Chimelong Group Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 长隆集团; pinyin: Chánglóng Jítuán; Jyutping: coeng4 lung4 zaap6 tyun4) is a Chinese company that owns and operates theme parks in China. The company also owns restaurants, hotels, and other businesses.[1] It is one of the leading Chinese amusement park operators.[2] The company was founded in 1989 by Su Zhigang, a local resident in Panyu, Guangzhou, Guangdong, who first established Xiangjiang Restaurant, his first enterprise under Chimelong Group, prior to its upgrading into the current Xiangjiang Hotel in 1994. Inspired by his success in the catering business, Su, after several field research visits to safari parks overseas, soon set up his mind to open a private zoo; his aim was to allow the Chinese citizens to see wildlife from all over the world, without going abroad. This gave birth to the establishment of Chimelong Safari Park, formerly known as Xiangjiang Safari Park in Guangzhou, China, the biggest wildlife theme park in Asia at present.

The headquarters is located on the grounds of Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort in Panyu District, Guangzhou.[3]

Criticisms and Animal Welfare Issues

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in opened China's first breeding facility in March 2017, drawing sharp criticism from animal rights organizations amid global scrutiny of captive programs following the 2013 documentary , which highlighted welfare issues at and prompted the company to end its breeding in 2016. Groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and The Orca Project condemned the initiative, arguing that inherently compromises the animals' physical and psychological due to their complex social structures and vast natural habitats, and that breeding programs exacerbate these concerns rather than mitigate them. To support the facility, Chimelong employed a dedicated team of approximately 30 staff members, including international experts, to provide round-the-clock care for the orcas, as the company emphasized the animals' high social needs. This move occurred against a backdrop of intensifying international debates on the of keeping cetaceans in , with critics pointing to documented cases of stress, shortened lifespans, and abnormal behaviors in similar facilities worldwide. Broader concerns have extended to Chimelong's and parks, where activists have raised issues about animal sourcing practices and conditions. Reports indicate that many animals, including koalas at Chimelong in —the largest population outside —may have been sourced through controversial imports, with groups like Animals Asia criticizing inadequate habitat simulations and potential stress from high visitor volumes. Investigations by the Cetacean in 2018 highlighted welfare lapses at Ocean Kingdom, such as overcrowded conditions for dolphins and orcas, and questioned the of wild captures for entertainment purposes. In October 2025, Chimelong faced renewed criticism when authorities denied a permit for Marineland Canada to export 30 beluga whales to the group, citing welfare risks including Chimelong's breeding programs and use of marine mammals in performances. Animal rights organizations, such as Animal Justice, applauded the decision, arguing it prevented further exploitation. Chimelong defended its facilities as adhering to international standards and contributing to conservation, though critics maintained that commercial interests prevail. In response to these criticisms, Chimelong has defended its operations by framing breeding programs, including the orca initiative, as contributions to conservation efforts, claiming they support preservation and . The company has asserted that its facilities adhere to international standards and that programs like the Killer Whale Breeding Base aim to build self-sustaining populations, though skeptics from organizations such as the argue that such claims prioritize commercial interests over genuine welfare improvements.
