Ashton is a city in Osceola County, Iowa, United States. The population was 436 at the 2020 census.
Ashton was laid out in 1872 by the Sioux City & St. Paul Railroad. The city was named from a grove of white ash trees near the town site.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), of which 1.01 square miles (2.62 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2020, there were 436 people, 180 households, and 107 families residing in the city. The population density was 431.9 inhabitants per square mile (166.8/km2). There were 203 housing units at an average density of 201.1 per square mile (77.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.7% White, 0.7% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.0% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 2.8% from other races and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 4.8% of the population.
Of the 180 households, 27.2% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.8% were married couples living together, 9.4% were cohabitating couples, 22.2% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 20.6% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 40.6% of all households were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals, 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 37.9 years. 30.0% of the residents were under the age of 20; 3.0% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 23.6% were from 25 and 44; 27.1% were from 45 and 64; and 16.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.
As of the census of 2010, there were 458 people, 191 households, and 124 families residing in the city. The population density was 453.5 inhabitants per square mile (175.1/km2). There were 211 housing units at an average density of 208.9 per square mile (80.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.0% White, 1.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.9% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.
