[edit]

Byrd was one of the first artists to sign to Hospital Records in 1999.[4] His first Hospital singles were Do It Again and Changes.

Byrd second studio album Rave Digger was released in October 2010. The lead single "Ill Behaviour" (featuring I-Kay) has been supported by MistaJam, Annie Mac and Sara Cox on BBC Radio 1. The single was promoted to Radio 1's A-list on 8 September 2010.[7]

His album Golden Ticket was released in June 2013.[8]

''Danny Byrd'' is a British drum and bass DJ, producer and musician known for his melodic, vocal-led productions that have helped popularize accessible and crossover drum and bass tracks since the mid-2000s. His distinctive style blends classic jungle and drum and bass elements with pop sensibilities, resulting in anthemic tracks that have achieved significant success in the electronic music scene. Born in Bath, England, Byrd began his career in the late 1990s and gained prominence after signing to the influential Hospital Records label, where he released a series of notable singles and albums. His breakthrough came with tracks such as ''Ill Behaviour'' and ''Tonight'', the latter a collaboration with Netsky that became a staple in drum and bass sets and charts. Byrd's discography includes albums like ''Rave Digger'' (2010) and ''Golden Ticket'' (2013), which showcased his ability to fuse high-energy beats with catchy melodies and featured collaborations with various vocalists and producers. He remains an active figure in the genre, performing at major festivals and continuing to produce music that bridges underground drum and bass with mainstream appeal.

Early life

Birth and background

Danny Byrd was born on 4 May 1979 in Bath, Somerset, England. He grew up in Bath, a historic city in the South West of England. This West Country location served as his hometown throughout his early years.

Early musical influences

Danny Byrd's early musical influences drew from a diverse range of genres, including house, UK garage, R&B, and jungle, which played a formative role in shaping his approach to music production. He began producing music around 1997 at the age of 18, experimenting with hardware setups like the Akai sampler and Atari ST during his initial years. These genres, particularly mid-1990s jungle and early drum and bass, provided key inspiration from the sounds he grew up raving to, such as tracks by artists like Prisoners of Technology and TNT, influencing his later fusion of melodic and vocal elements in drum and bass. This foundation in house, UK garage, R&B, and jungle ultimately informed his distinctive style upon entering the professional scene.

Music career

Entry into drum and bass and Hospital Records

Danny Byrd entered the drum and bass scene by signing to Hospital Records in 1999, becoming one of the first artists on the newly established label. This association marked the beginning of his professional career in the genre, with the label providing a platform for his early productions blending soulful elements with drum and bass. His initial releases on Hospital included the singles "Do It Again" / "Dub It Again" and "Changes" / "Changed", which showcased his distinctive style. In 2000, Byrd's remix of London Elektricity's "Wishing Well" gained notable support from BBC Radio 1 DJ Fabio, helping to raise his profile within the scene. He followed this with a 2002 remix of High Contrast's "Music Is Everything", further establishing his reputation as a remixer on the label. In 2007, Hospital Records compiled his early material into the digital release Medical History, serving as a retrospective of his contributions up to that point. These foundational works laid the groundwork for his subsequent development as an artist.

Debut album and initial success

Danny Byrd's debut album, Supersized, was released on 26 May 2008 through Hospital Records. The album featured tracks including "Shock Out", "Gold Rush", "Weird Science", and "Red Mist", establishing his sound in the drum and bass scene following his earlier signing to the label. The "Red Mist VIP" mix achieved significant success by reaching number 1 on the UK Dance Chart for the week ending 25 July 2009. His second album, Rave Digger, followed in 2010 on Hospital Records and included prominent tracks such as "Ill Behaviour" (featuring I-Kay), which peaked at number 36 on the UK Singles Chart, and his remix of Liquid's "Sweet Harmony", which peaked at number 64 on the UK Singles Chart. Other highlights from the album were "Tonight" (featuring Netsky) and "We Can Have It All". This era represented Byrd's initial breakthrough, with his releases gaining traction through chart performance on UK singles and dance charts.

Later albums and label changes

Danny Byrd released the single "Blaze the Fire (Rah!)" featuring General Levy on September 24, 2012, through Hospital Records. The track combined dancehall influences with high-energy drum and bass production, serving as an early precursor to his next full-length project. His third studio album, Golden Ticket, arrived on June 24, 2013, still on Hospital Records. Described as his most ambitious work to that point, the album fused UK garage, house, and hip-hop elements within a 174 bpm breakbeat framework and featured collaborations with vocalists including Tanya Lacey, Mz Bratt, Serocee, and Rhymestar. After a five-year interval, Byrd returned with his fourth album, Atomic Funk, released on September 7, 2018, via Hospital Records. Presented as a funk-driven set of dancefloor-oriented tracks paying tribute to jungle roots while incorporating hip-hop and R&B-infused 174 bpm productions, the album included prominent singles such as "Salute" featuring MC GQ and "Hold Up the Crown" featuring Ky Lenz. In October 2021, Danny Byrd signed to Ministry of Sound, transitioning from his long-standing relationship with Hospital Records. His first release on the new label was the single "Selecta," a collaboration with grime artist D Double E.
