2023

[edit]

Matlock was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in the sixth round, 200th overall, of the 2023 NFL draft.[5] In his rookie year Matlock played in 12 games and recorded 14 total tackles.

2024

[edit]

Under new Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Matlock became a two-way player during the 2024 NFL offseason and began playing fullback on offense while continuing to play defensive end on defense. Roman had previously used a defensive end/fullback hybrid during his tenure as the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens with Ravens player Patrick Ricard. Matlock previously had experience as a two-way player at the collegiate level, where he occasionally played tight end in addition to his primary position of defensive end at Boise State.[6] In Matlock's first regular season game as a two-way player, he played 18 offensive snaps, 16 defensive snaps, and 14 special teams snaps in a 22-10 win against the Las Vegas Raiders during Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Season. Matlock recorded a tackle and his first career pass deflection the following week against the Carolina Panthers as the Chargers won 26-3. Matlock recorded his first career reception for seven yards in a Week 4 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs. In Week 8, Matlock recorded his first career sack against the New Orleans Saints, along with one tackle and one reception for nine yards in a 26-8 win for the Chargers.

He finished the 2024 season with 4 receptions on 5 targets for 28 yards and nine tackles, one sack, and one pass deflection. He played 362 snaps on offense, 137 snaps on defense, and 231 snaps on special teams during the 2024 season.

2025

[edit]

In Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans, Matlock scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard reception from Justin Herbert.[7]

Early life

Family background

Scott Matlock was born on June 28, 2000, in Homedale, Idaho, to biological parents Doug and Lisa Matlock.[1] His early childhood was marked by significant family tragedies; his father, Doug, died of testicular cancer when Matlock was nine years old in 2009, leaving the family in emotional and practical turmoil.[8] Four years later, in 2013, his mother, Lisa, passed away from heart disease when Matlock was thirteen, prompting his entry into Idaho's foster care system as he and his older brother Steven navigated life without parental support.[8] Following his mother's death, Matlock cycled through multiple foster homes over approximately four months before finding stability with Mike and Donna Marose, a couple from Wilder, Idaho, who eventually adopted him.[8] The Maroses provided the consistent family environment Matlock needed during his formative teenage years, offering emotional support and encouragement to pursue his interests despite the hardships of his past.[8] This adoptive family played a crucial role in fostering his resilience, helping him channel personal challenges into positive outlets while he adjusted to life in Homedale, near his new home.[9] In the wake of his losses, Matlock turned to multi-sport activities as a means of coping and building confidence, participating in basketball and golf during his early high school years alongside emerging interest in football.[9] These pursuits, supported by his adoptive parents, served as therapeutic escapes and helped instill discipline amid the instability of foster care transitions.[8]

High school career

Scott Matlock attended Homedale High School in Homedale, Idaho, graduating in 2018.[10] With the support of his adoptive family, who provided stability following the loss of his parents, Matlock focused on his athletic development as a multi-sport participant in football, basketball, and golf.[11] He lettered in all three sports, earning recognition as the 2018 Idaho Press Tribune Sports Inspirational Athlete of the Year for his perseverance and contributions.[12] In football, Matlock excelled as a versatile player, lining up at defensive end, defensive tackle, tight end, H-back, and all five offensive line positions during his high school tenure.[13] As a senior in the 2017 season, he amassed 57 total tackles, including 30 solo stops and 5 sacks, while adding 2 fumble recoveries, 330 receiving yards on 22 receptions, and 5 touchdowns on offense; these efforts ranked him seventh in Idaho for sacks that year.[14] A standout performance came in a 55-12 win over Vale on September 9, 2017, where he recorded 9 total tackles and 2 sacks.[14] Matlock's high school achievements drew early college recruitment interest, with scholarship offers from Boise State, the University of Idaho, Idaho State, and Weber State.[11] He committed to Boise State University, signing with the Broncos on May 25, 2018, and later became the first Homedale player to have his jersey retired by the school in July 2024, honoring his legacy as a "once-in-a-lifetime" athlete.[10][15]

College career

Boise State University

Scott Matlock enrolled at Boise State University in August 2018, following a standout high school career at Homedale High School in Idaho that prepared him for collegiate football. As a true freshman defensive lineman, he made his debut in two games that season, registering one tackle before transitioning to a redshirt status.[16][17] In 2019, competing as a redshirt freshman, Matlock appeared in 12 games, contributing two tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss while adapting to the defensive line rotation.[16] Matlock's role evolved rapidly from a rotational player to a full-time starter by his sophomore year in 2020, showcasing his presence primarily at defensive tackle.[16][18] In 2021, as a redshirt junior, Matlock started all 12 games, recording a career-high 41 tackles (29 solo), 8.5 tackles for loss, and a team- and conference-leading 7 sacks. He also added two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble, earning Second Team All-Mountain West honors as a defensive lineman. His versatility was highlighted by blocking a 41-yard field goal and catching a 3-yard touchdown pass in a 27-3 win over Utah State.[16][19][20][21] Across his five seasons at Boise State, he played in 46 games, accumulating 115 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks, establishing himself as a disruptive force on the defensive front. He caught two passes for two touchdowns over his career.[16] Representative contributions included a breakout 2020 campaign with 22 tackles and two sacks in seven starts, as well as a blocked field goal and a receiving touchdown against Utah State in 2021.[16][18] His on-field impact earned him All-Mountain West Honorable Mention honors in 2020, followed by Second Team All-Mountain West recognition as a defensive lineman in both 2021 and 2022.[22][23] Matlock also excelled academically, securing Academic All-Mountain West honors for the fall semesters of 2021 and 2022, and demonstrated leadership by serving as a game captain for the 2022 matchup against Oregon State.[4][4]

Senior season

In his senior season at Boise State in 2022, Scott Matlock established himself as a dominant force on the defensive line, starting all 13 games and recording 49 tackles, the highest total among the team's defensive linemen.[4] He also led the Broncos with seven quarterback hurries, contributing to 6.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, while adding one pass deflection.[16] These performances underscored his breakout year, building on his prior development into a versatile interior defender capable of disrupting both the run and pass games.[24] Matlock delivered several standout efforts against key opponents, including a critical disruption in the backfield during a 35-13 victory over San Diego State, where he flushed the quarterback into a sack by teammate George Tarlas.[25] He tied for the team lead with seven tackles in a hard-fought 19-14 win at Air Force, helping contain the Falcons' triple-option attack.[26] Additionally, in a 42-23 rout of Utah State, Matlock hauled in a 1-yard touchdown reception—his second career score—showcasing his unexpected offensive involvement in a trick play.[27] Matlock played a pivotal role in Boise State's postseason run, starting in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game loss to Fresno State and the team's appearance in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl, where the Broncos defeated SMU 35-32 to cap a 10-4 season.[4] His consistent pressure up front helped anchor a defense that limited opponents in key moments, contributing to the program's 24th straight bowl-eligible campaign.[28] Matlock's senior campaign generated significant pre-draft attention, earning him a spot on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list as a top defensive player candidate.[24] At Boise State's March 2023 pro day, he impressed NFL scouts from over 30 teams with a personal-best 29 bench press repetitions and a 4.81-second 40-yard dash, boosting his draft stock as a productive, athletic defensive tackle.[29]

Professional career

Draft and rookie year

Matlock was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the sixth round, 200th overall, of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Boise State University.[3] His draft stock was bolstered by a strong senior season at Boise State, where he recorded 49 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks, earning second-team All-Mountain West honors.[1] Despite not receiving an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, Matlock showcased his athleticism at Boise State's pro day in March 2023, measuring 6 feet 4 inches and 296 pounds while demonstrating a quick first step, 29 bench press repetitions, and a 4.81-second 40-yard dash.[29][30] Scouting reports highlighted his compact frame, good strength for stacking and shedding blockers, and high motor as traits that could translate to a rotational role in the NFL.[30] On May 12, 2023, Matlock signed his rookie contract with the Chargers, a four-year deal worth $4,012,292 that included a $172,292 signing bonus.[31] During training camp, he impressed coaches with his effort and versatility, exploding for a sack in a team drill against the second-team offense and earning reps across the defensive line.[32] In the preseason, Matlock recorded a sack in the opener against the Los Angeles Rams and a tackle for loss versus the Seattle Seahawks, helping him secure a spot on the 53-man roster as a depth piece.[33] As a rookie in the 2023 season, Matlock appeared in 12 games, logging limited snaps primarily on special teams (147 snaps) and in rotational defensive duty (23 snaps), where he tallied 15 total tackles, including 6 solo stops.[34] His contributions were modest but steady, focusing on run defense and occasional pass-rush opportunities without recording a sack or forced fumble.[1]

2024 season

In the 2024 NFL season, Scott Matlock significantly expanded his role with the Los Angeles Chargers, transitioning from a primarily special teams contributor in his rookie year to a versatile two-way player on both defense and offense. Under head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, Matlock's athleticism and adaptability aligned with the team's emphasis on multi-phase contributors, allowing him to line up as a defensive tackle in base packages while also serving as the starting fullback in run-heavy schemes.[35][13] Matlock appeared in all 17 games, logging career-high snap counts across all three phases: 362 offensive snaps (34% of team total), 137 defensive snaps (13%), and 231 special teams snaps (50%). On defense, he recorded 9 total tackles (3 solo, 6 assisted), 1 sack, and 1 pass deflection, often rotating in as a rotational defensive tackle to provide depth and rotational pressure in Minter's aggressive 3-4 alignment. Offensively, as fullback, he contributed 4 receptions on 5 targets for 28 yards, primarily blocking for running back J.K. Dobbins and aiding in short-yardage situations. His special teams work focused on coverage units, where his high snap volume helped the Chargers rank among the league's top units in kickoff and punt coverage efficiency.[1][36][37] Matlock's unique versatility earned him recognition as the NFL's only true two-way player that season, a rarity in the modern era, with Harbaugh praising his ability to play defensive line, fullback, and special teams without diminishing performance in any area. Despite the physical demands of his expanded workload, he maintained durability, playing every snap without missing time due to injury, which solidified his value on a Chargers defense that finished top-10 in points allowed.[13][37][35]

2025 season

In the 2025 NFL season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Scott Matlock served as a two-way player, lining up primarily as fullback on offense and defensive lineman on defense while contributing significantly on special teams. He appeared in all 16 games, logging 334 offensive snaps (31%), 18 defensive snaps (2%), and 153 special teams snaps (37%).[1][34] Matlock recorded 4 receptions for 12 yards and 1 receiving touchdown.[34][36] His touchdown came on a 2-yard catch during a Week 9 victory over the Tennessee Titans, providing a crucial score in the 27-20 win.[38][39] Matlock's positional flexibility remained a cornerstone of his role, encompassing duties at defensive tackle, fullback, and special teams coverage. In training camp, he emphasized the value of adaptability, stating it allowed him to maximize opportunities across multiple units and solidify his roster position.[40][41] This versatility, built on his 2024 experiences, enabled an expanded offensive presence in 2025.[42] Matlock faced minor setbacks, including an ankle injury that made him questionable for Week 6 and a personal matter that led to his absence against the Miami Dolphins, but he returned promptly to contribute to team successes.[43][44] His efforts in subsequent games, such as the Titans matchup, helped stabilize the Chargers' rotations during a stretch of four wins in five outings. Mid-season analytics projected Matlock on pace for approximately 4 receptions, a mark he achieved by season's end, indicating continued growth in offensive production.[45][46]

Personal life

Following the deaths of his parents, Matlock entered the foster care system in Idaho and was later adopted by Mike and Donna Marose of Wilder, Idaho.[6] Matlock embraces his Scottish ancestry, which is reflected in his red hair and Instagram handle @proudtobeamatlock. He is also an avid gamer.[6][47] Matlock is involved in supporting foster youth. In December 2024, he participated in the NFL's "My Cause, My Cleats" campaign to raise awareness for Idaho foster families.[48] On April 17, 2025, he returned to Boise for a Boise State Esports event, where he interacted with foster youth, shared his experiences, and participated in gaming sessions.[47]
