House of Payne

The Paynes is an American television sitcom that premiered on January 16, 2018, on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The show was created, written, and directed by Tyler Perry and serves as a sequel to his previous series, Tyler Perry's House of Payne.

Though the show was not renewed for a second season, a revival of the original series premiered in 2020 on BET.[1][2]

Plot

[edit]

The series begins in Sun Coast, Florida, where Curtis and Ella Payne come to attend the funeral of Curtis' Uncle Robert. Their trip takes an unexpected turn when Ella and Curtis get roped into a real estate deal, landing them in a new community with a new church and unfamiliar family members. The family land straight back into the issues they find in their everyday lives. As life lessons abound, Ella finds a new business, a new home, and a new purpose.[citation needed] On House of Payne, Season 7, Episode 14 "Been A Long Time", this series is officially retconned out of existence as it is revealed that it was all a dream that Curtis had.

Connection to House of Payne

The Paynes functions as a spin-off and sequel to , centering on Curtis and Ella Payne (portrayed by and ) in their post-retirement life after leaving for , where they acquire and operate a laundromat business. This narrative directly extends the original series' storyline, reusing key characters and the same actors to preserve established family relationships and dynamics in a fresh environment focused on the couple's independent adventures. The production of The Paynes shares significant overlap with House of Payne, as both are fully created, written, directed, and executive produced by through , facilitating seamless cast returns and integrated storytelling within Perry's broader television universe. However, the spin-off's events were effectively retconned in the 2020 BET revival of House of Payne, which resumes the timeline five years after the original series' 2012 finale—bypassing the Florida relocation and laundromat premise to reposition the family in , treating the interim narrative as non-canonical, specifically as a dream Curtis had. This adjustment has sparked ongoing fan interest in the shared universe's continuity and possibilities for future crossovers, while the spin-off's success contributed to the momentum for reviving House of Payne on in 2020, which has continued airing new seasons through 2025, reuniting much of the original ensemble including Davis and Davis.
