Early life
Birth and family
Peer Koopmeiners was born on 4 May 2000 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[6] He measures 1.86 meters in height and is right-footed.[6] Koopmeiners is the younger brother of Teun Koopmeiners, a Dutch international midfielder who plays for Juventus in Serie A.[6] The siblings share a close relationship, with Peer frequently commenting on Teun's career and expressing pride in his achievements, as seen in interviews where he discusses the pressures Teun faces at his club.[7]Youth development
Peer Koopmeiners began his football journey at Vitesse '22 in Castricum, a local club where he played until 2009.[1] At the age of nine, he joined the AZ Alkmaar youth academy in 2009, marking the start of his structured development within one of the Netherlands' premier youth systems.[8] Like his older brother Teun, who also progressed through AZ's youth ranks, Peer progressed methodically through AZ's youth ranks, honing his skills as a defensive midfielder.[8] During his time in the academy, Koopmeiners advanced from under-11 to under-19 levels, participating in competitive youth leagues such as the U17 Eredivisie and U19 Eredivisie, where AZ's teams achieved notable successes, such as a runners-up finish in the U17 league.[9] These experiences emphasized tactical discipline and ball-winning abilities central to his role, with training focused on AZ's possession-based philosophy that prioritizes technical proficiency from a young age.[8] By 2017, at age 17, he was a regular in the U19 squad, showcasing potential in midfield control during domestic youth competitions.[10] In early 2018, Koopmeiners transitioned to Jong AZ, AZ's reserve team competing in the Eerste Divisie, the Dutch second tier.[11] He made his professional debut on January 12, 2018, substituting in the 65th minute during a 1–0 away loss to RKC Waalwijk.[12] This step-up allowed him to bridge academy training with senior-level demands, further developing his defensive positioning and game-reading skills in competitive matches.[1]Club career
AZ Alkmaar academy and reserves
Peer Koopmeiners joined AZ Alkmaar's reserve team, Jong AZ, in 2018, competing in the Eerste Divisie, the Dutch second tier.[6] Over the following four seasons until 2022, he established himself as a key player, making 115 appearances and scoring 4 goals across all competitions.[13] His consistent involvement highlighted his growth within the academy system, where he transitioned from a promising youth prospect to a reliable performer in professional matches. Koopmeiners netted his first professional goal on 16 October 2020, during a 3–2 away defeat to Jong Ajax, marking a significant milestone in his reserve-level career.[14] He added to his tally with notable strikes, including a powerful free-kick on 1 February 2021 that contributed to Jong AZ's 3–2 home victory over FC Eindhoven.[15] Playing primarily as a defensive midfielder, Koopmeiners brought tactical discipline to the midfield, offering defensive cover while aiding in possession transitions and supporting team dynamics through his positioning and work rate.[6] His performances exemplified AZ's academy emphasis on developing versatile midfielders capable of competing at higher levels. On 23 June 2021, Koopmeiners was promoted to AZ's first-team squad alongside fellow Jong AZ talents Beau Reus, Maxim Gullit, and Jelle Duin, recognizing his readiness for senior football.[16] This move included initial integrations into first-team training sessions during the preseason, allowing him to adapt to the demands of Eredivisie-level preparation.[17]First-team breakthrough
Koopmeiners made his Eredivisie debut for AZ Alkmaar on 17 October 2021, coming on as a substitute in the 90th minute during a 5–1 home victory over FC Utrecht.[8] He replaced Jordy Clasie as a central midfielder and contributed to the team's dominant performance without recording a goal or assist in his brief appearance. In the 2021–2022 season, Koopmeiners made three appearances in the Eredivisie for AZ's first team, all as a substitute, totaling 72 minutes played with no goals or assists.[18] His limited involvement reflected a gradual integration following strong showings in the reserves, where he had established himself as a reliable defensive midfielder. The following 2022–2023 season marked a breakthrough, with 15 appearances across all competitions, including six Eredivisie substitute outings (100 minutes) and additional minutes in the KNVB Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League.[13][19] He recorded one assist in the league, providing a key pass in AZ's 4–1 away win over FC Groningen on 1 October 2022, which helped secure a comfortable victory and highlighted his growing utility in midfield transitions.[20] Koopmeiners' defensive contributions, such as interceptions and positional discipline, earned him recognition within the squad, though he remained behind established players like Sven Mijnans and Fredrik Midtsjø.[21] Despite his emergence, limited starting opportunities—stemming from intense competition in midfield—prompted AZ to loan him out in January 2023 to further his development through regular playing time.[8]Loan to Excelsior
In January 2023, following limited first-team opportunities at AZ Alkmaar earlier in the season, Peer Koopmeiners joined Excelsior on loan until the end of the 2022–23 campaign, with the agreement including an option for Excelsior to make the transfer permanent.[22][23] The move was motivated by Excelsior's reputation for developing young players, which appealed to Koopmeiners as a platform to gain consistent Eredivisie experience in a defensive midfield role.[22] Koopmeiners quickly integrated into Excelsior's squad, debuting in a 1–4 KNVB Beker loss to AZ on January 11, 2023, before making his league bow against FC Volendam four days later.[24] Over the half-season, he featured in 19 Eredivisie matches, starting 16 and accumulating 1,446 minutes without registering a goal or assist.[25] Operating primarily as a defensive midfielder (position 6 or 8), he focused on shielding the backline, recording 49 tackles (winning 27), 15 interceptions, 35 blocks, and 41 clearances—defensive outputs that underscored his role in maintaining midfield solidity during a challenging relegation battle.[25] His pass completion rate stood at 84%, reflecting reliable distribution under pressure.[24] The loan period marked a key developmental step for Koopmeiners, who adapted to the tactical demands of regular senior football by emphasizing positional discipline and recovery work in Excelsior's 4-2-3-1 setup, often partnering with players like Joshua Eijgenraam to disrupt opposition transitions.[22] These contributions helped bolster Excelsior's defensive resilience in the latter stages of the season, aiding their narrow escape from relegation as they finished 15th with 32 points.[26] Notable performances included a 4–1 home win over SC Cambuur on March 19, where he logged 90 minutes and contributed to a clean sheet in the second half through effective tackling.[27] Upon the loan's expiration on June 30, 2023, Koopmeiners returned to AZ Alkmaar without the buy option being activated, having gained valuable experience in high-stakes matches that enhanced his tactical awareness and physical readiness for top-flight demands.Loan to Almere City
In July 2023, Peer Koopmeiners joined Almere City on a season-long loan from AZ Alkmaar, running until 30 June 2024. This move came shortly after Almere City's promotion to the Eredivisie via the playoffs in May 2023, providing Koopmeiners with an opportunity to gain regular senior experience in the top flight as a defensive midfielder. During the 2023–24 Eredivisie campaign, Koopmeiners became a mainstay in Almere City's midfield, featuring in 31 league matches where he started every game and logged 2,771 minutes.[25] He recorded 9 assists without scoring any goals, demonstrating his playmaking capabilities from a deeper position, while also picking up 7 yellow cards and 1 red card over the season.[25] In the KNVB Beker, he made 3 appearances, further solidifying his consistent involvement. Koopmeiners' defensive work was particularly impactful, as he completed 115 tackles and 41 interceptions in the league, helping anchor Almere City's backline during a challenging debut season in the Eredivisie where they finished 13th and avoided relegation.[25] These contributions highlighted his versatility, blending robust tackling with progressive passing, and built on the minutes gained during his earlier loan to Excelsior.[13] The experience at Almere City proved instrumental in his development, enhancing his tactical awareness and readiness for a more prominent role upon returning to AZ Alkmaar.[28]Return to AZ Alkmaar
Koopmeiners returned to AZ Alkmaar following the expiration of his loan at Almere City on 30 June 2024. He signed a contract extension with the club on 27 July 2024, committing his future until June 2028.[1] In the 2024–25 Eredivisie season, Koopmeiners became a regular starter in AZ's midfield, making 34 appearances, starting 32, and accumulating 2,793 minutes. He scored his first goal for AZ's senior team and provided 7 assists, contributing significantly to the team's campaign.[25] As of November 2025, in the ongoing 2025–26 season, Koopmeiners has featured in 11 Eredivisie matches for AZ, logging 605 minutes without goals or assists, while receiving 2 yellow cards. His role remains pivotal in defensive midfield, supporting AZ's competitive efforts in the league and European competitions.[25]International career
Netherlands U16
Peer Koopmeiners began his international youth career with the Netherlands U16 team during the 2015–2016 period, earning a total of 7 caps without scoring any goals.[4] His debut came on 29 October 2015 in a friendly match against England U16. Koopmeiners featured in several other friendlies that season, including a 2:1 loss to the United States U17 on 4 December 2015, a 2:2 draw against England U16 on 6 December 2015, and a 2:0 victory over France U16 on 4 February 2016. Deployed primarily as a defensive midfielder, Koopmeiners contributed to the team's tactical setup by performing holding duties, which paralleled his development in the AZ Alkmaar youth system where he honed similar responsibilities. Selection for the U16 squad involved scouting from club academies and participation in national training camps to prepare for international fixtures.Netherlands U18 and U19
Koopmeiners' involvement with the Netherlands U18 team was limited, with no recorded caps or appearances at this level, marking a transitional phase in his youth international progression following his earlier U16 experience. He earned his first call-up to the Netherlands U19 squad during the 2018–2019 period, accumulating 6 caps without scoring any goals across a total of 219 minutes played, primarily as a defensive midfielder or central midfielder. These appearances highlighted his development in a more competitive environment, focusing on tactical discipline and defensive contributions in midfield during qualification campaigns and friendlies. His debut came on 5 September 2018 in an international friendly against England U19, where he played 85 minutes in a 1–4 defeat.[31] Subsequent matches included brief substitute roles in UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers. On 10 October 2018, he featured for 22 minutes against the Faroe Islands U19 in a 5–0 Group 10 win, followed by 21 minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina U19 three days later in a 6–0 triumph. Another friendly appearance came on 14 November 2018 versus Armenia U19, logging 78 minutes in a 4–0 victory for the Dutch. In the Elite Round qualifiers on 23 March 2019, he made a 1-minute cameo against Slovenia U19 in a 2–0 success, and his final U19 outing was a 12-minute substitute shift against Spain U19 on 26 March 2019, resulting in a 0–1 loss that ended the Netherlands' qualification hopes.[31] Koopmeiners' U19 tenure underscored his role in supporting the team's build-up play and defensive structure, though limited minutes reflected the depth of the squad and his emerging status. His last international appearance at this level in March 2019 preceded a focus on club development, with no further youth call-ups leading to senior team consideration at that stage.[31]Netherlands U15
Koopmeiners represented the Netherlands at U15 level during the 2014–2015 season, with call-ups to the squad but no recorded appearances.[32]Career statistics
