Benjamin Bender (born March 7, 2001) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Philadelphia Union. He was the first overall selection in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.

Career

[edit]Prior to playing college soccer, Bender played youth soccer, from the age of 6 through 15 for Coach Barry Stitz and Fewster FC. The one-team, independent Fewster FC Club won 4 Maryland State Cups, 2 USYSA Regional Championships and played for the U15 USYSA National Championships in 2015 2015 USYSA U15 National Championships page. After USYSA changed their age categories (to birth year), Bender then played academy soccer, one season for the Philadelphia Union academy and four years for Baltimore Armour. Concurrently, Bender played high school soccer for Calvert Hall College High School in Towson, Maryland. With Calvert Hall, Bender served as the team's captain, being named an Allstate All-American his junior year, and earning honors from TopDrawerSoccer.com, All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association honors, and was named a Baltimore Sun All-Metro selection.[1]
Ahead of the 2020 NCAA Division I men's soccer season, Bender signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiately for the University of Maryland, College Park. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on sporting events, Bender did not make his Maryland debut until February 19, 2021, starting in a 2–3 loss to Penn State. On March 27, 2021, Bender scored his first collegiate goal against Northwestern University. Bender would finish the 2020 season appearing in all 11 matches for the Terrapins, scoring twice.
Professional
[edit]Following his freshman season with Maryland, he signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer, an expected top five draft pick,[2][3] Bender was selected first overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by Charlotte FC.[4] Bender became the third ever player from the University of Maryland to be selected first overall in the MLS SuperDraft, and the first since Maurice Edu was selected first overall in 2007.[5]
On September 6, 2024, Bender was loaned out to USL Championship side Tampa Bay Rowdies until the end of the season. During this move, Charlotte also excersised a contract extension keeping Bender at the North Carolina club until the end of the 2025 season.[6]
On April 25, 2025, Bender was waived by Charlotte.[7]
On May 9, 2025, Bender signed with Philadelphia Union for the remainder of the 2025 season.[8]

Upbringing in Baltimore
Ben Bender was born on March 7, 2001, in Baltimore, Maryland.[4][11] He grew up in the Baltimore area as the youngest of three brothers, Josh and Jacob, in a close-knit family led by his parents, Mark and Mindy Bender.[12][13][14] Bender began playing soccer at a young age, with his father, Mark, serving as his first coach. His brothers also played soccer, fostering a competitive yet supportive family environment.[6][14] The Bender family emphasized strong faith and mutual support, which played a key role in shaping his early development and values.[13] This familial foundation in the culturally rich environment of Baltimore naturally fostered his emerging interest in sports during his formative years.[15]High school career
Bender attended Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore, Maryland, where he competed on the varsity soccer team for four years as a midfielder.[16] During his senior year, he served as team captain, leading the Cardinals in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) A Conference.[16] Bender emerged as a standout player, earning multiple accolades for his performances. Youth club career
Bender began his youth club career with the independent Fewster FC in Baltimore, joining the club in 2009 at age eight and remaining until 2015.[21] The small, one-team program emphasized development through competitive play, allowing Bender to progress through various age groups while contributing to the squad's successes. During this span, Fewster FC won the Maryland State Cup three consecutive times from 2013 to 2015, including a 2-0 victory over Bethesda Blue 99 in the 2013 U13 final, a 3-0 defeat of Bayshore Soccer Club Juventus in the 2014 U14 final, and a 1-0 win against Frederick FC in the 2015 U15 final to secure a three-peat.[22][23][24] In addition to state titles, Fewster FC achieved national-level recognition, capturing the USYSA Region I Championship in the U15 boys division in 2015 after advancing from the Maryland State Cup.[25] This qualified them for the 2015 USYSA U15 National Championships in Frisco, Texas, where they reached the final but fell 3-1 to Sporting Kansas City Academy.[26][27] Following his time at Fewster FC, Bender spent the 2015–2016 season with the Philadelphia Union Academy, training within Major League Soccer's development pathway and competing in academy matches across the Northeast.[21][28] Bender's primary club development continued with Baltimore Armour from 2016 to 2020, where he played in the US Development Academy, featuring for the U16/17 team from 2017 to 2018 (16 appearances, five goals) and the U18/19 team from 2018 to 2019 (scoring six goals in 20 matches).[16] The program, affiliated with MLS Next, provided high-level competition that honed his skills as a midfielder ahead of college recruitment.[29]College career

USL Championship and NPSL
