Off! (stylized as OFF!) was an American hardcore punk supergroup, formed in Los Angeles, California in late 2009 by Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba. In 2021, it was announced that the line-up had changed, with McDonald and Rubalcaba replaced by Autry Fulbright II and Justin Brown, respectively. The band were known for playing short, intense punk songs, with Pitchfork describing the band as "a vital blast of classic hardcore."[1]

Key Information

History

[edit]

The idea to form the band came after Coats had worked as producer on a prospective Circle Jerks album which ultimately fell apart.[2] During that time, Coats and Morris had written several songs together which they used to start Off!. The group made its live debut at the 2010 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Off!'s first Los Angeles show featured an original art installation by Raymond Pettibon at a downtown warehouse space.[3][4][5][6][7]

The first release by Off! was a 7" vinyl EP called 1st EP, which came out on October 13, 2010. That EP, along with three more EPs, were later released as a four 7" vinyl box set entitled First Four EPs on December 14, 2010. The collection contains sixteen songs, and featured artwork by Raymond Pettibon.[8]

In 2012, Off! released a full-length self-titled album. In April 2014, the band released their third album, Wasted Years.[9] Each of their albums has featured cover art by Pettibon, and each is 16 tracks long.

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers has been one of Morris' friends for over 30 years. Morris, at one point in the '80s, filled in for Kiedis at one of the band's shows. At every date on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm with You World Tour, Kiedis wore an Off! hat to promote the band. He also sported the hat in some of the band's music videos. Off! have also opened a few shows for the band. On their relationship, Morris said: "I've known Anthony since the beginning of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anthony and Flea are my friends, and if I want to go out and play shows with some of my friends, I'm going to. I've been playing music for over 33 years, and I have some friends that are in extremely large bands. We could go out night after night and play to people who know who we are, and that's all fan-fucking-tastic, but part of our job is to take it up a couple of notches. Those people may hate us, but maybe they'll love us. There's only one way to find out and that's to do it."[10]

In 2019, the band announced a new feature film and accompanying soundtrack album called Watermelon. The film was scheduled to start shooting in early 2020.[11] The film's Kickstarter, however, was ultimately unsuccessful, falling short of its $175,000 goal.[12]

In July 2021, after over a year without any updates, the band announced via Facebook that the film was still in production but that the band has "a new rhythm section."[12] The band at that same time released their first new song in seven years: a cover of Metallica's "Holier than Thou," which subsequently appeared on The Metallica Blacklist tribute album.[13] A music video for the song was released, and featured appearances by David Yow of The Jesus Lizard, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, cosplayer/actress Chloe Dykstra, and writer/director/comedian Derrick Beckles, among others. The new music video also revealed the new members of the band to be Autry Fulbright II (...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead) on bass and Justin Brown (Thundercat) on drums.[14] The band also announced that they were still working on the new album, and signed with Fat Possum Records who along with their next album, also re-released their back catalog.[15]

Off! released their fourth album, Free LSD, in September 2022. The band announced in September 2023 that Mario Rubalcaba was re-joining the band as drummer. Off! later announced the following year that they would perform three farewell shows in July 2024 to promote the studio album and the theatrical release of their feature film, now also titled Free LSD.[16]

The band drew on the members' extensive punk pedigrees to revive the raw, aggressive sound of 1980s hardcore, delivering short, intense songs typically under two minutes long that addressed themes of societal alienation, authority, and personal rebellion. Over its 15-year run, OFF! released four studio albums—The First Four EPs (2010), OFF! (2012), Wasted Years (2014), and Free LSD (2022)—along with EPs like FLSD (2023), earning acclaim for their ferocious live shows and contributions to the hardcore revival. The group announced its disbandment in 2024, culminating in final performances in , New York, and , accompanied by the release of the documentary film Free LSD.

History

Formation and early years

In late 2009, , the vocalist known for his work with Black Flag and , conceived Off! as a side project to explore fast-paced , drawing from his roots in the scene. Morris recruited guitarist , formerly of , through longstanding mutual connections within the LA punk community, initially collaborating on material that had been rejected during a Circle Jerks reunion attempt. Their partnership quickly evolved into the band's core, emphasizing raw energy and brevity inspired by early 1980s hardcore. The initial lineup solidified shortly thereafter with bassist of and drummer , formerly of and , forming a supergroup of veteran punk musicians. This configuration allowed Off! to channel the aggressive, no-frills style of their collective past projects—Black Flag and for Morris, for McDonald, and / for Rubalcaba—into a fresh outlet unburdened by prior band dynamics. In 2010, Off! released four limited-edition 7-inch EPs, comprising 16 tracks recorded at the band's practice space and mixed to capture their blistering intensity, with each song clocking in around one minute or less. These EPs featured artwork by renowned punk artist , whose stark, provocative illustrations complemented the music's urgency. Later that year, on December 14, Vice Records compiled the EPs into the box set First Four EPs, serving as the band's debut full-length release and garnering immediate attention for its return-to-form hardcore sound. Off! debuted live on May 2, 2010, at a warehouse on 6th Street in , where Pettibon's original art installation enhanced the event's underground vibe, drawing an enthusiastic crowd from the local punk circuit. The band followed with initial West Coast performances, including shows that built buzz through high-energy sets at regional punk gatherings, solidifying their reputation as a vital force in revitalizing the genre by year's end.

Breakthrough and mid-career releases

OFF!'s breakthrough came with their self-titled debut full-length album, released on May 8, 2012, by Vice Records. The 16-track record, produced by guitarist , clocked in at just 18 minutes and featured blistering, short songs averaging around one minute each, channeling themes of social critique including government control, societal complacency, and personal rage. Critics praised the album for reviving the raw, urgent ethos of 1980s , with noting its "blunt-force fury" and highlighting how the veteran lineup sounded "like hopped-up young men" in their high-energy delivery. Building on the momentum from their earlier EPs, OFF! embarked on extensive touring throughout 2012 and 2013, including North American headlining runs and support slots for prominent punk acts like Refused and Negative Approach, as well as European dates that expanded their international profile. These tours, often featuring high-octane sets under 30 minutes, solidified the band's reputation for intense live performances and helped propel their rising visibility in the punk scene. The band's mid-career momentum peaked with their second studio album, , released on April 8, 2014, also via Vice Records and self-produced by Coats. Maintaining the signature format of 16 concise tracks totaling 23 minutes, the album delved deeper into on and disillusionment while delivering unrelenting raw energy through muscular hooks and visceral riffs. commended its distillation of hardcore essentials, though it scored a 6.2, describing it as solid but in need of tighter editing to match the debut's immediacy. The release was supported by another wave of tours in 2014, encompassing over 50 shows across , further cementing OFF!'s status as a vital force in contemporary punk.

Later developments and disbandment

Following the release of their third studio album, , in 2014, Off! entered an eight-year hiatus, during which the band maintained limited activity while its members pursued individual projects. Frontman continued touring and performing with , including North American tours in 2021–2022. Guitarist focused on filmmaking and production work, while the lineup evolved with bassist Autry Fulbright II and drummer joining in 2021. This period allowed the band to recharge creatively, setting the stage for a revival centered on experimental material. The band reconvened in 2022 for their fourth and final studio , Free , released on September 30 via . Comprising 18 tracks, the marked a departure from their earlier sound, incorporating heavy punk, industrial elements, influences inspired by , and electronic noise, serving as the soundtrack to an accompanying of the same name. Produced by Coats, the record drew from sci-fi and themes, with Morris noting that its seeds were planted as early as 2014 during the cycle, evolving through the hiatus into a bolder, more adventurous project. In 2023, Off! announced the feature film Free LSD, a punk rock sci-fi comedy written and directed by Coats, starring Morris as an alternate-universe version of himself alongside band members and actors like Chelsea DeBo. The movie chronicles a fictional intertwined with the band's history, including references to their recording sessions, blending humor, elements, and music from the album. It premiered at the in January 2023 and received a wider release in August 2024, available on streaming platforms like and in a limited-edition Blu-ray format with bonus content in October 2024. Though not a traditional , the film provided an artistic capstone to the band's output, emphasizing their collaborative evolution. In 2023, the band released the FLSD EP on October 11 via , featuring four tracks including b-sides from Free LSD. On May 7, 2024, Off! revealed plans for a farewell tour consisting of three final performances, tied to screenings of Free LSD and featuring original drummer rejoining for the dates. The shows took place on July 18 in at Lincoln Hall (with ), July 20 in New York at (Le) Poisson Rouge (with ), and July 26 in at the Belasco Theater (with ), marking the band's last live appearances. These intimate events celebrated the film's rollout and the group's legacy, drawing fans for a high-energy punk send-off. In conjunction with the tour announcement, Off! issued a statement on their indefinite hiatus, effective after the July 26 show, citing a sense of creative fulfillment after over a decade together and a desire to conclude on their terms without immediate reunion plans. Morris emphasized shifting focus to projects, including new recordings, while affirming the band's lasting impact on punk. As of November 2025, no further activity has been announced, solidifying the hiatus as the end of Off!'s run.

Musical style and influences

Core style and song structure

Off! exemplifies a revival that draws heavily from the aggressive, no-frills ethos of 1980s punk, delivering short, explosive songs often under two minutes long, with early tracks typically lasting 30 to 90 seconds to maximize intensity and urgency. The band's albums consistently feature 16 to 20 tracks formatted like compilations of 7-inch EPs, emphasizing over melodic development, with a lo-fi production that captures the immediacy of DIY recording sessions often completed in just a couple of days. This approach prioritizes relentless drive, using simple verse-chorus structures with abrupt endings to mimic the brevity and punch of early hardcore EPs. Instrumentally, Off! relies on tight, propulsive dynamics that define their sound: guitarist delivers angular, hammering riffs reminiscent of atonal punk aggression, often played with a rhythmic precision akin to drumming. Bassist provides driving, straightforward lines that lock in with the rhythm section, anchoring the chaos without embellishment, while drummer Mario Rubalcaba's precise, high-speed patterns blend hardcore speed with controlled power. Frontman contributes shouted, urgent vocals that convey raw emotion, maintaining the high-energy bark honed over decades in punk. The band's sound evolved modestly from the ultra-raw aesthetic of their initial EPs—characterized by minimal overdubs and garage-level fidelity—to slightly more polished recordings in later albums, yet they consistently preserved a DIY punk through quick, self-directed production and avoidance of mainstream gloss. In live performances, Off! channels this intensity into high-energy sets that encourage mosh pits and crowd participation, fostering an anti-establishment atmosphere where the band and audience feed off collective aggression.

Influences and lyrical themes

Off!'s music draws heavily from the 1980s American scene, particularly the raw intensity and anti-authority ethos of bands like Black Flag, where frontman served as the original vocalist, as well as and , whose fast-paced aggression and social defiance shaped the band's foundational sound and attitude. Morris has reflected on Black Flag's unintentional role in creating a hardcore template alongside contemporaries like the Germs and , emphasizing an outsider perspective that permeates Off!'s work. Bad Brains' influence is evident in the band's exploration of diverse sonic elements, including and psychedelic textures, while maintaining a core punk rebellion against societal norms. Lyrically, Off! confronts themes of social alienation and personal exclusion, as seen in songs like "I Don't Belong," which Morris describes as capturing frustration with political climates and societal disconnection, appealing to outcasts through its raw, societal critique. Consumerism faces sharp rebuke in the band's rejection of passive cultural consumption and rigid punk conventions, with Morris advocating for active rebellion against the "rulebook" established since 1977, echoing a broader anti-establishment stance. Personal rebellion drives much of the content, fueled by Morris's enduring anger—sustained even after sobriety in 1988—often laced with sarcasm, as in post-breakup "love" songs that blend spite with defiance. Reflections on aging within the punk scene form a recurring motif, with Morris, at age 56 during early Off! recordings and 63 later on, channeling lifelong rage into lyrics that transcend superficial outbursts, drawing from personal trials like recovery and near-death experiences to underscore resilience and ongoing adventure. This evolution highlights a maturation from the smirking irony of his era to deeper introspection in Off!. The band's visual aesthetic reinforces these themes through artwork by Raymond Pettibon, whose contributions to Off! album covers—beginning with the 2010 First Four EPs and extending to Free LSD in 2022—revive Black Flag-era iconography of chaotic, black-and-white line drawings paired with provocative captions. Pettibon's style symbolizes revolutionary punk turmoil, depicting sinister figures, stoned youth, and UFOs to critique societal decay and authority, as in the OFF! EP (2012) cover's defiant "SATAN DID NOT APPEAR" amid an evil sorceress, mirroring the band's anti-authoritarian lyrical edge. Thematically, Off!'s early EPs channel immediate, visceral rage rooted in hardcore traditions, while later releases like Free LSD (2022) and the FLSD EP (2023) introduce introspective layers on mental health and psychedelics, with tracks titled "L," "S," and "D" representing hallucinogenic experiences tied to a companion film, blending rebellion with psychological exploration. Off! contributed to the modern punk revival through shared bills with younger acts like and , emphasizing song brevity, authenticity, and unyielding energy that bridges generational divides.

Band members

Members

Off! featured an original core lineup of four members who each brought extensive experience from the punk and rock scenes to the supergroup, with lineup changes occurring later in its career. All members remained active in various other projects concurrently, contributing to the band's raw, high-energy sound while maintaining their individual legacies. Keith Morris served as the lead vocalist and founding member, infusing Off! with his iconic punk charisma honed over decades. He co-founded Black Flag in 1976, fronting the band until 1979, and has led since 1979, delivering snarling, urgent vocals that defined early hardcore. Dimitri Coats, the co-founder and guitarist, shaped Off!'s riff-driven aggression with his production expertise and songwriting. Previously the frontman of , Coats also has a background in film scoring, including composing for projects like the band's own sci-fi feature Free LSD, where he handled multiple creative roles. Steven Shane McDonald provided bass until 2021, adding melodic undertones to the band's frenetic punk style through connections in the punk network. Produced by Coats, the album drew inspiration from psychedelic experiences, the lockdown isolation, and influences like , resulting in a hybrid of hardcore bursts, interludes, and thematic nods to and in songs like "War Above " and "Invisible Empire." This shift marked a bold evolution, with the album serving as the soundtrack to a companion sci-fi directed by Coats. It received widespread critical praise, and briefly appeared on the Heatseekers chart.

Singles and other releases

Off! released a number of standalone singles, often tied to album promotions or special projects, alongside several music videos directed by band members or collaborators. The band's early output included short, high-energy tracks suitable for 7-inch formats, though they primarily issued EPs initially. Representative singles include "Void You Out" in 2014, the lead track from their album Wasted Years, which addressed themes of historical revisionism with aggressive punk instrumentation. In 2021, Off! contributed a hardcore cover of Metallica's "Holier Than Thou" to the tribute album The Metallica Black Album (The Blacklist), released as a digital single with an accompanying video. More recently, "Kill to Be Heard" served as a 2022 single from their final album Free LSD, emphasizing psychedelic and sci-fi elements in its sound. Additional digital singles, such as "Oblivion" in 2024 as a bonus track tied to the Free LSD Blu-ray, highlighted the band's ongoing output even amid disbandment announcements. The Free LSD deluxe Blu-ray edition, released August 9, 2024, includes a bonus CD with three unreleased tracks: "Oblivion," "The Moon is Down," and "LSD." Music videos formed a key part of Off!'s visual promotion, often featuring raw, transgressive aesthetics directed by or associates like . Early examples include "Wiped Out" (2012), directed by Kern, which captured the band's chaotic live energy in a minimalist style. "Cracked" (2012) followed with stark black-and-white footage emphasizing Keith Morris's vocal intensity. The video for "Wrong" (2012), featuring , added comedic absurdity to the track's critique of conformity. Later videos like "Void You Out" (2014) incorporated hippie-bashing satire with fast-cut editing. For Free LSD, visuals turned psychedelic, as seen in "War Above Los Angeles" (2022), directed by Coats and starring band members alongside and the late . "Kill to Be Heard" (2022) continued this with hallucinatory imagery drawn from the album's accompanying film. The double video for "Time Will Come / L" (2023) featured cameos from , , and , blending live performance with narrative clips from Free LSD. Beyond singles and videos, Off! issued limited other releases, including digital-only tracks for tours and special editions. The FLSD EP (2023), exclusive to , included new material like "Keep Your Mouth Shut" with its official video, serving as an extension of Free LSD. No official split 7-inches with other bands were produced, though the band's initial four 7-inch EPs (2010–2011) laid the groundwork for their raw, standalone track approach. While no formal video compilations exist, YouTube hosts extensive live clips from 2010 to 2024, documenting performances at festivals like Bowling and intimate venues, preserving the band's high-octane stage presence.
