Zeus Network is a permissionless multi-chain interoperability layer built on the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) that facilitates direct communication and asset transfers between the Bitcoin and Solana blockchains using BitcoinKit (launched in September 2025), enabling Bitcoin integration and DeFi on Solana via zBTC, a 1:1 pegged token representing locked native BTC, thereby providing programmable Bitcoin liquidity for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications without relying on wrapped tokens. As of early 2026, approximately 212 zBTC have been minted (circulating supply), corresponding to a TVL of about $16.42 million.[1][2][3][4][5]
Founded in 2023 by serial entrepreneur Justin Wang as CEO, Jim Chiu as CTO, and Dean Little as Chief Scientist, Zeus Network emerged from the need to bridge the liquidity and functionality gaps between Bitcoin's security and Solana's high-performance infrastructure.[6][7] The project quickly garnered support from prominent figures in the blockchain space, including Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, Mechanism Capital founder Andrew Kang, and Stacks co-founder Muneeb Ali, raising $8 million in seed funding to accelerate development.[8] It officially launched its mainnet in December 2024, introducing innovative tools like Zeus Nodes for validation and the Zeus Program Library (ZPL) for cross-chain programming.[9]
At its core, Zeus Network operates as a Layer 1.5 solution, allowing Bitcoin holders to lock BTC on the Bitcoin network and receive equivalent zBTC on Solana for use in DeFi, gaming, and other applications, while maintaining the original BTC's security through permissionless validation mechanisms.[3][4] This interoperability extends beyond Bitcoin to other ecosystems, positioning Zeus as a foundational infrastructure for multi-chain DeFi growth on Solana.[1] The network's native token, ZEUS, powers governance, staking, and transaction fees, with its distribution and utility designed to incentivize participation across the bridged ecosystems.[10]
