With over 20 years of performance experience, Sweeney operates the act as a full-time endeavor, performing several days a week while providing professional sound equipment and tailoring setlists to suit specific events. The Sweeney Rebellion typically features Sweeney on guitar and vocals, with occasional collaboration from bassist Kjell Ogden in an ongoing partnership. This setup allows for versatile performances adaptable to various venues and audiences, emphasizing acoustic authenticity across its repertoire.

Live performances and venues

Shawn Sweeney performs primarily as the leader of The Sweeney Rebellion, an acoustic act that appears at a diverse array of events ranging from intimate private gatherings to larger military and corporate functions. He has a particular focus on supporting military personnel through recurring performances for the USO in Dayton, Ohio, where he has entertained soldiers and their families, welcomed troops home, and played at deployment events. This work with the USO stands as one of his proudest accomplishments. On April 20, 2023, The Sweeney Rebellion, featuring Shawn Sweeney and Kjell Ogden, provided musical entertainment at the annual USO volunteer appreciation dinner held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Sweeney has also performed at corporate events, including the Dayton Ohio Nonprofit Awards for the second year. Additional venues and events include Crooner's Circus in September 2023, Twist Beer Garden, local block parties, and various private house parties such as one in Kentucky and an event celebrating a dog's third birthday where he kept close to 100 people entertained for nearly four hours. His sets range from 30 to 240 minutes in length, and he arrives one or two hours early to set up and get acquainted with the space. Sweeney provides his own professional sound equipment, cleans up after himself, leaves the venue as he found it, and remains open to song requests if he knows them while doing his best to accommodate special requests.
