as a solo lead, played the protagonist amid his ascent to stardom.[6]Casting
The principal role of Nathan was assigned to Ajith Kumar, who was selected for his youthful charm and burgeoning reputation as a romantic lead in Tamil cinema following his earlier appearances in films like Aasai and Pavithra.[1] Maheswari was chosen for the female lead role of Madhu, marking her debut in the industry and noted for her fresh, innocent appeal that aligned with the character's romantic dynamics.[7] For the supporting cast, director K. Subash opted for established comedians to infuse humor into the narrative. Goundamani and Manivannan formed a comic duo, portraying Narasimman and Muthuvel Arunachalam respectively, drawing on their proven chemistry in ensemble comedies to provide levity.[8] Senthil was cast as Thanikachalam to add further comedic elements, contributing to the film's light-hearted tone alongside the leads.[8]Filming
The principal photography of Nesam was overseen by cinematographer S. Bernard, whose work emphasized the light-hearted and vibrant aesthetic required for the romantic comedy genre.[9] Editing duties were performed by Krishnamoorthy and Siva, who focused on maintaining a brisk pace to enhance the comedic timing and narrative flow.[9] Production faced challenges from delays that prolonged the shooting period, with leads Ajith Kumar and Maheswari spending nearly one and a half years on set while working on Nesam alongside another collaborative project.[10] These extensions tested logistical coordination, particularly for the film's action-oriented comedy sequences involving chases and stunts, though specific on-set incidents beyond timing issues remain undocumented in available records. The extended schedule also fostered on-set rapport between Ajith Kumar and Maheswari, contributing to their on-screen chemistry, as Maheswari later reflected on developing a personal affection for her co-star during the process.[10]Story and Cast
Plot
Ranganathan, an aspiring entrepreneur, seeks a business loan from a local bank but is rejected by the manager, the father of Madhu.[4] To influence the decision, Ranganathan begins romancing Madhu, but his feelings soon become genuine. However, when Madhu discovers his initial ulterior motives, she rejects him.[4] Determined to win her back, Ranganathan secures a job at the bank, leading to comical interactions with quirky colleagues and further romantic pursuits. These efforts blend humor with the developing relationship, while familial resistance and misunderstandings create obstacles.[4] Through revelations and persistent endeavors, the couple overcomes the challenges. The story concludes with love prevailing and comedic subplots resolved on an uplifting note.[4]Cast
The cast of Nesam is led by Ajith Kumar and Maheswari, with supporting performances from established Tamil cinema comedians that bolster the film's romantic comedy tone through their interplay with the leads.[8]- Ajith Kumar as Ranganathan: The central protagonist, an ambitious young entrepreneur whose determination drives the story's romantic and comedic pursuits.[1][11]
- Maheswari as Madhu: The female lead, portrayed as the principled daughter of a bank manager, contributing emotional sincerity to the ensemble's relational dynamics.[1][11]

- Manivannan as Muthuvel Arunachalam: Ranganathan's father, offering paternal wisdom laced with humor to enrich the family-oriented comedy.[1]
- Senthil as Thanikachalam: Another comedic ally, known for his physical humor that amplifies the film's lighthearted group interactions.[1]
- Sathyapriya as Madhu's mother: Provides maternal support and perspective, balancing the familial elements in the supporting cast.[1]
- Manobala as Telephone Booth Owner: A brief cameo role that injects quirky humor into minor scenes.[1]
Music
Soundtrack
The soundtrack of Nesam, composed by Deva, was released in 1997 by Music Master, consisting of five tracks with lyrics primarily by Palani Bharathi and Ponniyin Selvan.[12][13] The album showcased Deva's signature upbeat rhythms in several numbers, blending folk influences with melodic structures typical of mid-1990s Tamil film music.[14] The tracks were picturized as romantic duets featuring lead actors Ajith Kumar and Maheswari, alongside lively ensemble sequences that highlighted comedic and celebratory moments in the film.[15][16]| No. | Title | Singers | Lyricist | Duration |
