Alfred Matt is an Austrian former alpine skier known for winning the slalom discipline in the 1968-69 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and earning a bronze medal in the slalom at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. He achieved his peak performance in the slalom during the late 1960s, securing two World Cup slalom victories (Berchtesgaden on 3 January 1969 and Mont Sainte-Anne on 16 March 1969) and establishing himself as one of the top specialists in the discipline at that time. Matt also represented Austria at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, where he placed 14th in slalom, continuing his competitive career into the early 1970s before retiring from amateur racing in 1973 due to injury. His Olympic bronze remains his most prominent achievement, highlighting his skill in technical alpine events during a competitive era of the sport.

Early life

Birth and background

Alfred Matt was born on May 11, 1948, in Zams, Tirol, Austria. He holds Austrian nationality and originates from the Tyrolean region.

Career

Alfred Matt began intensive skiing at age 12 and became one of Austria’s strongest junior racers, winning Austrian Youth Champion titles in 1965 and Junior Champion in 1967. He joined the Austrian World Cup team in the 1966/67 season. His career highlights include the bronze medal in slalom at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics (also counting as World Championship medal) and winning the 1968-69 Slalom World Cup title (tied, with 1st place based on best results). He achieved two World Cup victories and nine podiums in total. He also won Austrian national titles in giant slalom and combination in 1969, and slalom in 1973. His career was interrupted by multiple injuries, including leg fractures that caused him to miss the 1969/70 season and end the 1970/71 season early. A final leg fracture in 1973 ended his international amateur career. He then raced professionally in North America for two years. From 1975, Matt worked as a coach for the Österreichischer Skiverband (ÖSV), serving as technique coach for the European Cup group and later coaching the World Cup group until 1982.

His legacy includes his Olympic bronze medal, the 1968-69 Slalom World Cup title, and his role in Austrian skiing as a competitor and coach. He is the nephew of slalom world champion Rudolph Matt.
