Key Information
History
[edit]Anastasia and Maxamillion Haunt began performing locally, writing and releasing music around the time Anastasia was 12 years old.[2] Singer and guitarist Maxamillion Haunt co-produced their debut EP alongside producer and musician Josh Diaz.[3] The band begun releasing the EP with the first single "All Went Black" which talked personally about Anastasia's history with bullying and how she found strength through music.[4] The song was critically acclaimed, allowing the band to release three more singles, leading up to the debut of the record.[1] After the release, The Haunt opened for fashion-rock band Palaye Royale, providing support on concerts in the United States, Canada, and Europe.[5]
After returning from tour, The Haunt recorded two singles to be released independent of a studio album; "Why Are You So Cold?"[6] and "Cigarettes & Feelings"[7] The band then proceeded to record a new EP, the Social Intercourse EP[citation needed] with From First to Last guitarist/producer, Matt Good. All the songs on the EP, except "Permanent", were released as singles. One of the singles, "Twisted Dream", saw its video directed by Darren Stein, known for his work on Jawbreaker, and G.B.F.[8] In 2021 The Haunt supported The Hu on two tours of North America.
In 2023, The Haunt released their new EP, Dead on Arrival, produced by Kevin Gruft. York Calling described the release as a charismatic and emotional collection that balanced "rock undertones" with mainstream accessibility.[9]
The following year, the duo released their fourth EP, Do Not Resuscitate. Jo Cosgrove of Distorted Sound praised the record's high production standards and "soulful and seething lyrics," noting the harmony between the siblings as a standout element in contemporary music.[10]

Opening and early years (2011–2018)
The Haunt opened on 3 February 2011 in a former cinema building at 10 Pool Valley, opposite Brighton Pier, previously known as the Cuckoo Club (and earlier as Kuku, Koo Klub, and Rio Rocks since 2000). The venue was launched by the Become Modern team, a Brighton-based promoter established in 2006 to address a lack of innovative club nights in the city. The opening party featured DJ sets from Romy Madley Croft of The xx, Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules & Love Affair, and live performances by Is Tropical and Mirrors.[5][6] The building itself has a longer history as an entertainment space: originally the White Horse Hotel in the 18th century, it became Brills Baths (a swimming pool) from 1869 to 1929, then the Savoy Cinema opening in 1930. It was renamed ABC Cinema in 1963, briefly operated as Cannon and Virgin in the mid-1990s, and closed as a cinema in 1999 before transitioning to nightclub use.[7] During its early years, The Haunt established itself as a key venue for live music and club nights, with a capacity of around 350. It hosted emerging and international artists across genres like indie, electronic, and alternative, including early shows by acts such as Haim (2012) and Fontaines D.C. (2019). Regular events included the long-running "Secret Discotheque" and "It Is Still 1985," themed 1980s parties that drew consistent crowds. The venue's state-of-the-art sound system and layout—featuring a main room with raised stage, mezzanine, balcony, and two bars—enhanced its reputation in Brighton's nightlife scene.[8][9] In 2018, the venue faced challenges when Grosvenor Casino's expansion plans revealed that The Haunt had operated without formal planning permission for nightclub use for nearly 20 years, despite a 1999 approval limited to restaurant and cafe bar functions. Residents raised noise complaints, but the venue applied for a Lawful Development Certificate, claiming over 10 years of continuous use. No immediate closure occurred, allowing operations to continue into 2019.[6]Closure and relocation (2019)
The Haunt closed its original location on 31 August 2019 after eight years, prompted by the landlord's decision to redevelop the site for Grosvenor Casino's expansion. Initial rumors of permanent closure were dispelled when the venue announced a relocation to the adjacent Savoy Centre at 13 Pool Valley, the former ABC Cinema building. The move doubled the capacity to approximately 750 and expanded the layout to five floors, including additional stages, lounges, and bars.[10][11][12] The venue reopened on 19 September 2019 under the new name CHALK, reflecting its larger scale while preserving the independent music focus. The relaunch featured the return of "Secret Discotheque," maintaining continuity with the original programming. The rebranding and relocation were approved with a premises licence for operations from noon to 11 p.m., though concerns from nearby residents about potential noise persisted.[13][14]Recent years (2019–present)
Since reopening as CHALK, the venue has continued to host a diverse range of live music and club events, building on The Haunt's legacy as a hub for new music discovery in Brighton. It has featured acts across indie, pop, electronic, and alternative genres, similar to its predecessor, and maintained popular nights like "It Is Still 1985." The expanded facilities have allowed for larger productions, contributing to Brighton's reputation in the UK's music scene.[15][16] As of November 2025, CHALK remains operational under the same management team, thriving as a multi-purpose venue despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily impacted live events in 2020–2021. No major changes or closures have been reported, solidifying its role in the city's nightlife.[7]Band members
Current members
The Haunt's current lineup consists of the sibling duo Anastasia Grace Haunt and Maxamillion Haunt, who have formed the core of the band since its inception in 2015 as a family project originating from South Florida.[17][18] Anastasia Grace Haunt serves as the lead vocalist, a role she has held since the band's formation, where her songwriting contributions emphasize introspective lyrics exploring themes of anxiety, depression, and resilience, notably shaping tracks on the 2025 debut album New Addiction. Her vocal style blends harmonic melodies with screamo elements, creating a dynamic range that alternates between ethereal vulnerability and intense emotional delivery, which has become a signature of the band's alternative rock sound.[19][20][2] Maxamillion Haunt, Anastasia's brother, handles guitar and backing vocals since 2015, complementing her leads with alternative rock riffs that drive the band's energetic rhythm sections and add layers of texture through effects-laden solos. He also played a key role in production for the band's early EPs, such as the self-titled 2017 release, co-producing alongside Josh Diaz to craft a polished yet raw debut sound. In live performances, the siblings' dynamic shines through their seamless interplay, with Maxamillion often engaging audiences while Anastasia focuses on captivating stage presence. As of 2025, Maxamillion also performs bass duties on tour.[21][22][2] The band tours as a quartet, with Joey Castro on drums since 2025.[23]Former members
Sage Duvall served as the band's drummer from its formation in 2015 until 2019, contributing significantly to the recording of their debut EP The Haunt and supporting early live tours that helped establish their presence in the South Florida music scene.[24][25] Steph Pino joined as bassist in 2015 alongside the founding siblings and remained until 2020, playing a pivotal role in defining the group's initial rock sound on early singles including "All Went Black," which marked their 2017 debut.[24][25] Rob Kingsley came on board as guitarist in 2018 and left in 2021, providing key contributions to the production of the 2021 EP Social Intercourse, which featured tracks blending alternative rock with introspective themes.[24][26] Felipe Silva took over on bass in 2020 and departed in 2023, offering essential support during The Haunt's 2022 tour dates opening for Palaye Royale, including shows across North America that expanded their audience.[24][27] Nick Lewert handled drums from 2021 to 2024, bringing production expertise and participating in video shoots for singles like "Twisted Dream" from the Social Intercourse era, enhancing the band's visual storytelling in 2020.[28][29] Nat Smallish provided bass and backing vocals starting in 2019 until her exit in 2024, adding atmospheric layers to tracks such as "Wish You Stayed" on the Social Intercourse EP and enriching the band's live performances during their rising popularity.[30][31][20]Musical style and influences
Genre classifications
The Haunt is primarily classified as an alternative rock band, drawing roots from post-punk revival and gothic rock traditions.[1][32] Their sound features driving rhythms and atmospheric textures reminiscent of post-punk, while incorporating gothic elements through themes of dark romanticism and disaffected beauty.[1] Critics have noted this foundation in early releases, where the band's raw energy aligned with revivalist aesthetics.[33] The band incorporates screamo and emo elements, particularly in vocals and instrumentation, which add emotional intensity and raw expression to their tracks. This is evident in singles like "Bad Omen," where screamo parallels enhance harmonic vocal layers, creating a dynamic contrast that amplifies themes of melancholy and unapologetic vulnerability.[20] These influences shine in live performances, blending aggressive delivery with melodic introspection to evoke emo's confessional style.[20][33] Over time, The Haunt's style has evolved from the straightforward rock of their early EPs—characterized by direct riffs and punk-infused energy—to more layered production in 2024–2025 releases. Recent works feature harmonic vocals over distorted guitars, with added electronic textures and deeper sonic depth, as heard in the EP Do Not Resuscitate and album New Addiction.[33][34] This progression reflects a maturation in blending retro rock elements with modern polish.[34] Critical reception in 2024 often labels their sound as "gothic rock with screamo parallels," highlighting the interplay of disaffected beauty and melancholy themes that define their emotional core.[20] Reviews praise this fusion for its therapeutic euphoria amid dysfunction, setting them apart in the alternative scene.[34] While sharing touring circuits with peers like Palaye Royale, The Haunt distinguishes itself through the unique sibling vocal interplay between Anastasia Grace Haunt and Max Haunt, which infuses their music with intimate, layered harmonies.[35][36] This dynamic adds a personal edge to their gothic-tinged alternative rock, differentiating them from similar acts in shared rock circuits.[20]Influences and evolution
The Haunt's musical influences draw heavily from a blend of classic and contemporary rock, as well as soulful and alternative artists, shaped by the siblings' upbringing in a musically diverse household. Anastasia Haunt has cited vocal inspirations including Amy Winehouse, Florence Welch, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday, incorporating their emotive phrasing into her performances, while Max Haunt points to garage rock and blues influences like The White Stripes and Jack White for the band's raw energy.[37][38] The duo also acknowledges early exposure to 90s hip-hop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Led Zeppelin from their parents, alongside modern acts such as My Chemical Romance, Bring Me the Horizon, Panic! at the Disco, and post-punk revival bands like Royal Blood, which contribute to the thematic depth of vulnerability and rebellion in their lyrics.[39][38] Additionally, gothic elements from Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees subtly inform their atmospheric sound, evoking a sense of dark introspection.[38] The band's sound has evolved significantly since their formation in 2015 as AnastasiaMax, transitioning from folk-indie roots to a more aggressive alternative rock style. Initially influenced by artists like The Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men, their early work featured acoustic-driven songs with piano and guitar, focusing on intimate, vocally centered arrangements.[38] By 2018, after renaming to The Haunt and adding a drummer, they incorporated punk and 60s pop elements inspired by Pixies and The Kills, resulting in grittier live performances and a shift toward raw rock energy.[38] This progression continued into the 2021 EPs, where electronic and industrial textures began emerging, and culminated in the 2024–2025 era with the debut album New Addiction, which fuses metal riffs, alternative grit, and heavier dynamics, including screamo-infused gothic layers for a more visceral intensity.[17][39] Songwriting remains a deeply collaborative process between the siblings, rooted in personal experiences and evolving themes from youthful struggles to adult complexities. Early material often addressed bullying and outsider status, creating anthems for the marginalized, while recent works explore addiction, depression, anxiety, and toxic relationships, drawing from real-life narratives for authenticity.[37][40] Anastasia typically crafts lyrics and initial chords over extended periods, infusing emotional depth, whereas Max generates guitar arrangements and multiple demos rapidly, adapting them for the full band setup to enhance their live impact.[38] This sibling dynamic ensures a balanced vision, with Max often refining the instrumental framework to support Anastasia's vocal leads. Notable collaborations have further shaped The Haunt's heavier vocal and visual aesthetics. In 2024, Craig Mabbitt of Escape the Fate guest-featured on "Masochistic Lovers," introducing layered, aggressive vocal styles that amplified the track's exploration of emotional turmoil and influenced the band's push toward metal-infused alternative rock.[41] Earlier, director Darren Stein—known for films like Jawbreaker—helmed the 2020 video for "Twisted Dream," infusing their visuals with a campy, gothic-noir flair that has since defined their aesthetic of dark glamour and theatrical rebellion.[42] In 2025 interviews, the duo expressed intentions to delve deeper into darker romanticism for upcoming material, building on New Addiction's themes of pain and connection while experimenting with new producers and international festival appearances to expand their sound.[40][39]Discography
Studio albums
The Haunt's debut studio album, All Went Black (2017–2020), functions as a compilation-style release gathering 8 tracks from the band's formative years, emphasizing themes of darkness and resilience through introspective lyrics and raw alternative rock arrangements. Released via an independent label, the album prioritized accessibility on streaming platforms, allowing early fans to access previously scattered singles in a cohesive format.[43] Following their initial output, Wish You Stayed (2020–2022) emerged as an 8-track compilation of singles, marking a step forward with professional mixing and enhanced production that polished the band's signature blend of emotional depth and energetic riffs. This release gained traction by entering alternative playlists on major streaming services, broadening their audience amid the evolving indie rock scene. In 2025, The Haunt delivered their first proper studio album, New Addiction, comprising 10 tracks recorded across multiple studios to capture a dynamic range of sounds. The project features a strategic lead single rollout and delves thematically into obsession, portraying personal turmoil through haunting melodies and collaborative elements, such as features with established artists. Produced by Kevin Thrasher and released via Nettwerk, it represents a milestone in the band's maturation.[44][19]Extended plays
The Haunt's extended plays represent pivotal experimental phases in the band's evolution, bridging their raw indie rock origins with more polished, thematic explorations of personal and relational turmoil. These EPs, often self-released or digitally distributed initially, allowed the sibling duo of Anastasia Grace Haunt and Maxamillion Haunt to test sonic boundaries while building a dedicated fanbase through streaming platforms and limited physical runs. The band's debut EP, The Haunt (2018), marked their emergence as a South Florida-based alternative rock outfit with a garage-infused edge, self-produced to capture unfiltered intensity and distributed locally via a limited vinyl pressing of 100 copies alongside digital formats. Released on May 11, 2018, through Wax Romantix Records, the six-track effort emphasized raw energy through gritty guitar riffs and bluesy undertones, drawing from influences like The Kills and Royal Blood to explore themes of rebellion and escape.
