Gosling produced 9 tracks on the album, which went to number 1 on the US Billboard 200 with 145,000 equivalent album units, of which 121,000 copies were pure album sales.

Joe Levy, writing for Rolling Stone noted "Illuminate mixes professions of romantic agony like "Mercy" (where a quietly hummed hook explodes into crashing drums), with nice-boy valentines like "Treat You Better" and bedroom come ons like "Lights On. For Jon Reyes of Idolator, "[Shawn's] most noticeable change, aside from the tight music hall sonics, is the subtle infusion of sex into the lyrics. He's graduated from songs like "Kid in Love" to fare like "Lights On" and "Patience." Both ballads paint clear pictures of behind-closed-doors moments, and the sexual nature of the lyrics doesn't qualify as innuendo by any means."[41]

Shania Twain

[edit]

After completing the Shawn Mendes album Illuminate, Gosling was asked to work with another Canadian artist, this time being Shania Twain on her fifth studio album, Now. Now was released on 29 September 2017 by Mercury Nashville.[42] It is Twain's first new studio album in 15 years, since her 2002 release, Up!.

This setup allowed Gosling to experiment with self-taught recording and mixing techniques, initially serving as a creative hub for his own projects and emerging collaborations. Over time, the studio evolved from its modest origins into a professional production space, notably hosting the recording of Ed Sheeran's early extended plays, including You Need Me, I Don't Need You EP, Loose Change, Songs I Wrote with Amy, and between 2009 and 2011. These sessions marked a pivotal phase in the studio's development, transitioning it from a personal workspace to a key venue for artist development and full-band recordings that emphasized live performance energy. The studio's technical foundation centers on a DDA AMR 24 mixing console, originally from Hans Zimmer's Chelsea studio, paired with vintage JBL 4311B monitors for monitoring, and Steinberg's Cubase software (upgraded from SX3 to version 5 during early projects) for digital audio workstation operations. Additional gear includes the Boss RC30 Loop Station for live looping elements and Audient preamps such as the ASP880 for multi-channel recording, alongside vintage instruments that facilitate a streamlined workflow. This configuration supports Gosling's signature organic, live-band production style, prioritizing quick setups for capturing authentic band interactions and acoustic warmth over heavily processed sounds.
