BI-Mart was founded in 1955 and is headquartered in Eugene, Oregon. The first store opened out of a garage in Yakima, Washington. At the time, membership cost $2. In 1962, the company opened its first standalone store in Eugene. A second store in Eugene was opened in 1967. By 1970, the chain had eight stores. Bi-Mart was bought by Pay 'n Save in 1975.[3]

In 1988, Pay 'n Save—along with Bi-Mart— was acquired by Thrifty Corporation. There were 37 BI-Mart locations at the time.[4] It was subsequently merged into Thrifty PayLess when Thrifty acquired PayLess Drug from Kmart in 1993.[5][6] in 1996, Rite Aid acquired Thrifty PayLess for $1.3 billion, but did not intend to keep the 44-store BI-Mart chain.[7]

In 1997, Bi-Mart's management and Endeavour Capital, a Portland-based venture capital firm, bought the company from Rite Aid.[8][9] They sold the business to employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan on March 1, 2004 for $94 million, which included $12.5 million contributed from the 401(k) plan.[10][11] The chain consisted 64 stores in Oregon, Washington, and Montana at the time.[9]

In October 2003, Bi-Mart announced it was expanding eastward. Eight stores were planned with the first store in Havre, Montana (though this location soon closed.[12][13] The company expanded into Idaho in 2006, opening a store in Weiser. Another location opened in Emmett in 2009.[14] Bi-Mart opened its 75th store in May 2014.[15] Additional Idaho stores were opened in Kuna, Caldwell, Star, and Rathdrum between 2017 and 2020.[16][17]

Pharmacy closures

[edit]

In 2019, Bi-Mart announced the closure of pharmacies at its East Wenatchee, Washington, Vancouver, Washington, and Scappoose, Oregon locations.[18][19] Bi-Mart announced in November 2019 that it would also close pharmacies at an additional 13 stores in the Portland area.[20] The retail stores affected by the pharmacy closures were to remain open.

On September 30, 2021, Bi-Mart announced that it would close most of its remaining in-store pharmacies at 56 locations. Prescription files would be transferred to nearby Walgreens locations. In select areas where there was no Walgreens nearby, Walgreens would take over and operate the existing pharmacy departments inside those Bi-Mart locations. The locations that retained a pharmacy and operate under Walgreens ownership are Monmouth, Eugene (18th Ave), Stayton, Klamath Falls, (53rd St), La Pine, Prineville, and Weiser, ID.[21][22][23]

Cascade Farm and Outdoor

[edit]

In 2014, Bi-Mart opened its first location under the Cascade Farm and Outdoor name in Walla Walla, Washington. Bi-Mart announced that they were looking at empty buildings in a variety of locations for future stores.[24] Additional locations have since opened in Coos Bay, Oregon, Keizer, Oregon, and Springfield, Oregon.[25][1] Unlike Bi-Mart's regular stores, a membership is not required to shop at Cascade Farm and Outdoor.

Bi-Mart is an employee-owned retail chain specializing in membership-based discount stores that offer a wide range of everyday essentials and general merchandise tailored to the needs of customers in the Pacific Northwest.[1][2] Founded in 1955 in Yakima, Washington, the company began as a small operation in a garage and has since grown into a regional staple, pioneering the membership discount shopping model in the area with a one-time $5 lifetime family membership fee.[1][2] Headquartered in Eugene, Oregon, Bi-Mart became fully employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in 2004, following its acquisition from Rite Aid in 1997.[1][2] As of late 2025, Bi-Mart operates approximately 80 stores across three states—Oregon, Washington, and Idaho—employing over 3,500 people and stocking more than 40,000 items in departments such as automotive, hardware, sporting goods, clothing, and groceries. The company previously operated in-house pharmacies but closed them in 2021, transitioning services to Walgreens.[3][2][4] The company's business model emphasizes value-driven shopping with name-brand products at reduced prices, community involvement through annual contributions exceeding $1 million to local Northwest causes, and a commitment to employee welfare, including profit-sharing and charitable giving programs.[1][2]

History

Founding and early expansion

Bi-Mart was founded in 1955 by a group of residents in Yakima, Washington, who gathered over coffee discussions in a local restaurant to address the need for better value in retail shopping for working people.[5] The company's origins trace back to these informal meetings, where the founders, including businessman Jack Phelan, envisioned a discount retail model amid restrictive Fair Trade laws that limited price competition.[6] The first store opened that year in the garage of one of the founders, operating with limited hours—initially just a few per week—and requiring a $2 lifetime membership fee to access discounted merchandise.[7] This early setup established Bi-Mart as a membership-only discount retailer, emphasizing low prices on general merchandise such as household goods and hardware without extravagant store features or services.[7] The model allowed the company to bypass some legal pricing constraints by treating members as co-owners in a cooperative-like structure, fostering loyalty among customers in the Pacific Northwest.[5] In 1962, Bi-Mart marked a pivotal shift by opening its first standalone store in Eugene, Oregon, at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Chambers Street, transitioning from the modest garage format to larger retail spaces.[7] This expansion prompted the relocation of the corporate headquarters and distribution center to Eugene, centralizing operations to support further growth.[7] By 1967, a second Eugene location opened on River Road, enhancing accessibility in the Willamette Valley.[7] Through the late 1960s and into 1970, Bi-Mart expanded organically to a total of eight stores, strategically targeting rural and small-town communities in Washington and Oregon to serve underserved markets with affordable essentials.[7] This focus on non-urban areas aligned with the company's mission to provide value-driven shopping in regions where big-box retailers were scarce, solidifying its regional footprint without aggressive franchising or acquisitions during this period.[2]

Ownership changes and growth

In 1975, Bi-Mart was sold to the Seattle-based retailer Pay’n Save, marking the beginning of two decades of external ownership that introduced various corporate changes while maintaining operational continuity in its membership-based discount model.[7] This acquisition allowed Bi-Mart to leverage Pay’n Save's resources for modest expansion, growing from a handful of stores to around 20 by the early 1980s, primarily in Oregon and Washington.[7] Despite the shift in control, the company's focus on everyday low prices and regional customer loyalty remained intact, avoiding major disruptions to its core warehouse-style operations.[7] By 1988, Pay’n Save's financial difficulties led to Bi-Mart's acquisition by the Thrifty Corporation, a California-based drugstore chain, which at the time operated 35 Bi-Mart locations.[7] Thrifty appointed Marty Smith as president and CEO, a move that stabilized management and fostered long-term strategic planning amid further corporate restructuring.[7] In 1992, Thrifty itself was acquired by Leonard Green & Partners, repositioning Bi-Mart as a subsidiary under the newly formed Thrifty Payless Corporation, and by 1996, Rite Aid purchased Thrifty Payless, expanding Bi-Mart to 50 stores under the new ownership.[7] These transitions emphasized Bi-Mart's adaptation to larger retail conglomerates while preserving its Pacific Northwest identity.[7] In 1997, a management-led buyout, spearheaded by CEO Marty Smith and financed by Endeavor Capital, reclaimed independence from Rite Aid, allowing Bi-Mart to refocus on its regional roots and customer-centric approach in the Pacific Northwest.[7] In 2004, Bi-Mart became fully employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).[7] This shift enabled targeted growth, including entries into Idaho markets and a brief expansion into Montana with a store opening in Havre in 2003.[8] By 2014, the chain had reached 75 stores, solidifying its presence across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho through steady, community-oriented development rather than aggressive national scaling.[7] That year also saw a key leadership transition when Marty Smith retired after 26 years at the helm, with Rich Truett appointed as the new president and CEO to guide ongoing expansion and operational refinements.[7] Under Smith's tenure, Bi-Mart had navigated multiple ownership shifts to achieve sustainable growth, emphasizing employee involvement and regional market dominance.[7]

Recent developments

In 2020, Bi-Mart marked its 65th anniversary while navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including supply chain disruptions and shifting consumer behaviors that tested the retailer's resilience. Amid these difficulties, the company opened its 80th store in Rathdrum, Idaho, on March 26, converting a former grocery building into a 30,000-square-foot location that drew significant local interest despite health restrictions. This expansion underscored Bi-Mart's commitment to growth in the Pacific Northwest, even as the anniversary highlighted six decades of employee-owned operations since its founding in 1955.[9][10] A major operational shift occurred in 2021 when Bi-Mart announced its exit from the pharmacy business, closing all 56 in-store pharmacies across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho to focus on core retail operations. The transition began in October 2021, with prescription files and inventory transferred to Walgreens, completing by January 2022; in rural areas lacking nearby Walgreens, Bi-Mart partnered with local pharmacies to maintain access. This decision, driven by competitive pressures and rising costs, raised concerns about reduced medication access in underserved rural communities in these states, where Bi-Mart had been a key provider, exacerbating broader pharmacy desert trends. That same year, Bi-Mart launched its e-commerce platform at www.bimart.com, enabling online shopping with in-store pickup to adapt to digital retail demands and enhance convenience for members.[11][4][12][13] Store network adjustments continued into the mid-2020s, reflecting economic pressures and site-specific performance. In January 2024, Bi-Mart closed its long-standing Meadowland store in Southeast Portland, Oregon, at 17108 SE Powell Blvd., after 41 years of operation, citing persistently weak sales in a competitive urban market. Reports in July 2025 indicated a potential closure for the Willakenzie Road store in Eugene, Oregon, as the building owner listed the property for lease, though no official announcement had been made by November and operations continued. Balancing these closures, Bi-Mart opened a new store in Nampa, Idaho, at 407 12th Avenue Road on October 16, 2024, following resumed construction in July after a several-month pause, bolstering its Idaho presence.[14][15][16][17]

Business operations

Store format and membership model

Bi-Mart operates as a members-only discount retailer, requiring customers to purchase a lifetime membership for a one-time fee of $5, which covers all family members residing at the same address and grants perpetual access to all stores without renewal costs.[1][18] This closed-door policy ensures that only cardholders can enter and shop, emphasizing exclusive access to discounted pricing as a core operational feature.[19] Membership benefits include participation in promotions such as Lucky Number Tuesday drawings and members-only coupons, along with the ability to place online orders for in-store pickup, though the company does not offer direct online sales fulfillment.[18] The stores follow a no-frills, warehouse-style format designed for efficiency and cost savings, featuring self-service aisles with a centralized checkout area to streamline operations and keep overhead low.[1] Typical Bi-Mart locations span approximately 30,000 square feet, with consistent floor plans across the chain that prioritize accessibility and quick navigation for everyday shopping needs.[20] Operating hours are generally 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, providing extended weekday access while maintaining a focus on community-oriented service.[21] Bi-Mart's operational model centers on everyday low prices through its "Everyday Low Bi-Mart" strategy, achieved via bulk purchasing and regional sourcing tailored to Northwest customer preferences, allowing the retailer to offer competitive values without frequent sales events.[1][22] Unlike larger big-box competitors such as Costco, which emphasize bulk perishables and require annual fees, Bi-Mart targets smaller towns with a more compact footprint and lifetime membership, focusing on non-perishable hard goods and convenience for local shoppers.[23] This approach supports direct integration of any online orders with in-store pickup services, reinforcing the physical store as the primary shopping venue.[18]

Merchandise offerings

Bi-Mart stores offer a diverse range of general merchandise tailored to the needs of Northwest communities, including clothing such as apparel from brands like Rustler and New Balance, housewares for home maintenance, automotive supplies for vehicle care, and sporting goods encompassing hunting and outdoor equipment from manufacturers like Remington and Coleman.[1][24] These categories emphasize practical, everyday items that support rural and working-class lifestyles, with selections varying slightly by store to reflect local demands. Additionally, hardware departments stock tools and building supplies, while seasonal items like holiday decorations and summer patio gear provide timely variety.[1][22] The grocery section focuses on non-perishables, snacks, and household essentials, featuring national brands such as Crest for oral care, Naturemade for vitamins, Metamucil for health supplements, and Little Debbie for baked goods, alongside beverages including beer and wine.[24] Prior to 2021, Bi-Mart integrated in-store pharmacies that provided prescription services, over-the-counter medications, and basic health consultations, allowing customers to combine pharmaceutical needs with general shopping in a convenient one-stop format; these pharmacies were a core offering since the company's early years but were closed across most locations that year, with prescriptions transitioned to Walgreens.[11][25] Bi-Mart emphasizes affordable house brands alongside these national names to enhance value, with private labels such as Chopstick House for kitchen items, Kitchen Extras for cookware, and Ecolution for eco-friendly products helping to maintain competitive pricing without compromising quality.[26] The company's pricing strategy revolves around Everyday Low Bi-Mart (ELB) values, achieved through bulk purchasing and minimal overhead from its membership model, which eliminates the need for extensive advertising budgets and passes savings directly to customers seeking reliable discounts on over 40,000 items.[1] This approach prioritizes deep, consistent reductions on brand-name goods, fostering loyalty among budget-conscious shoppers in underserved areas.[24]

Store locations and expansion

Bi-Mart operates 82 stores across the Pacific Northwest, with the majority in Oregon (63 stores), followed by Washington (12 stores) and Idaho (7 stores) as of November 2025.[27][3] The chain's footprint is concentrated in rural and suburban communities, deliberately avoiding major urban centers to serve underserved markets.[28] reflecting a regional focus without presence in Montana following the closure of its sole location there in the early 2000s.[27][29] The company's expansion strategy emphasizes growth in small towns and secondary markets, where competition from larger national retailers is limited. Early development centered on Washington and Oregon, with initial stores opening in communities like Yakima, Washington, in 1955 and Eugene, Oregon, in 1962. Later entries into Idaho began in the 2010s, targeting areas such as Ontario and Weiser, to extend service to additional rural populations in the region. For example, a new store opened in Nampa, Idaho, in October 2024.[7][30][31] This approach prioritizes community-oriented retail over aggressive urban penetration, supporting steady, localized growth.[7] Bi-Mart's distribution relies on a centralized warehouse and corporate headquarters in Eugene, Oregon, established in 1962 to streamline logistics for its regional stores. This facility handles procurement, inventory management, and supply chain operations, enabling efficient support for the chain's footprint without international expansion or additional distribution hubs.[7][32] Store counts have shown consistent growth since inception, rising from 8 locations in 1970 to 35 by 1988, 50 in 1996, over 70 in 2014, and 80 around 2020. Recent years have included adjustments through selective closures and continued expansion, such as the planned closure of the Willakenzie Road store in Eugene (which remains open as of November 2025).[7]

Corporate structure

Employee ownership

In 2004, Bi-Mart transitioned to employee ownership through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), acquiring the company from its prior management and investors including Endeavor Capital.[2][19] The transaction, completed on February 27, 2004, as a leveraged ESOP, enabled employees to purchase the company, with over 72% of the approximately 2,300 eligible associates participating and committing $12.5 million.[33] By 2005, the ESOP had achieved 100% ownership, making Bi-Mart fully employee-owned.[19] The ESOP operates by allocating shares of the company to employees' retirement accounts, typically as part of their 401(k) or similar plans, without requiring personal contributions beyond payroll deductions in some cases.[34] This structure aligns employee interests with the company's long-term success, fostering profit-sharing through annual contributions based on performance and dividends distributed to participants.[35] As a private entity, Bi-Mart does not trade publicly, which supports sustained focus on regional operations rather than short-term shareholder pressures.[2] The ESOP has delivered key benefits, including enhanced retirement security for over 3,000 associates and improved retention by tying financial rewards to tenure and performance.[36][37] It aligns with the company's Pacific Northwest values, promoting stability in an industry prone to volatility.[38] This ownership model has shaped Bi-Mart's culture, emphasizing community involvement through employee-led volunteering, such as with United Way and local sports teams, while cultivating loyalty and a service-oriented atmosphere that reduces typical retail churn.[5][38]

Leadership and headquarters

Bi-Mart's headquarters is located in Eugene, Oregon, where the corporate office and distribution center were established by 1962 following the opening of the second store, serving as the central hub for administrative offices, financial management, merchandising, human resources, and information systems. The facility also houses the primary distribution center, supporting the chain's 80 stores across Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.[39][19][40] The current leadership is headed by Rich Truett, who has served as president and CEO since approximately 2014, as of 2025, overseeing strategic decisions amid the company's employee-owned structure. Prior to Truett, Marty Smith held the position of CEO from 1988 to 2014, during which he led key buyouts, such as the 2004 employee stock ownership plan transition, and drove significant expansions while emphasizing internal promotions from within the ranks.[19][11][33][41] As a privately held corporation owned entirely by its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) established in 2004, Bi-Mart operates under a governance model that prioritizes long-term stability and regional market focus. The board of directors, guided by ESOP principles, includes representatives from the employee base and external industry experts to ensure balanced oversight, with company communications consistently underscoring fiscal conservatism in operations and investments.[39][42][33]

Cascade Farm and Outdoor

Cascade Farm and Outdoor was launched in 2014 as a specialized division of Bi-Mart, focusing on farm, ranch, and outdoor supplies through a distinct store concept separate from the main Bi-Mart locations.[43] The initiative aimed to expand Bi-Mart's offerings into more targeted rural retail by opening standalone stores, with the first location debuting in Walla Walla, Washington, and subsequent openings in Oregon communities such as Coos Bay.[43] These stores operate without the membership requirement of traditional Bi-Mart outlets, providing open access to customers while benefiting from the parent company's infrastructure for services like online order pickups at either Cascade or Bi-Mart sites.[44][45] The division's merchandise emphasizes practical items for agricultural and outdoor lifestyles, including livestock feed for cattle, deer, and multi-species needs; fencing supplies such as wire, panels, electric chargers, and tools; hardware and power tools from brands like Milwaukee and DeWalt; gardening products like plants, seeds, and bulbs; and hunting gear within broader outdoor categories.[45][43] Additional offerings cover equine and livestock care, outdoor power equipment, and exclusive lines like Cascade Outdoor Gear for items such as tarps and apparel.[46] Stores typically range from 25,000 to 65,000 square feet, smaller than Bi-Mart's standard 70,000-square-foot format, allowing for a curated selection that prioritizes quality brands like Carhartt and Columbia alongside everyday ranch essentials.[43][47] This retail arm targets customers in rural, agriculture-intensive regions of the Pacific Northwest, providing specialized support for farmers, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts through knowledgeable staff and value-driven pricing.[43][47] By repurposing vacant buildings in these areas, the stores deliver expert advice on products like trailer sprayers and feed management without overlapping core Bi-Mart operations.[43] Growth has been measured, starting with one store a decade ago and reaching five locations by 2024, including recent expansions in Oregon sites like Springfield and Keizer to complement rather than compete with the broader Bi-Mart network.[48][44]

Online and e-commerce initiatives

In 2021, Bi-Mart launched its e-commerce platform through a redesigned website at www.bimart.com, enabling members to shop online for a selection of products from both Bi-Mart stores and the affiliated Cascade Farm and Outdoor brand.[11] The rollout began with a pilot in select stores near the company's Eugene, Oregon headquarters before expanding to all 84 locations across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, marking a shift toward omnichannel retail while maintaining the membership-based model.[49] This initiative was powered by Kibo's e-commerce and order management system, implemented over nine months in partnership with digital agency Ignitiv, to support buy-online-pick-up-in-store (BOPIS) fulfillment without direct shipping options.[50] Key features of the platform include real-time inventory browsing across categories that mirror in-store offerings, such as sporting goods, housewares, and seasonal items, though availability is limited to current stock at participating locations.[24] Members must log in with their $5 lifetime membership to access personalized discounts and exclusive deals, ensuring the online experience aligns with Bi-Mart's discount store ethos.[49] Customers can select items, view store-specific availability and estimated pickup times, and complete orders for convenient in-store collection, with options to pick up at any Bi-Mart or Cascade location.[50] The e-commerce system integrates seamlessly with Bi-Mart's physical operations, leveraging centralized order management to route fulfillments from local stores rather than a dedicated online warehouse, which supports efficient handling tied to the company's Eugene-based supply chain.[51] This hybrid approach enhances customer convenience, particularly in rural areas served by Bi-Mart, by combining digital browsing with in-person pickup while prioritizing the core in-store shopping focus.[50] Post-launch, the platform has driven a 200% increase in conversions and boosted website traffic and new memberships, underscoring its role in modernizing retail without shifting away from employee-owned, community-oriented operations.[51]
