Sneha Sreekumar is an Indian actress, television presenter, and classical dancer who works primarily in the Malayalam-language entertainment industry, appearing in films, serials, and stage productions.[1] She rose to prominence through her portrayal of the character Mandodari in the long-running family sitcom Marimayam (2012–2016), which showcased her comedic timing and on-screen chemistry with co-star S. P. Sreekumar, earning her widespread recognition on Malayalam television.[1][2] Sreekumar has since transitioned into cinema, taking on supporting roles in notable films including Rajamma @ Yahoo (2015), directed by Reghu Rama Varma, where she played a key family member; Velipadinte Pusthakam (2017), a sports drama by Lal Jose featuring Mohanlal; and Aravindante Athidhikal (2018), a comedy by Midhun Manuel Thomas.[3][4] Her filmography also includes horror-thriller Bhoothakaalam (2022) and family entertainer Panchayat Jetty (2024), highlighting her versatility across genres.[3][4] Beyond acting, Sreekumar is a trained classical dancer who began studying Kathakali at the age of five under the guidance of her mother and a guru, performing her debut arangetram later in life and continuing to practice the art form during challenging periods like the COVID-19 lockdown.[1] In her personal life, she married actor S. P. Sreekumar in a private ceremony at the Sree Poornathrayeesha Temple in Tripunithura on December 11, 2019, following a long-standing friendship developed during Marimayam; the couple welcomed a son, Kedar, in 2023. In 2025, her husband faced sexual assault allegations from a co-actor, which she has publicly denied.[5][2][6][7][8]

Early life and education

Family and childhood

Sneha Sreekumar was born on 9 May 1986 in Ernakulam, Kerala, India.[9] She grew up in a family settled in Kumbalam, a village in the Ernakulam district near Kochi. Her father, Sreekumar, worked as an officer in the Kerala Irrigation Department (also known as the Kerala Water Authority). Her mother, Girija Devi, was a primary school teacher who played a pivotal role in fostering an artistic inclination within the household. Sneha is the younger of two daughters, with an elder sister.[10] From an early age, Sreekumar was exposed to the performing arts through her family environment, particularly influenced by her mother's passion for traditional Kerala dance forms. Girija Devi had a strong desire to learn Kathakali during her youth but was prevented by the era's gender norms that restricted girls from such training. Determined to fulfill her own unachieved aspirations, she enrolled both daughters in Kathakali classes at the age of five, providing Sneha with her initial immersion in the art.[1] This familial encouragement extended to other classical styles, as Sneha began formal dance training in childhood, including Kathakali under Kalamandalam E. Vasudevan, Ottanthullal with Kalamandalam Prabhakaran, and Mohiniyattam from Nirmala Panicker. Such early influences from her mother's dedication shaped her lifelong commitment to dance and theatre.[11]

Academic pursuits

Sneha Sreekumar completed her schooling at St. Antony’s Higher Secondary School in Ernakulam, where she developed an early interest in the arts.[12] She pursued her undergraduate education at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam, earning a BA in Malayalam, which provided a strong foundation in language and literature essential to her work in Malayalam media.[12] Sreekumar advanced to postgraduate studies, obtaining an MA in Theatre Arts from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, during which she actively engaged in theatre productions that built her performance expertise.[13] She later completed an M.Phil in Performing Arts from Mahatma Gandhi University, deepening her scholarly understanding of artistic expression.[9] This academic trajectory, emphasizing both linguistic proficiency and practical performing arts training, profoundly influenced Sreekumar's career path by equipping her with the versatility needed for roles in theatre, television, and film, where she could integrate narrative depth with dynamic performance.[13]

Personal life

Marriages

Sneha Sreekumar's first marriage was to Diljith M. Das, a film art director, which took place in 2014. The union ended in divorce around 2017 by mutual consent, with the former couple maintaining a friendly relationship thereafter. No children were born from this marriage.[14][15] Sreekumar later entered her second marriage with actor S. P. Sreekumar on December 11, 2019, in a private ceremony at the Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple in Tripunithura, Kochi. The relationship originated from their on-screen partnership as leads Lolithan and Mandodari in the Malayalam television series Marimayam (2011–present), where they developed a close friendship that gradually evolved into romance over several years. This professional camaraderie was highlighted by the couple as the foundation of their enduring bond, with S. P. Sreekumar noting in interviews that their shared time on set fostered a deep mutual understanding. The couple welcomed their son, Kedar, in June 2023.[5][16][17][7]

Residence and interests

Sneha Sreekumar primarily resides in the Ernakulam district of Kochi, Kerala, while maintaining close ties to her family roots in Kumbalam, where she spent much of her early life in a modest home surrounded by greenery and a family pond.[10] This connection to Kumbalam reflects her ongoing attachment to the rural ambiance near Kochi, including periodic visits to the area with family. Beyond her professional engagements, Sreekumar nurtures a personal passion for classical dance forms such as Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and Kuchipudi, which she has practiced for over 15 years and plans to share through informal classes for children at home.[5] She also finds relaxation in gardening, cultivating plants and envisioning a dedicated garden space as a serene extension of her daily routine.[10] Following her 2019 marriage, Sreekumar has adeptly balanced her public career in acting and media with private family responsibilities, often integrating personal interests like dance into collaborative family-oriented projects while prioritizing supportive home life.[5] Her lifestyle underscores a harmonious blend of Kerala's cultural heritage and modern familial commitments.

Career

Dance and theatre

Sneha Sreekumar began her artistic journey with extensive training in classical dance forms, starting from childhood under the guidance of renowned gurus in Kerala. She specialized in traditional styles such as Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and Ottan Thullal, which honed her expressive movements and rhythmic precision, forming the bedrock of her performative skills.[13][18] Her formal education in theatre further deepened this foundation. Sreekumar pursued an MA in Theatre Studies at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady, where she actively participated in stage productions during her postgraduate years.[13] This program introduced her to dramatic techniques and ensemble acting, culminating in performances like Chayamukhi, in which she portrayed Hidimbi opposite Mohanlal. She later completed an M.Phil. in Performing Arts from Mahatma Gandhi University, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to theatre and dance that informed her early amateur works.[11][19] During her university tenure, Sreekumar's theatre debut marked a pivotal phase, blending her dance expertise with dramatic roles in key productions. She took on supporting yet memorable characters in Girish Karnad's Hayavadana, staged by Magic Theatre in 2011, where her portrayal of Kali and an old woman was praised for its comedic timing and vitality.[20] Similarly, in Taj Mahal, she performed as one of the protagonists, showcasing her ability to convey emotional depth in live settings. These university-era plays, including others like Play Boy and Chayamukhi, allowed her to refine her craft through collaborative amateur theatre, often drawing on Kerala's rich folk traditions.[21] By around 2011, Sreekumar transitioned from these student-led endeavors to more professional theatre opportunities, leveraging her honed acting skills from stage performances. This shift paved the way for her entry into television, where her theatre background enabled seamless adaptation to scripted roles.[13]

Television roles

Sneha Sreekumar debuted on Malayalam television in 2011 with the satirical sitcom Marimayam on Mazhavil Manorama, where she portrayed the character of Mandodari, a role that marked her entry into the industry and quickly garnered widespread recognition among Kerala audiences.[22] Her performance as the witty and relatable Mandodari, drawing from her theatre-honed acting skills, contributed to the show's appeal as a light-hearted commentary on everyday social issues.[23] Marimayam features an ensemble cast, including co-stars like Rachana Narayanankutty as Valsala, highlighting Sreekumar's ability to shine in collaborative dynamics that amplify the sitcom's humor and satire on topics such as corruption and gender roles.[24] The series, which has aired continuously for over 14 years as of 2025, stands as one of the longest-running programs in Malayalam television history, earning multiple Kerala State Television Awards for Best Comedy Programme, including its fourth in 2019 and fifth in 2020.[25][26] Its cultural impact in Kerala lies in blending relatable storytelling with social critique, influencing subsequent comedy formats on regional TV.[25] Sreekumar's on-screen partnership with S.P. Sreekumar, who played the character's husband Lolithan, evolved from professional camaraderie during Marimayam shoots into a personal relationship.[2] This real-life connection mirrored the couple's popular dynamic on the show, further endearing them to viewers and underscoring the serial's role in her career trajectory.[23]

Film roles

Sneha Sreekumar made her film debut in the 2013 Malayalam comedy-drama Vallatha Pahayan, directed by Niyas Bakker, where she portrayed the supporting role of Suhara, the wife of the character Shukkur.[27] The film, starring Manikandan Pattambi and Rachana Narayanankutty, revolves around a man's misadventures in a village setting, and Sreekumar's performance marked her initial foray into cinema following her television work.[27] In the same year, she appeared in the ensemble cast of Zachariayude Garbhinikal, directed by Aneesh Anwar, playing the role of Vasundhara, one of five women navigating unconventional pregnancies under the care of a gynecologist.[28] The film, which explores themes of societal norms and women's choices, featured prominent actors like Lal and Aju Varghese, highlighting Sreekumar's ability to contribute to character-driven narratives in an all-star setup.[29] Sreekumar's film career progressed with roles in subsequent years, including Rajamma @ Yahoo (2015), a family comedy directed by Ajay Vasudev, where she played Indu, a key family member; Velipadinte Pusthakam (2017), directed by Lal Jose, where she essayed Anumol, a professor in a story centered on a college principal's efforts to reform his institution.[30][31] Starring Mohanlal in the lead, the action-drama allowed her to leverage dramatic skills in an academic context.[30] She followed this with supporting parts in Aravindante Athidhikal (2018), a comedy-drama by Midhun Manuel Thomas, as Bindu, and Thanaha (2018), directed by Dhaneesh K. Nandan, portraying the wife of a drunkard in a family-oriented drama that addresses personal redemption and relationships.[32] Her filmography continued with the horror-thriller Bhoothakaalam (2022), directed by Rahul Sadasivan, in which she played the vice principal, showcasing her range in a psychological drama starring Revathy. Her most recent cinematic outing as of 2025 is Panchayath Jetty, a comedy released in July 2024, in which she played Prema, a humorous character alongside familiar faces from her television ensemble, including Rachana Narayanankutty.[33] Directed by Salim Hasan and Manikandan, the film depicts village antics and community issues, providing Sreekumar a platform for lighthearted performance.[33] Sreekumar's transition to films has often built on her dramatic prowess honed through television, with her popularity from serials like Marimayam facilitating opportunities in cinema.[13]

Hosting and other media

Sneha Sreekumar debuted as a television host with the comedy talk show Loudspeaker on Kairali TV in 2014, portraying the character Salperu Susheela, a vivacious gossip aficionado who commented on current events and societal quirks through satirical sketches.[34] The program, which aired until 2021, became a staple for its light-hearted humor and relatable content, running for over 1,100 episodes and attracting a wide audience in Kerala.[35] Her energetic hosting style in Loudspeaker highlighted her improvisational skills, complementing the scripted comedy from her serial roles and solidifying her as a versatile television personality.[36] Beyond Loudspeaker, Sreekumar has made notable guest appearances on other programs, contributing to her multifaceted media presence. In 2017, she joined actress Manju Sunichen as a guest on Rimi Tomy's celebrity chat show Onnum Onnum Moonnu on Mazhavil Manorama, sharing personal anecdotes that resonated with viewers.[37] These engagements allowed her to connect directly with audiences in unscripted formats, further enhancing her popularity as a relatable figure in Malayalam television. Following the conclusion of Loudspeaker in 2021, Sreekumar's media activities have included select guest spots on high-profile events. In November 2025, she shared the stage during the grand finale of Bigg Boss Malayalam 7, participating in comedic segments alongside other entertainers.[38] No major new hosting projects have been announced as of late 2025, though her occasional appearances continue to leverage her established rapport with television viewers.
