Youth years in Estonia
Sander Raieste was born on March 31, 1999, in Tallinn, Estonia, where he grew up immersed in the local sports culture of the capital city.[1] His early exposure to basketball came through participation in youth programs in Tallinn, fostering a foundation in the sport amid Estonia's developing basketball scene.[9] Raieste's organized basketball journey began with local clubs Viimsi and Audentes, which provided initial training and competitive opportunities in Estonian youth circuits.[9] This led to his professional debut at age 15 with Audentese SG/Noortekoondis in the 2014–15 season of the Estonian KML youth league, where he appeared in six games, averaging 5.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest while shooting 38.5% from the field.[1][3] A notable highlight came on December 5, 2014, during an EMKL matchup, when he recorded a career-high seven assists, showcasing his emerging playmaking ability in domestic youth play.[9] In the subsequent 2015–16 season, Raieste solidified his role with Audentese SG/Noortekoondis, playing in 26 games and improving to averages of 7.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, with 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks, while maintaining a field goal percentage around 40%.[1] These performances in Estonian youth leagues highlighted his versatility as a small forward and growing potential. At age 17, Raieste opted to advance his development abroad by signing with Baskonia in Spain for the 2016–17 season, a decision that propelled him into a more competitive European environment.[3]Academy development in Spain
In 2016, at the age of 17, Sander Raieste relocated from Estonia to Spain, signing a five-year contract with the youth academy of Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz to further his basketball development.[10] Coming from the Estonian first division with Audentese SG, where he averaged 7.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game in 24 minutes across 26 appearances during the 2015-16 season, Raieste joined the club's junior categories through Fundación 5+11 for the 2016-17 campaign.[1] During the 2016-17 season, Raieste competed with Baskonia's junior team, gaining initial exposure to the structured Spanish youth system known for its emphasis on technical skills and tactical discipline.[3] He transitioned to the club's B-team, Fundación 5+11 (also referred to as Baskonia's second team), for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, where he played in the LEB Plata, Spain's third-tier professional league.[11] This step up from youth to semi-professional competition allowed him to adapt to higher physical demands and faster-paced games, contributing to his growth as a 2.04-meter small forward.[3][8] Raieste's time in the Baskonia academy focused on enhancing his athleticism and skill set, including perimeter shooting and defensive positioning, within one of Europe's premier developmental programs that has produced numerous professional talents.[12] The rigorous training environment and competitive leagues prepared him for the transition to senior-level basketball by building resilience and game IQ essential for professional play.[3]Professional career
Loan to BC Kalev/Cramo (2019–2020)
In August 2019, Sander Raieste joined BC Kalev/Cramo on a season-long loan from Baskonia, marking his debut in senior professional basketball back in his native Estonia.[13][1] The move provided the 20-year-old with an opportunity to gain consistent playing time in familiar surroundings, following his youth development in Spain. Raieste primarily served as a rotation small forward for BC Kalev/Cramo, contributing across the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LEBL) and the Baltic Basketball League (BBL), as well as select games in the VTB United League. In 44 total appearances during the 2019–20 campaign, he averaged 5.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game while logging 17.1 minutes on the court.[1] His production varied by competition: in the LEBL, he posted stronger numbers at 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, compared to 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in VTB United League outings, reflecting his growing comfort in domestic play.[9] These contributions helped solidify his role within the team's rotation, offering valuable experience in high-stakes matches. The loan period represented a key step in Raieste's adaptation to the physicality and demands of professional basketball, building on his academy background to enhance his defensive presence and perimeter shooting. However, the season faced significant disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, with BC Kalev/Cramo opting to end its campaign prematurely in March 2020 amid rising health concerns in Estonia, limiting further development opportunities.[14]Baskonia first team (2020–2025)
Following his loan spell in Estonia, Raieste returned to Baskonia's first team in August 2020, signing a contract extension that kept him with the club through the 2023–24 season.[15] Raieste made his EuroLeague debut during the 2020–21 season, appearing in 10 games while averaging 5.5 minutes and 0.7 points per contest as he adjusted to elite competition.[1] Over the following seasons, his playing time gradually increased, with him logging 6.2 minutes per game across 33 total appearances in all competitions during 2020–21, contributing modestly off the bench.[1] One of Raieste's standout performances came on March 8, 2022, when he scored a career-high 11 points and posted an index rating of 12 in a EuroLeague matchup.[16] In the Liga ACB playoffs, he delivered a strong showing in the 2025 quarterfinals opener against Real Madrid on June 3.[17] In June 2024, Raieste re-signed with Baskonia on a one-year extension, securing his spot through the 2024–25 season.[18] Throughout his tenure with the first team, he established himself as a defensive specialist and reliable bench contributor, providing energy and perimeter defense in limited rotations.[18]UCAM Murcia (2025–present)
On July 12, 2025, Sander Raieste signed a two-year contract with UCAM Murcia of the Liga ACB, marking a new chapter after five seasons with Baskonia, where he had developed into a versatile small forward.[19] The move was seen as an opportunity to leverage his prior experience in Spain's top league, bringing defensive tenacity and perimeter shooting to a team aiming to compete in both domestic and European competitions.[20] Raieste quickly integrated into UCAM Murcia's rotation under coach Sito Alonso, primarily as a small forward off the bench but occasionally starting in key matchups. His role emphasizes rebounding and transition play, drawing from his 6'8" frame to contribute on both ends. In the early 2025–26 season, he has averaged 23.8 minutes per game, showcasing adaptability in a system focused on balanced scoring.[4] Raieste made his debut for UCAM Murcia on October 5, 2025, against MoraBanc Andorra in Liga ACB Matchday 2, scoring a season-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding 7 rebounds and 2 assists in a 95–64 victory.[21] Through the first seven league games as of November 8, 2025, he has posted averages of 10.4 points, 6.4 rebounds (including 1.0 offensive), 1.3 assists, and 0.7 blocks per game, with efficient shooting at 67.9% on two-pointers and 40.9% from three-point range.[4][22] A standout performance came on November 2, 2025, in Matchday 5 against FC Barcelona, where he started and recorded 11 points (including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc) and a game-high 9 rebounds in 23 minutes during an 81–78 upset win.[23] In European play, Raieste has supported UCAM Murcia's campaign in the Basketball Champions League, appearing in qualifiers and early group stage games with contributions like 6 points and 10 rebounds against PGE Start Lublin on October 29, 2025.[22][4] His early impact has helped the team to a strong start in the league standings, though challenges include adjusting to a more prominent scoring role amid occasional turnover issues (1.3 per game). Expectations remain high for his development in the two-year deal, particularly in bolstering Murcia's frontcourt depth for both Liga ACB playoff contention and deeper BCL advancement.[22][4]International career
Youth national teams
Raieste represented Estonia at the 2014 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B, where the team secured a 9th-place finish out of 20 participants. As a key contributor on the roster, he appeared in all nine games, averaging 9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while showcasing defensive versatility as a small forward.[24] In the 2015 edition of the same tournament, Estonia advanced to 8th place. Raieste built on his prior experience, starting in eight contests and delivering improved output with 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and a 15.3 efficiency rating per game, highlighting his growth in offensive efficiency and court vision.[25] Raieste progressed to the Estonian U18 national team, engaging in extensive training camps and preparatory competitions to prepare for higher-level play. During the 2017 Baltic Sea Basketball Cup, a regional development tournament, he played 29 minutes in a crucial 69–68 win over Finland, recording 11 points and 5 rebounds to aid the team's undefeated run to the title.[26] His standout performances across these youth international events, including consistent scoring and rebounding contributions, elevated his profile among European scouts and directly facilitated his 2016 recruitment to Baskonia's youth academy in Spain, marking a pivotal step in his professional trajectory.Senior national team
Raieste made his debut for the Estonia senior national team on June 29, 2018, in a 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup European qualifier against Great Britain in Glasgow, where he played 22 minutes off the bench, scoring 5 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in a 74–65 loss.[27] Since then, he has become a regular contributor as a versatile small forward, providing athleticism on the wing, strong rebounding, and perimeter defense in qualifiers, friendlies, and major tournaments from 2018 to 2025.[8] Raieste represented Estonia at the FIBA EuroBasket 2022, averaging 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds over five games in Group C, including a standout 94–62 group-stage win over Great Britain that marked Estonia's first victory in the tournament and boosted their morale despite an overall 19th-place finish.[28][29] His rebounding presence helped Estonia secure key possessions in high-stakes matches during the qualifiers leading to that appearance.[30] In the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 qualifiers, Raieste played a pivotal role in Estonia's qualification campaign, highlighted by a dominant 84–65 victory over North Macedonia in February 2025 that clinched their spot in the finals.[31] At the tournament itself, he averaged 3.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.8 assists across five games, again contributing to Estonia's group-stage efforts and another 19th-place finish, while his defensive energy supported the team's upsets and competitive showings.[2] Overall, Raieste has accumulated at least 28 senior caps through major FIBA events by mid-2025, with career averages of 5.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in international competition, aiding Estonia's back-to-back EuroBasket qualifications—a significant milestone for the program that underscores his growing importance to the team's successes in European qualifiers and tournaments.[8]Career statistics
