Sydney Chandler (born February 13, 1996) is an American actress recognized for her breakout roles in film and television, including Violet in Don't Worry Darling (2022) and Chrissie Hynde in the FX miniseries Pistol (2022).[1][2] The daughter of Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler, she has emerged as a rising talent in Hollywood, with notable appearances in the Apple TV+ series Sugar (2024) alongside Colin Farrell, a lead role as the synthetic human Wendy in the FX sci-fi horror series Alien: Earth (2025)—renewed for a second season in November 2025—and starring in the upcoming sci-fi film Anima (2025) with Takehiro Hira.[3][2][4] Born in Austin, Texas, Chandler grew up outside Hollywood due to her father's career, living in various locations including Chicago, Topanga, California, New Zealand during the filming of King Kong (2005), and Dripping Springs, Texas.[2][3] An avid horse enthusiast from age three and a self-described "oddball" who found solace in reading, she attended St. Edward's University in Austin, where she contributed to the school's literary journal as a content writer and editor.[5][3] Chandler began auditioning for roles before the COVID-19 pandemic, marking her professional debut as Eve in the Facebook Watch series SKAM Austin (2018–2019).[2] Her career gained momentum with her casting in Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling in October 2020, followed by her transformative performance as punk rock icon Chrissie Hynde in Danny Boyle's Pistol, for which she learned to sing and play guitar.[1][2] Chandler's role in Alien: Earth, created by Noah Hawley, represents a pivotal breakthrough, portraying a complex hybrid character in a prequel to the Alien franchise that explores human-synthetic dynamics amid xenomorph threats; the series premiered on August 12, 2025, to critical acclaim for her nuanced performance.[3][6]

Early life

Family background

Sydney Chandler was born on February 13, 1996, in Austin, Texas, making her 29 years old as of 2025.[7] Due to her father's acting career, the family led a nomadic lifestyle, living in various locations including Chicago, Topanga, California, New Zealand during the filming of King Kong (2005), and later Dripping Springs, Texas, where they settled on a family ranch. An avid horse enthusiast from age three, Chandler grew up surrounded by nature and animals in a creative household that encouraged artistic expression. She has described herself as an "oddball" who found solace in reading, often immersing herself in books about dragons or the history of religion.[3][8] Her father, Kyle Chandler, is an Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles as Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights and John Rayburn in Bloodline, for which he received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2016.[9] Her mother, Kathryn Chandler (née Macquarrie), is an actress with credits including a role in The Willies (1990).[10] The family's involvement in the entertainment industry provided Chandler with early exposure to film sets during her father's productions, shaping her interest in performing arts from a young age.[8] Chandler has one younger sister, Sawyer Chandler, six years her junior, with whom she shares a close sibling bond; the family maintained a grounded lifestyle away from Hollywood's spotlight despite their professional ties to the industry.[11][3]

Education

Chandler was born in Austin, Texas, but raised in various locations, attending multiple high schools due to her family's frequent moves. During her high school years, she developed an early interest in storytelling and creative pursuits, initially aspiring to veterinary science but shifting focus after academic challenges in that area, laying the foundation for her later academic pursuits.[5][8] Following high school, Chandler enrolled at St. Edward's University in Austin, majoring in writing and rhetoric. She graduated in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in the field, which emphasized creative writing and narrative development, and contributed to the school's literary journal as a content writer and editor. This education honed her skills in character construction and script analysis, influencing her transition to acting.[12][13][14] Chandler did not pursue formal acting training through structured programs or conservatories. Instead, her entry into performance came organically during her university years when she enrolled in an acting class in Austin, initially to observe performers and enhance her writing by understanding character embodiment. This experience ignited her passion for acting, leading her to forgo additional academic credentials in the arts in favor of professional opportunities in Los Angeles after graduation. She supplemented her learning through informal means, including insights gained from her parents' careers in entertainment—her father, actor Kyle Chandler, and mother, actress Kathryn Chandler—such as reading scripts and witnessing industry practices firsthand, rather than relying on traditional pedagogical methods.[15][8][3]

Career

Early roles (2016–2019)

Sydney Chandler made her on-screen debut in 2016, appearing in a minor supporting role as Jade, a coffee shop actress, in the independent comedy short film The Golden Rut.[16] This low-budget project marked her entry into acting, following her discovery of the craft during a college class at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, where she was studying creative writing.[11] In 2018, Chandler landed her first television role as Eve Olsen, a recurring character, in the Facebook Watch teen drama series SKAM Austin, appearing in seven episodes through 2019.[17] The series, an American adaptation of the Norwegian format, offered her initial exposure in the streaming landscape, portraying a complex supporting figure in a narrative focused on high school dynamics and social issues.[18] Transitioning from university to professional acting in Los Angeles proved challenging for the shy aspiring performer, who navigated numerous auditions and small gigs while building experience in independent projects.[3] As the daughter of actor Kyle Chandler, she drew on familial industry insights to secure early opportunities, though recognition remained limited during this foundational phase, with her work confined to modest indie films and web series.[19]

Breakthrough and rise (2020–2022)

Chandler's transition to more prominent roles began in 2020 when she was cast in a supporting part as Violet in Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, marking her feature film debut alongside stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.[20] The film, which explores themes of conformity and control in a utopian community, was released in September 2022 to mixed reviews but highlighted Chandler's ability to contribute to an ensemble-driven narrative.[21] In early 2021, Chandler landed her first lead television role as Chrissie Hynde, the future frontwoman of The Pretenders, in the FX miniseries Pistol, directed by Danny Boyle and chronicling the rise of the Sex Pistols.[22] To prepare, she learned to play guitar and sing, drawing on consultations with the real Hynde for authenticity in portraying the musician's early struggles in London's punk scene.[23] The series premiered in May 2022, earning praise for Chandler's performance, with critics noting her as a standout in capturing Hynde's resilience and charisma amid the band's chaos.[24] These back-to-back high-profile projects in 2022 solidified Chandler's status as a rising talent, generating buzz through festival appearances, interviews, and industry recognition for her versatile portrayals in both film and television.[25] Her work in Pistol was particularly cited as a breakout moment, showcasing her command of period drama and musical elements, while Don't Worry Darling exposed her to a broader audience via its theatrical release.[26] This period marked a significant acceleration in her career, building on her earlier independent experiences to establish her in mainstream Hollywood.

Recent work (2023–present)

In 2023, Chandler's career gained further momentum when she was cast in the lead role of Wendy, a young woman hosting the consciousness of a dying child in an android body, for Noah Hawley's anticipated FX on Hulu series Alien: Earth, a prequel set in the Alien franchise.[27] This casting marked her transition into high-profile sci-fi television, building on her rising visibility from earlier breakthrough projects. Filming for the series, which began in Thailand, wrapped in July 2024, and it premiered on August 12, 2025, to critical acclaim for Chandler's portrayal of a character grappling with identity and survival amid xenomorph threats. In November 2025, the series was renewed for a second season.[28] Chandler made her supporting turn as Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a troubled Hollywood producer, in the 2024 Apple TV+ neo-noir mystery series Sugar, starring opposite Colin Farrell as a private investigator unraveling family secrets in Los Angeles.[29] Directed by Fernando Meirelles, the eight-episode series highlighted her ability to convey quiet intensity in a genre-blending narrative that twists classic detective tropes with supernatural elements, earning praise for its atmospheric tension.[25] Expanding into independent cinema, Chandler took on a lead role in the 2025 sci-fi road-trip dramedy Anima, directed by Brian Tetsuro Ivie, alongside Takehiro Hira as a reclusive older man on a cross-country journey to preserve his consciousness at an experimental facility.[4] Production began in mid-2025, representing her venture into smaller-scale projects that allow greater creative involvement, as she discussed in interviews balancing high-concept blockbusters with intimate storytelling.[30] This role underscores her ongoing diversification, with Anima slated for release later in 2025, further solidifying her presence in both prestige streaming and indie film spaces.[31]
