Prince Rupert, along with his brother Prince Maurice and a number of professional soldiers, landed in Newcastle to fight for the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Riding across country, he found the King with a tiny army at Leicester Abbey, and was promptly appointed General of Horse, a coveted appointment at the time in European warfare.
