Background and development

[edit]

In August 2011, RCA Music Group announced it was disbanding J Records along with Arista Records and Jive Records. With the shutdown, Mario, and all other artists previously signed to these three labels, will release his future albums on the RCA Records label.[7][8]

During his appearance on BET's 106 & Park on July 10, 2013, to premiere, the video for "Somebody Else", Mario stated that he felt the album recorded with Rico Love did not feel part of his career plan and that he scrapped that album and went on to record his then-titled album Evolve, which was set to be released on September 17, 2013.[9] The album was not released, and Mario left RCA Records in 2015.

In mid-2015, Mario announced that he has reunited with Scott Storch, who produced his 2004 hit "Let Me Love You", on a new album, titled Never 2 Late for a song called "Enemy", that ended up being finished by Chris Brown and published on his album Heartbreak on a Full Moon. Never 2 Late was scheduled to be released on November 27, 2015, but was pushed to December 4, 2015, but the album was not released.[10]

On May 6, 2016, Mario premiered and released the single "I Need More".[11] On December 13, 2016, he released the single "Let Me Help You".[12] On June 16, 2017, he released the single "Pain is the New Pleasure".[13] A remixed version of "Let Me Help You" featuring Jamaican recording artist Konshens was released on August 18, 2017.[14]

In mid-2018, Mario spoke with the FunX radio station during the Oh My! Music Festival in June 2018, announcing that the album's final title was Dancing Shadows and would be released later in 2018 with a new single called "Drowning": "We changed the name of it. Making an album is like giving birth to something. You go through different names and different vibes."[15]

Following the release of the second single, "Dancing Shadows", and its accompanying music video, the album's cover art, release date and tracklist were revealed.[16]

"Drowning", was released on July 20, 2018, as the album's first single and was accompanied by its music video. The song has peaked at number 30 on the US Adult R&B Songs chart and later peaked at number 28.[17]

The title track "Dancing Shadows" was issued as the album's second single on September 14, 2018, alongside its music video.[18]

"Care for You" was released alongside its music video on March 15, 2019, as the third single from the album.[19] The music video was directed by Khufu Najee.

The music video for the track "Goes Like That" premiered on October 4, 2018.[20] The remix version by GXNXVS was released on August 2, 2019.[21]

Critical reception

[edit]

HotNewHipHop noted that Dancing Shadows finds himself in a convalescent mood, though at this seems obvious that at this point, Mario is more at ease in a dimmer spotlight hanging over his head." The website called the album a "surprisingly cohesive comeback attempt, very much the work of a wizened individual who writes on his vision board each morning."[22]

Dancing Shadows is the fifth studio album by American R&B singer and songwriter Mario, released on October 5, 2018, through his independent label New Citizen LLC in partnership with Empire Distribution. Consisting of 11 tracks with a total runtime of approximately 37 minutes, the album features no guest appearances and showcases Mario's solo artistry across introspective R&B ballads and uptempo tracks infused with electronic and trap elements. Recorded primarily in at FRQNCY Studios and Sticky Studios, Dancing Shadows represents Mario's return to music following a nine-year gap since his previous studio , D.N.A. (), during which he focused on acting roles and personal development. Executive produced by Jake Gosling—known for work with artists like and —the project explores themes of emotional vulnerability, resilience, monogamy, and self-reflection, drawing from Mario's life experiences to elevate with lush production and expansive soundscapes. The album's lead single, "Drowning," was released in July 2018, accompanied by a highlighting themes of overwhelming emotions in relationships. Subsequent singles included the title track "Dancing Shadows," featuring by Richard "Richy" Jackson in its official video, and "Goes Like That," which emphasized the album's rhythmic, dance-oriented side. The tracklist comprises: "Drowning" (3:38), "Too Many Options" (3:33), "Dancing Shadows" (3:00), "Mirror" (3:21), "Gold Plates" (3:01), "Good Times" (3:11), "What You Started" (4:23), "One Man Woman" (3:13), "Care For You" (3:32), "Goes Like That" (3:26), and "I Believe" (3:20). Critically, Dancing Shadows received mixed to positive reception for its mature songwriting and genre experimentation, though it did not achieve major commercial chart success, aligning with Mario's shift toward artistic independence over mainstream pop appeal. The project solidified Mario's evolution as an artist, bridging his early-2000s hits like "Let Me Love You" with a more therapeutic and electronically textured sound.

Background

Development

Following the release of his fourth studio album D.N.A. in 2009, Mario embarked on a nine-year hiatus from full-length projects, a period shaped by personal challenges including frustrations with label politics and the evolving landscape, which created uncertainties around expectations and artistic authenticity. This break allowed him to prioritize and seek greater from major label oversight, reflecting a deliberate shift toward music that aligned more closely with his personal experiences rather than commercial pressures. In 2016, Mario began initial songwriting sessions that laid the foundation for Dancing Shadows, focusing on raw, authentic expression as a means of processing life events and reclaiming his creative voice. He founded his independent label, New Citizen LLC, in 2016 to foster this autonomy, officially launching it with announcements in 2017 and partnering with to expand distribution while maintaining control over artistic decisions. This setup enabled him to avoid the constraints of traditional major labels and emphasize self-directed projects. For Dancing Shadows, Mario co-wrote all 11 tracks—a first in his discography—drawing from deep personal growth and therapeutic reflection, particularly after the 2017 death of his mother, which influenced the album's layered exploration of life and career. He served as executive producer alongside Jake Gosling, whose collaboration helped refine the introspective themes into cohesive songs prioritizing emotional depth over hit-making formulas.

Recording

The recording of Dancing Shadows spanned from mid-2016 to early 2018, with primary sessions held in London at studios including FRQNCY and others, supplemented by work in Los Angeles at Amerycan Studios. Mario relocated to London for the initial phase, collaborating closely with executive producer Jake Gosling—known for work with artists like Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes—the two connected at a local event and bonded over shared artistic visions, including Gosling's affinity for the number 17, which aligned with Mario's personal symbolism. These foundational sessions lasted about two months, focusing on establishing the album's core sound through organic songwriting and production. Gosling oversaw production on multiple tracks, emphasizing a collaborative environment that drew from London's musical vibe to infuse the project with introspective depth. Additional producers contributed to specific songs, such as xSDTRK on the lead single "Drowning," where he co-wrote and handled production alongside Mario and Daecolm Holland; Daecolm also produced "Good Times," incorporating live guitar elements for its soulful tone. Further contributions came from Pham, J Warner, P2J, and Ryan McDermott across the album. As an independent project released via Mario's New Citizen LLC in partnership with EMPIRE, the sessions navigated challenges of self-funding while maintaining high production standards, allowing full creative control but requiring careful resource management. A notable collaborative highlight was the by legend on "," suggested by one of Mario's managers after hearing the track's potential for blues infusion. Guy, impressed by the song, traveled to the studio and recorded several takes, deliberately merging R&B grooves with his signature guitar style to evoke a timeless, emotive feel. Following the core recording, —including additional refinements with various writers and producers—extended for six to seven months, culminating in mixing and mastering in early to finalize the 11-track album ahead of its October release.

Musical content

Style and composition

Dancing Shadows is characterized by a predominant R&B style infused with "cosmic soul" elements, as described by Mario himself, featuring smooth vocals over mid-tempo grooves and subtle electronic production that lends a modern, introspective atmosphere. The album comprises 11 tracks totaling 37:38 minutes, blending traditional R&B balladry—such as the reflective opener "Drowning"—with upbeat numbers like "Goes Like That," all unified through live instrumentation including guitars and keys alongside minimalistic beats for a cohesive flow. Drawing influences from classic soul artists like , evident in the harmonious structure of "I Believe," and contemporary R&B figures such as in its atmospheric production, the album marks a shift from Mario's earlier pop-leaning works toward a more mature sonic palette. Compositional highlights include the fusion of guitar in "," featuring veteran musician , which adds layered textures, while the title track employs synth-driven rhythms to evoke a sense of ethereal movement. Overall, the record is structured as a seamless listening experience, transitioning from introspective beginnings to energetic conclusions without filler, emphasizing emotional and sonic continuity throughout.

Lyrics and themes

The lyrics of Dancing Shadows center on themes of introspection, vulnerability, and personal growth, drawing heavily from Mario's real-life experiences with addiction recovery and relational challenges. Mario has described the album as a therapeutic outlet for processing his mother's heroin addiction and her 2017 overdose death, which influenced tracks exploring emotional overwhelm and self-reckoning. For instance, "Drowning" employs the metaphor of submersion in water to depict the turmoil of being torn between two women—one representing lust and the other true love—highlighting the internal conflict of fleeting connections and emotional dependency. All lyrics on the album were co-written by Mario, reflecting his shift toward authentic storytelling informed by his role on the TV series Empire and his own battles with substance abuse. This process involved peeling back layers of his career and personal history, as Mario noted in interviews, to create message-driven content that moves beyond surface-level romance. The recurring motif of "dancing shadows" symbolizes elusive emotions, inner struggles, and the hidden facets of self-discovery, as seen in the title track where Mario sings of projections on walls representing uncertain yet beautiful souls in transient relationships. Empowerment emerges in songs like "Care for You," which addresses the fear of losing a partner amid toxicity, and "I Believe," emphasizing resilience and faith in recovery. The album follows a arc of personal and relational dynamics, progressing through themes of commitment and in tracks like "One Man Woman" and culminating in hope and renewal. This structure mirrors Mario's evolution at age 32, transitioning from the romantic pop of his earlier albums—such as his debut focused on youthful —to a more therapeutic, mature expression that prioritizes vulnerability over escapism. By channeling these experiences, Mario aimed to connect with listeners facing similar battles, underscoring growth through honest reflection.

HotNewHipHop described the project as "surprisingly cohesive" with a "convalescent mood," highlighting its reflective tone and positioning it as the singer's most personal work to date, born from introspection on his career and life experiences. The track "Good Times" features blues legend Buddy Guy. User reviews on Album of the Year echoed this sentiment but introduced mixed elements, often calling it Mario's "best but not great" effort. Despite these reservations, reviewers lauded the growth in Mario's songwriting, particularly its transformative , as observed in an where the album's depth was deemed "worth the wait" after his hiatus. Critics pointed to some weaknesses, including uneven pacing that made certain sections feel less engaging despite strong singles, and limited mainstream appeal stemming from its independent release on EMPIRE, which resulted in sparse professional coverage. No aggregate score from was available due to the limited number of reviews, but fan reception was bolstered by positive buzz, with many hailing it as an underrated gem in ; user scores averaged around 55 out of 100 on Album of the Year.

Commercial performance

Dancing Shadows, released independently through , achieved modest commercial success reflective of its niche R&B positioning in a streaming-dominated market. The album peaked at number 41 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Album Sales chart in 2018, but did not enter the main due to the era's emphasis on streaming metrics and its independent status. Sales were limited, with digital downloads driving initial performance via EMPIRE's distribution. Internationally, the album saw minor airplay in the UK and but failed to secure positions on major foreign charts. A vinyl edition released in helped sustain interest among collectors, providing a physical format boost for dedicated fans. The lead single "" played a key role in generating buzz, peaking at number 28 on the chart and aggregating performance that supported the album's overall visibility. Performance was influenced by Mario's long hiatus since his 2009 album D.N.A., as well as the project's introspective shift, which curtailed crossover appeal relative to earlier commercial hits like "Let Me Love You."
