Sandra Annenberg is a Brazilian journalist and television presenter known for her long and distinguished career at Rede Globo, where she has anchored flagship news programs and hosted documentary series since joining the network in 1991. She became the first woman to present a fixed daily segment on Jornal Nacional, debuting with the weather forecast that year and marking a significant milestone in Brazilian television journalism. Born on June 5, 1968, in São Paulo, Annenberg began her television career as a child actress in 1974, appearing in programs on TV Cultura and later in telenovelas and series across networks such as Bandeirantes, Globo, and SBT through the late 1980s and early 1990s. She fully transitioned to journalism in 1991, initially as the weather presenter on São Paulo Já and Jornal Nacional, before taking on co-hosting roles on Fantástico from 1993 to 1996, where she covered major events including the death of Ayrton Senna. Over the following decades she presented and edited editions of SPTV, Jornal da Globo, and Jornal Hoje—which she anchored for nearly two decades until 2019—and contributed to international reporting as London bureau coordinator from 2000 to 2003. Since October 2019, Annenberg has been the primary presenter of Globo Repórter, the network's long-running investigative and documentary program, where she explores social, educational, and cultural themes, often highlighting transformative initiatives and human stories across Brazil. She has also hosted special segments and podcasts on topics such as education, the future of society, and public health, while participating in major live coverage of events including Olympic Games, World Cups, papal elections, and national crises. Annenberg is married to journalist Ernesto Paglia, with whom she has one daughter.

Early life

Family background

Sandra Annenberg was born on June 5, 1968, in São Paulo, Brazil, on Avenida Paulista. She is the daughter of Alexandre Annenberg Neto, an electronic engineer, and Débora Takser, a long-time television producer at TV Cultura. Annenberg is the younger sister of Daniel Annenberg, who later became a politician. Her family is of Jewish descent, with her maternal side tracing to Polish Jewish roots and her paternal side to Russian-Ukrainian and Romanian Jewish ancestry. Her grandparents were Jewish refugees who fled Europe in the 1930s to escape Nazism, antisemitism, and the Holocaust, settling in Brazil. Growing up in this environment, Annenberg's early exposure to television came through her mother's career at TV Cultura, which contributed to her own first appearance on the medium in a teleteatro at age 6 in 1974.

Education

Sandra Annenberg attended the Escola de Arte Dramática (EAD) at the Escola de Comunicações e Artes of the University of São Paulo (USP), passing its highly competitive entrance exam but studying for less than one year without completing the course due to her concurrent work commitments. She later enrolled in the journalism program at Faculdades Integradas Alcântara Machado (FIAM) and graduated after completing the four-year course with full dedication.

Early career

Childhood television appearances

Sandra Annenberg began her television career at the age of six in 1974, debuting as a child actress in the teleteatro Peixes Bananas on TV Cultura, where she performed alongside Luís Gustavo as a birthday gift from her mother, Débora Takser, a producer at the channel. Following this initial role, she appeared in more than 50 television commercials. At age 14 in 1982, Annenberg transitioned to reporting, joining the youth-oriented program Crig-Rá on TV Gazeta, produced by Olhar Eletrônico, where she conducted street interviews on topics of interest to young audiences. The next year, at age 15, she became a presenter on Rede Bandeirantes for the sports program Show do Esporte, co-hosting with Luciano do Valle and Juarez Soares. In 1984, she hosted the children's program TV Criança on the same network. During the mid-1980s, Annenberg returned to TV Cultura to present the sports program Vitória, the classical music series Grandes Concertos, and MPB festivals. She also presented sports programs on Rede Record, including Esporte Shopping Show alongside Osmar Santos and Super Esporte. In 1985, she joined the cast of the live comedy program Bronco on Rede Bandeirantes, remaining for two years and performing alongside Ronald Golias, Renata Fronzi, and Nair Bello. Between the late 1980s and 1990, she took on small acting roles in telenovelas and miniseries, including Tarcísio & Glória (1988), Pacto de Sangue (1989), República (1989), and A, E, I, O... Urca (1990) on Rede Globo; Chapadão do Bugre (1988) on Bandeirantes; and Cortina de Vidro (1990) on SBT.

Pre-Globo presenting and reporting

Before joining Rede Globo in 1991, Sandra Annenberg returned to presenting after her acting work, hosting TV Franchising at Rede Record during 1990–1991. These roles in presenting and light reporting marked her shift toward full-time journalism ahead of her Globo debut.

Rede Globo career

Joining Globo and early roles (1991–1999)

Sandra Annenberg joined Rede Globo in 1991, marking the start of her prominent role in the network's journalism division. On June 17, 1991, she debuted as the weather presenter for the São Paulo local newscast São Paulo Já. Less than a month later, on July 8, 1991, she became the first woman to hold a fixed daily weather segment on Jornal Nacional, the network's main national newscast, pioneering female participation in that high-profile format. In April 1993, Annenberg moved to presenting the Sunday magazine program Fantástico, where she formed a team with Celso Freitas and Fátima Bernardes until 1996. Among her notable contributions during this period was anchoring a special edition dedicated to the death of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna in 1994, which left a lasting impression on viewers due to the emotional coverage. In 1996, she took on the role of presenter and executive editor for SPTV 1ª Edição in São Paulo, covering major events including the Atlanta Olympics that year. The following year, in 1997, she served as presenter and executive editor of Jornal da Globo in São Paulo. In 1998, Annenberg relocated to Rio de Janeiro to assume the same responsibilities as presenter and executive editor of Jornal Hoje, later returning to São Paulo in the role until October 1999, when she transitioned to a special reporter position.

International correspondent (2000–2003)

In 2000, Sandra Annenberg assumed the role of international correspondent and coordinator of Rede Globo's London bureau. In this position, she oversaw coverage for multiple programs including Bom Dia, Jornal da Globo, the sports division, Globo Repórter, and Fantástico, managing a limited team consisting of three reporters, two cameramen, two video editors, and two producers. Annenberg described the experience as a significant challenge that taught her the demands of 24-hour journalism, noting that she remained constantly connected via cellphone to coordinate between the bureau and Brazil. During her tenure, she reported on several major international events, including the crash of the French Concorde airplane in 2000, the Kursk submarine disaster in 2000, the fall of Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević in 2000, and the global repercussions of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York in 2001. As bureau coordinator, she focused on sourcing and disseminating content across Globo's various newscasts and magazines from the European base. She returned to Brazil in 2003 and transitioned to presenting Jornal Hoje alongside Carlos Nascimento.

Jornal Hoje and concurrent anchoring (2003–2019)

In 2003, following her tenure as international correspondent in London, Sandra Annenberg returned to Brazil and began anchoring Jornal Hoje alongside Carlos Nascimento. The following year, after Nascimento's departure from Globo, she formed a long-term partnership with Evaristo Costa, who became her co-anchor for much of the subsequent decade and a half. Annenberg served as the program's main presenter and executive editor until September 2019, when she presented her final newscast and bid an emotional farewell to the desk. Her prior international experience in London helped prepare her for anchoring major global events during this extended period. During these years, Annenberg also took on concurrent anchoring responsibilities. From 2005 to 2014, she served as presenter and chief editor of the morning newscast Globo Notícia. She anchored the Saturday morning Globo Cidadania block from 2012 to 2014. Additionally, she occasionally served as a relief presenter for Jornal Nacional from 2013 until she left the rotation in 2019. Annenberg anchored Jornal Hoje through numerous high-profile national and international events. She covered the election of Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, during which she made a widely noted verbal slip by translating his papal name as "Benedito" instead of "Bento" during the live announcement. In 2007, she presented from the Maracanã stadium following the women's football final at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, delivering an emotional broadcast. She anchored live from Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, the day after the Boate Kiss nightclub fire in January 2013. In March 2013, she led nearly two hours of coverage for the election of Pope Francis. Her reporting included the 2014 plane crash that killed presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, which earned Jornal Hoje (alongside Jornal Nacional) an International Emmy nomination in the News category in 2015, though the award went to CBC News for its Ebola coverage. She presented from various locations during FIFA World Cups, including South Africa in 2010 and Moscow in 2018, as well as from a glass studio in Rio's Olympic Park during the 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2019, she anchored coverage of several major tragedies, including the Brumadinho dam collapse in January, the fire at Flamengo's youth training center in February, the Suzano school shooting in March, and the plane crash that killed singer Gabriel Diniz in May. A widely circulated moment from her tenure occurred on October 31, 2011, when she reacted to three men interrupting a live report by correspondent Monalisa Perrone with the spontaneous exclamation "Que deselegante!", a phrase that quickly became an internet meme and viral catchphrase.

Later programs (2014–present)

In August 2014, Sandra Annenberg began presenting Como Será?, a Saturday morning program on Rede Globo dedicated to themes of education, citizenship, and sustainability, showcasing transformative experiences and examples of social collaboration. She hosted the show through weekly episodes until December 2019. In August and September 2019, Annenberg served as the sole presenter of Jornal Hoje for a brief period amid her transition to new formats. In October 2019, she became presenter of Globo Repórter, initially sharing duties with Glória Maria. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program adapted to remote recording from São Paulo, and her first post-restrictions report aired in December 2020 on the theme "o tempo". Annenberg has continued presenting Globo Repórter since then, covering diverse stories including cultural and social transformations. Outside her main anchoring roles, in 2025 she participated in season 5 of The Masked Singer Brasil as Carminha, finishing in 16th place.
