The English–Irish boy band One Direction have released five studio albums, ten extended plays, seventeen singles (including two charity singles), two video albums, and seventeen music videos. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and finishing third in the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010.[1] They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records.[2] One Direction: This Is Us, a 3D documentary concert film was released on 29 August 2013 in the United Kingdom and 30 August 2013 in the United States.[3] The film captures the band on the road during the Take Me Home Tour and documents their origins and rise to fame.
The group's debut studio album Up All Night was released on 18 November 2011. It topped the charts in sixteen countries. The lead single, "What Makes You Beautiful", was an international hit, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100; it has since been certified four and six times platinum in the US and Australia, respectively. Subsequent singles, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing", became top ten hits in the UK. The band's second studio album Take Me Home was released 9 November 2012.[4] The record sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and went to number-one in thirty-five countries.[5][6] The album's lead single, "Live While We're Young", became One Direction's highest-peaking song in a number of countries and recorded the highest first-week sales for a song by a non-US artist.[7] "Little Things" and "Kiss You", the succeeding singles, became moderate successes.
One Direction's third studio album, Midnight Memories, was released on 25 November 2013. The album was preceded by its lead single "Best Song Ever" and its critically acclaimed second single "Story of My Life". The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, making One Direction the first band in history to have their first three albums all debut atop the Billboard 200. With their fourth album, Four, released on 17 November 2014, they extended the record to four consecutive number-one albums. Their next album, Made in the A.M. was released on 13 November 2015 & was preceded by its lead single "Drag Me Down".[8] In October 2015, the band announced the second single from the album, "Perfect". As of May 2022, the band has sold more than 70 million records worldwide and over 21 million in their home country.[9][10][11] According to Recording Industry Association of America, One Direction has sold 13.5 million digital singles and 12 million albums in the United States.

Studio albums
One Direction released five studio albums between 2011 and 2015, all of which achieved commercial success and topped charts in multiple countries. The band's discography includes pop and pop-rock recordings produced primarily by teams involving Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, and others, with the band's records collectively selling over 70 million copies worldwide, contributed to by their albums.[4] Following Liam Payne's death in 2024, all five albums re-entered the Billboard 200 in late 2024.[4] Each album was issued in standard and deluxe editions, available on CD, digital download, and later vinyl formats, with regional variations such as expanded Japanese editions featuring additional tracks.[5][6] The debut album, Up All Night, was released on 21 November 2011 in the UK and Ireland, and internationally on 13 March 2012. It peaked at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the US Billboard 200, with US sales exceeding 2.095 million copies and worldwide pure sales of 6.25 million.[1][7][6] The album received 3× Platinum certification in the UK and 5× Platinum in Australia.[8][9] Formats included a standard 13-track CD, a deluxe edition with four bonus tracks, and a souvenir edition with a book. Its lead single, "What Makes You Beautiful," contributed to the album's international breakthrough. Take Me Home, the second studio album, followed on 9 November 2012. It debuted at number 1 on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, selling 2.043 million copies in the US and 6.3 million worldwide.[1][7][6] Certified 3× Platinum in the UK and 3× Platinum in Australia, the album was released in standard, deluxe (with four bonus tracks), and A5 yearbook formats.[8] The third album, Midnight Memories, arrived on 25 November 2013 and marked the band's best-selling release, with 5.25 million worldwide pure sales and 1.552 million in the US.[6][1] It topped the UK Albums Chart for two weeks and the US Billboard 200, earning 3× Platinum status in the UK.[7][8] Available in standard, deluxe, and ultimate editions (with additional content), it included a Japanese edition with exclusive tracks.[10] Four, released on 17 November 2014, featured significant input from producers Julian Bunetta and John Ryan, with band members Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne co-writing several tracks. Extended plays
One Direction released their first extended play, iTunes Festival: London 2012, on September 20, 2012, as an exclusive digital live recording capturing performances from their appearance at the iTunes Festival in London.[13] The EP, consisting of six tracks from their debut album Up All Night, peaked at number 15 on the US iTunes albums chart.[14] Later that year, Live While We're Young followed as a promotional EP tied to the lead single from their second studio album Take Me Home, released digitally on September 28, 2012, and featuring remixes and the title track.[15] It served to build anticipation for the album's full release, emphasizing upbeat pop elements in its four tracks. In 2013, Best Song Ever (From "This Is Us") was issued on July 22 as a companion to the band's 3D concert film One Direction: This Is Us, including the title single and three additional versions such as a remix and a 7-inch edit.[16] The EP highlighted the group's cinematic tie-in promotions and debuted strongly on digital platforms. The Midnight Memories EP arrived in 2013, compiling the title track from their third studio album alongside live performances like "Story of My Life" from The X Factor and "Rock Me" from the This Is Us film soundtrack.[17] Released digitally on November 25, 2013, to coincide with the album launch, it focused on extending the rock-infused themes of Midnight Memories.[18] You & I, another single-focused EP, was released on April 15, 2014, featuring multiple versions of the ballad from Midnight Memories, including a radio edit, duet with guest vocals, and piano rendition.[19] With five tracks, it underscored the song's romantic narrative and supported its rollout as the album's fourth single. Perfect, issued on October 16, 2015, promoted the second single from Made in the A.M. through stripped-back and remix variants, including an acoustic "Perfect," the exclusive track "Home," and collaborations like the Matoma remix.[20] The four-track digital release emphasized the band's maturing sound during their final album era before hiatus. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of their formation on The X Factor in 2010, One Direction released four thematic EPs on July 23, 2020, via digital platforms under Syco Music.[21] The Acoustic EP offered reimagined versions of early hits, such as acoustic renditions of "One Thing" from Up All Night and "Night Changes" from Four, alongside live acoustic sessions, providing fans with intimate reinterpretations of their catalog.[22] The Live EP captured raw energy from their formative years with five live recordings, including "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Gotta Be You" from Up All Night, sourced from early tour performances.[23] Rarities compiled previously unreleased or alternate takes, such as radio, duet, and piano editions of "You & I," plus the standalone "Home" from the Perfect EP, highlighting hidden gems from their discography.[24] Finally, Remixes gathered 14 dance-oriented reworkings of tracks like "Gotta Be You" (Steve Smart & Westfunk Remix) and "Live While We're Young" (Dave Aude Remix), showcasing electronic adaptations from across their career.[25] These anniversary EPs collectively revived interest in the band's legacy, driving streams and sales surges for their full catalog in the weeks following release.[26]| Title | Release Date | Label | Selected Chart Peaks |

Video albums
One Direction released two official video albums documenting their live tours, capturing the energy of their performances and providing fans with behind-the-scenes insights into their rise to global stardom. These releases, available in DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download formats, complemented the band's studio albums by showcasing the live interpretations of their hit songs during major tours. Both video albums achieved significant commercial success, reflecting the band's massive fanbase and the demand for visual content from their concerts.[27][28] The first video album, Up All Night: The Live Tour, was released on 28 May 2012 by Syco Music and Columbia Records. Filmed during the band's debut headlining tour at the Bournemouth International Centre in January 2012, it features a 73-minute full concert performance including tracks from their self-titled debut studio album, such as "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing," along with behind-the-scenes footage and three music videos. The release debuted at number one on the Billboard Music Video Sales chart, selling 76,000 copies in its first week, and ultimately achieved sales of approximately 1.6 million units worldwide. It received multi-platinum certifications, including 2× Platinum in the United Kingdom by the BPI for 100,000 units and 5× Platinum in the United States by the RIAA for 500,000 units.[29][6][27] The second video album, Where We Are: The Concert Film, arrived following the band's ambitious stadium tour of the same name, supporting their third studio album Midnight Memories. The concert footage was recorded on 28 and 29 June 2014 at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, capturing a 96-minute performance of 23 tracks like "Story of My Life" and "Best Song Ever," interspersed with 15 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews and tour highlights. It premiered in theaters worldwide on 11 October 2014 for a limited two-day run, grossing $5.4 million globally, before the home video edition launched on DVD and Blu-ray on 2 December 2014. The video album sold around 700,000 units, underscoring the enduring appeal of One Direction's live shows even as the band approached a hiatus.[30][31][6]Singles and songs
As lead artist
One Direction released seventeen singles as the lead artist from 2011 to 2015, primarily to promote their five studio albums, with two charity releases benefiting Comic Relief. These tracks were typically issued in digital download formats worldwide, alongside physical CD singles in markets like the UK and select vinyl editions for later releases such as "Drag Me Down." Several included B-sides or bonus tracks on digital EPs, such as "I Should Have Kissed You" paired with "What Makes You Beautiful" in some bundles. The singles achieved significant global success, topping charts in multiple countries and accumulating over 100 million combined sales and streams, though the group never reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.[7][32] The debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful" from Up All Night, marked the group's breakthrough, debuting at number one on the UK Singles Chart and peaking at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was certified four-times platinum by the RIAA in the US for four million units sold and four-times platinum by the BPI in the UK. "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing," also from Up All Night, followed with top-ten UK peaks but limited US Hot 100 entry, the former bubbling under at number 124 equivalent.[7][32][33] From Take Me Home, "Live While We're Young" debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest entry for a UK group at the time, and was certified 2× platinum by the RIAA (as of 2013; equivalent units exceed 3 million as of 2025). "Little Things" topped the UK chart, while "Kiss You" from the deluxe edition reached number nine there and number 46 in the US. The charity cover "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)," a mashup benefiting Comic Relief, also hit number one in the UK and peaked at number 13 on the Hot 100.[7][34][35] The Midnight Memories era yielded the group's highest US peak with "Best Song Ever" at number two on the Hot 100 and Platinum RIAA certification (as of 2025). "Story of My Life" followed at number six in the US, earning triple platinum from the RIAA and triple platinum from the BPI. The title track "Midnight Memories" charted modestly at number 39 in the UK but reached number 12 in the US. "You & I," from the deluxe reissue, peaked at number 19 on both charts.[7][32][36][37] Four produced "Steal My Girl," which hit number three in the UK and number 13 in the US with RIAA platinum status, and "Night Changes" at number six in the UK and number 28 in the US, also platinum-certified by the RIAA. The final album Made in the A.M. featured "Drag Me Down," the group's first post-Zayn Malik release, debuting at number three on the Hot 100—the highest US debut of 2015—and certified platinum by the RIAA (equivalent units exceed 2 million as of 2025). "Perfect" reached number ten in the US and 2× platinum status (updated to 3× Platinum as of 2025), while "Infinity" and the charity single "History" (also for Comic Relief) charted lower at numbers 54 and 65 on the Hot 100, respectively, with "History" earning BPI 2× Platinum. Following Liam Payne's death in October 2024, the band's singles saw a surge in streams, with over 62 million U.S. streams in the week after, re-entering various charts.[7][38][39][40][41]| Title | Release Date | Album | UK Peak | US Hot 100 Peak | Selected Certifications |

As featured artist
One Direction made limited appearances as featured artists during their active years from 2011 to 2015, primarily contributing vocals to high-profile charity singles organized by major UK campaigns. These collaborations underscored the band's involvement in philanthropic efforts, often alongside ensembles of prominent musicians, and helped raise significant funds for causes such as Ebola relief and children's welfare.[43] In November 2014, One Direction participated in Band Aid 30's recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", a reworking of the 1984 charity anthem to support Ebola relief efforts in West Africa. The group, consisting of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson (following Zayn Malik's departure earlier that year), delivered the song's opening lines: "It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid." The single, produced by Bob Geldof and featuring artists like Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, and Ellie Goulding, debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, selling over 312,000 copies in its first week and raising millions for humanitarian aid.[44][45][46] Earlier that year, in October 2014, One Direction joined a star-studded ensemble for BBC Music's cover of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," released as the official single for Children in Need. The track, arranged by Brian Wilson and featuring performers including Elton John, Kylie Minogue, and Pharrell Williams, aimed to benefit UK children's charities. One Direction provided backing vocals in the multi-artist arrangement, which peaked at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart after entering at number 20 following its digital release. The effort generated substantial donations through sales and broadcasts.[47][48]Promotional singles
One Direction released several promotional singles throughout their career, primarily to support charitable causes or to generate anticipation for upcoming albums and extended plays. These tracks were typically distributed digitally, often as iTunes or Apple Music exclusives, without a full commercial single push, and focused on building fan engagement rather than traditional radio or physical sales promotion. Unlike their lead singles, these releases emphasized thematic or seasonal tie-ins, such as charity events, and achieved varying chart success based on fan-driven downloads and streams. In 2015, as One Direction prepared their final studio album, Made in the A.M., they issued "Infinity" as a promotional single on September 22, coinciding with the album's official announcement and pre-order launch.[49] Written by Jamie Scott, John Ryan, and Julian Bunetta, the anthemic ballad was offered as a free digital download to incentivize pre-orders, peaking at number 36 on the UK Singles Chart with six weeks in the top 100.[50] Later that year, on October 21, "Home" served as another promotional release, bundled exclusively with the digital EP Perfect on iTunes and Apple Music.[51] Co-written by band members Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne alongside Jamie Scott, the introspective track charted briefly at number 96 on the UK Singles Chart, providing fans an additional preview of the mature sound on Made in the A.M..[52]| Title | Release Date | Purpose | UK Peak Position | Source |

Other charted and certified songs
Several non-single tracks from One Direction's studio albums achieved notable chart success in the UK through digital downloads and streaming following their respective album releases, demonstrating the band's strong fan-driven popularity beyond promoted singles. These album deep cuts often entered the Official Singles Chart organically, reflecting high individual track sales and plays. For instance, "Diana", the third track on their third studio album Midnight Memories (2013), debuted and peaked at No. 58 on the UK Singles Chart in December 2013, spending one week in the Top 100.[53] Another example is "You & I" from the same album, which reached No. 19 on the UK Singles Chart in late 2013, charting for 10 weeks before its later release as an official single in 2014.[7] Similarly, "Don't Forget Where You Belong", the opening track of Midnight Memories, peaked at No. 21 on the UK Singles Chart upon the album's release, holding the position for one week and highlighting early fan favorites from the record.[7] In the US, select album tracks also garnered chart attention via strong digital performance. "Diana" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 11 in December 2013, exiting the chart the following week due to robust pre-release buzz and iTunes exclusivity as a bonus track. Certifications for these non-single tracks are limited, but they underscore the enduring commercial impact of One Direction's catalog, with many accumulating equivalent units through streaming in subsequent years.[54]| Song | Album (Year) | UK Peak | US Peak (Hot 100) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diana | Midnight Memories (2013) | 58 | 11 | Bonus track on iTunes pre-order; one week on UK chart.[53] |
| You & I | Midnight Memories (2013) | 19 | N/A | Charted 10 weeks in UK pre-single release.[7] |
| Don't Forget Where You Belong | Midnight Memories (2013) | 21 | N/A | One week on UK chart.[7] |
Video releases
Music videos
One Direction released 17 official music videos from 2011 to 2016, primarily to promote their singles from albums such as Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, Four, and Made in the A.M., with additional videos for select tracks like "More Than This" and "Fireproof." These videos were directed by a core group of collaborators, including John Urbano, Vaughan Arnell, and Ben Winston, and were exclusively premiered on Vevo and the band's official YouTube channel, One Direction VEVO, which amassed billions of collective views. The concepts evolved from lighthearted, youthful escapades reflecting their early pop image to more reflective and cinematic narratives later in their career, often incorporating humor, romance, and personal storytelling to engage their global fanbase.[55][56][57] Early videos emphasized fun and accessibility, as seen in the debut single's beach-themed romp. "What Makes You Beautiful," directed by John Urbano and released in August 2011, shows the band driving along the California coast in a convertible, serenading a shy girl amid sunny shores and flirtatious chases, embodying their breakout boy-band appeal and achieving over 1.6 billion YouTube views.[58][59] The follow-up, "Gotta Be You" (November 2011, dir. John Urbano), adopts a quieter tone with the members traveling by car, train, and foot to a remote lakeside campsite for a romantic fireworks display with female companions, highlighting emotional intimacy.[57][59] As their style matured, videos incorporated more elaborate production and self-referential elements. "Story of My Life" (October 2013, dir. Ben Winston), for the Midnight Memories album, features the band members recreating childhood family photos in black-and-white vignettes, interspersed with personal snapshots to evoke nostalgia and growth, and has surpassed 1 billion YouTube views.[60][57] Later entries like "Drag Me Down" (July 2015, dir. Ben Turner, Gabe Turner), the first without Zayn Malik, was filmed at NASA's neutral buoyancy lab simulating zero-gravity environments, depicting the quartet in astronaut suits undergoing training exercises to symbolize resilience, and reached 1.1 billion views.[61][57] Some releases included lyric videos as companions, such as for "Night Changes" (November 2014, dir. Ben Winston), which uses a point-of-view perspective to show disastrous first dates for each member, blending comedy with relational mishaps.[62][56] The following table summarizes all official music videos, including release years, directors, key concepts, and notable view counts where they exceed 500 million on YouTube (as of November 2025):| Title | Release Year | Director(s) | Concept/Key Elements | YouTube Views (as of 2025) |

Concert films and documentaries
One Direction has released several official concert films and documentaries that capture their live performances and behind-the-scenes experiences during their peak touring years. These productions provide fans with immersive looks at the band's energy on stage and the personal dynamics off it, often tying into major world tours supporting their albums. The first major release, One Direction: This Is Us, directed by Morgan Spurlock, premiered on August 30, 2013. This 3D documentary-concert hybrid follows the band during their Take Me Home Tour in 2012-2013, blending high-energy live footage from London's O2 Arena with interviews and candid moments revealing the members' camaraderie and challenges of fame. Filmed over several months, it highlights their rapid ascent from The X Factor contestants to global stars, emphasizing themes of youth, pressure, and unity. The film was a commercial success, grossing $68.2 million worldwide against a modest budget, making it one of the highest-earning concert documentaries of its era.[63] Following the success of This Is Us, One Direction released Where We Are: The Concert Film on October 11, 2014 (initially in select markets like the UK). Capturing the band's Where We Are Tour—supporting their album Midnight Memories—the film features a full 23-song set from their June 28-29, 2014, shows at Milan's San Siro Stadium, attended by over 100,000 fans across two nights. Directed by Paul Dugdale, it includes bonus behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, showcasing the scale of their stadium performances with elaborate production elements like pyrotechnics and fan interactions. While primarily a straight concert capture, it underscores the tour's record-breaking status as one of the highest-grossing of the year at $290.2 million in ticket sales. The film was released theatrically in Europe and later on home video, extending the tour's reach to audiences unable to attend live. In addition to these theatrical releases, One Direction produced TV specials that documented key moments. For their final On the Road Again Tour in 2015, no full concert film was produced, but official behind-the-scenes clips and a promotional documentary-style video were shared via social media and YouTube, offering glimpses of the tour's global stops and the band's evolving dynamics amid Zayn Malik's departure. These shorter formats maintained fan engagement post-hiatus, with a notable 2020 10th anniversary tribute video compiling rare tour footage released on their official YouTube channel.[64]| Title | Release Date | Director | Format | Key Highlights |
