"Call Me Every Day" is a duet by American singer Chris Brown and Nigerian singer Wizkid, released by RCA Records as the third official single from Brown's tenth studio album, Breezy, on June 17, 2022.[2][3]

Background and release

[edit]

Brown and WizKid had previously collaborated on two songs: the 2016 remix of the song "Shabba", also featuring R&B singer Trey Songz and rapper French Montana, and the single "African Bad Gyal", contained in WizKid's 2017 album Sounds from the Other Side. In November 2021, Brown made an appearance on Wizkid's "Made in Lagos tour", performing his song "Go Crazy" in London, marking his first performance in the UK in 11 years, following the revocation of his ban from entering the country implemented in 2010.[4] In June 2022, during an interview with radio host Big Boy, Brown said that he and WizKid share a longtime friendship relationship outside of music, and that they previously did various studio sessions together where he felt like they ended up doing "fun songs", but with "Call Me Every Day" he accomplished his desire of making a "real record" with the Nigerian artist.[5]

On June 10, 2022, Brown posted a snippet of "Call Me Every Day" on his Instagram account, in a video showing him and his dancing crew executing a choreography for the song,[6] using moves created by Jamaican dancehall dancers. The track was released seven days later as the album's official third single.[2]

Composition

[edit]

"Call Me Every Day" is a mid-tempo Afrobeats song.[7][8][9] The singers trade their vocals on the song's verses and choruses, with Brown starting his first part singing “Girl, I love you, plus I’ll never make you minus / If I let you smoke, is you gon’ lose my lighter? / If you paranoid, then I’ma spend the night”.[10] According to Rap-Up magazine, the song's instrumental is characterized by Afrobeats rhythm and a saxophone outro.[10]

Music video

[edit]

The music video for the song, directed by Child., was released on August 24, 3033 through the Brown's YouTube channel.[11]

Composition and lyrics

Musical style and structure

"Call Me Every Day" fuses contemporary R&B with Afrobeats elements, creating a laid-back, groove-oriented sound driven by rhythmic percussion and melodic vocal layers typical of Wizkid's contributions to global pop.[21] The track's production, handled by BlaiseBeatz, RoccStar, and DJ Tunez—Wizkid's official DJ—incorporates warm island vibes through syncopated beats and subtle basslines, emphasizing a relaxed tempo of 172 beats per minute in E minor.[9][22] This blend allows Chris Brown to adapt an Afrobeats-inflected delivery, aligning his R&B phrasing with Wizkid's patois-accented verses for a cohesive, cross-cultural appeal.[21] The song adheres to a standard verse-chorus structure, opening with an intro that sets the percussive foundation before transitioning into Verse 1, shared between Wizkid's lead vocals and Brown's harmonies.[21] A pre-chorus builds tension, leading into the chorus dominated by Wizkid's melodic hook, with Brown layering ad-libs for depth. Verse 2 follows a similar pattern, maintaining the alternating vocal dynamic, before repeating the chorus with fuller harmonies. The arrangement concludes with a jazz-influenced instrumental outro featuring bass guitar prominence, providing a smooth fade-out that contrasts the upbeat rhythm.[21] This structure supports the track's concise 2:26 runtime, prioritizing infectious grooves over complex progressions.[22]

Thematic content

The lyrics of "Call Me Every Day" center on themes of romantic infatuation and devotion, with the protagonists expressing a strong desire for constant communication from their romantic interests.[21] [9] The chorus repeatedly implores, "Call me every day," underscoring an insistence on daily contact to sustain emotional connection, while verses portray the singers as reliable partners willing to provide emotional and material support.[21] [23] A key element involves rivalry and persuasion, as the narrators target women in existing relationships, questioning their partners' adequacy and offering alternatives like financial security—"Let me put some money in your bag, you don’t need him"—to entice defection.[9] [23] This reflects a competitive dynamic in pursuit of love, blending affection with pragmatic incentives rooted in wealth and lifestyle provision, such as promises to "show you many tings you can utilize."[21] Wizkid's verses, delivered in a mix of English and Nigerian Pidgin, emphasize unconditional love and reassurance, with lines like "Na only you give me love wey make me nice," highlighting transformative emotional dependency.[21] Broader motifs include empowerment through partnership and hope for mutual joy, evoking moods of love and optimism amid social undertones of relational investment.[23] The song avoids overt conflict, instead framing devotion as a pathway to stability, though interpretations note its laid-back portrayal of potentially transactional romance.[9] [24]

Reception

Critical response

Critics offered favorable assessments of "Call Me Every Day," particularly commending its Afrobeats-infused production and the effective collaboration between Chris Brown and Wizkid. In reviewing the parent album Breezy, Soul In Stereo identified the track as a highlight amid otherwise inconsistent material, praising its "warm island grooves" that "FINALLY give CB a fresh landscape to explore, happily dragging him from the usual trap drums and debauchery."[43] HipHopDX noted the song's fluid structure, where "each verse waterfalls into the next," and affirmed that Brown and Wizkid "work well together" despite vocal accents, positioning it as part of a stronger mid-album sequence.[44] Ratings Game Music assigned the track a score of 3 out of 5, reflecting solid but not exceptional execution within the album's R&B framework.[45] The single's reception extended to industry recognition, winning the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration, as announced by the organization on February 25, 2023.[7] Coverage from major outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone remained limited, with mentions primarily in album contexts rather than standalone analyses, underscoring the track's niche appeal in blending contemporary R&B with Nigerian influences.[46]

Commercial performance

"Call Me Every Day" debuted on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart following its release in July 2022 and ultimately peaked at number 4.[47] The track also reached number 28 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, marking its strongest performance among singles from Chris Brown's album Breezy. Internationally, it charted modestly, peaking at number 16 on the Dutch Single Tip chart and appearing on various global streaming rankings without significant top-tier placements. The song received RIAA certification for Gold status on January 5, 2023, denoting 500,000 equivalent units in the United States from sales and streaming.[48] It was later upgraded to Platinum on November 12, 2024, reflecting combined sales and on-demand streaming exceeding 1,000,000 units.[49] No certifications from other major territories, such as the UK or Canada, have been reported as of October 2025. Streaming contributed substantially to its metrics, with the track accumulating over 184 million plays on Spotify.[50] The official music video on YouTube, released August 24, 2022, has garnered tens of millions of views, bolstering its digital footprint alongside radio airplay on urban contemporary formats.[3] Overall, while not achieving crossover pop success on the Billboard Hot 100, the single's performance underscored its appeal within R&B audiences.

Legacy and impact

Certifications

"Call Me Every Day" earned its first certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States on January 17, 2023, when it was awarded gold status for 500,000 equivalent units comprising sales and streaming activity.[51] On November 12, 2024, the RIAA upgraded the single to platinum certification, recognizing 1,000,000 equivalent units.[52] No certifications have been reported from other international bodies such as Music Canada or the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Cultural influence

"Call Me Every Day" exemplifies the fusion of Afrobeats rhythms with contemporary R&B, highlighting a trend of cross-cultural collaborations that propelled Nigerian sounds into American mainstream music circles. The track's production, involving Wizkid's official DJ Tunez and Blaise Beatz, incorporated infectious percussive elements typical of Afrobeats, which blended seamlessly with Chris Brown's melodic R&B delivery to create a laid-back anthem appealing to global audiences.[9][1] This stylistic integration mirrored broader shifts in the early 2020s, where Afrobeats gained traction through high-profile partnerships, as seen in contemporaneous hits like Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl" featuring Wizkid.[53] The song's cultural footprint extends to live performances and social media engagement, where it has become a staple in Chris Brown's sets, fostering fan interactions on platforms like TikTok through reaction videos and concert clips. Its platinum certification in the United States, achieved by November 2024 after surpassing one million units, underscores sustained streaming popularity that reinforced Afrobeats' commercial viability in Western markets, aiding artists like Wizkid in accumulating multiple Billboard Hot 100 entries as the first African performer to do so four times.[54] While not spawning distinct memes or viral challenges, the track's enduring play in Brown's tours, including the 2024 Breezy Bowl events, has cemented its role in bridging African and American pop sensibilities without dominating niche subcultures.[55][56]
