David John Besnard (born 21 January 1977 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian retired professional racing driver.

Key Information

Career history

[edit]

Starting in karts in 1991, he quickly proceeded into Formula Ford in 1995. After initial success, he had a major accident at Eastern Creek Raceway and broke his leg. In 1996 he made a comeback and won the Australian title.[1] He made a venture to the United States, with a small budget, and limited success. In 1998, he returned to win the U.S F2000 National Championship. 1999, saw David enter the US Formula Atlantic Championship. After a heavy crash at Nazareth Speedway, the team had to buy a new chassis and ran out of budget halfway through the season. 2000 saw Besnard again in the United States, running various Sports Car races, until Stone Brothers Racing picked him up for the Konica V8 Supercar Series and the Bathurst 1000. From there he drove with Stone Brothers for several seasons, with the highlight being winning the 2002 Queensland 500 with Simon Wills. He raced with Ford Performance Racing for one season in 2003, and WPS Racing for three seasons following that.

In 2004, with his links with WPS, a drive in the Champ Car World Series came about at Surfers Paradise. His finishing position of seventh is still the highest finish for an Australian at that event (but bettered by Ryan Briscoe's 2008 IRL win after the CCWS collapsed). After being dropped by WPS in 2006 Besnard has been racing in the New Zealand Touring Car Championship, picking up an endurance race co-driver role with Stone Brothers Racing in 2007, paired with James Courtney, which resulted in a second place at Bathurst.

''David Besnard'' is an Australian former professional racing driver known for his career in the V8 Supercars Championship and earlier successes in open-wheel series. Born on 21 January 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales, he won the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 1996 and the US F2000 National Championship in 1998 before transitioning to touring car racing. Besnard competed full-time in the V8 Supercars Championship during the early 2000s with teams including Stone Brothers Racing, Ford Performance Racing, and WPS Racing, achieving a career-best eighth-place finish in the drivers' standings in 2002 and securing race wins at the Queensland 500 in 2002 and a round in Tasmania in 2004. He also earned podium finishes at the Bathurst 1000 in 2007 and 2008. A serious crash at the 2011 Bathurst 1000, which involved his car catching fire, influenced his decision to retire from racing after 2012 to focus on family life. Following his retirement, Besnard and his wife established and operate Enhance Blinds and Awnings, a business in Australia.

Early life

Birth and background

David Besnard was born on January 21, 1977, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. No further details about his early family life, education, or childhood are documented in available sources.

Motorsport career

Entry and V8 Supercar participation

David Besnard made his V8 Supercar debut in 2000 at the Queensland 500 held at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich. This endurance race represented his entry into the Australian touring car series. In 2004, he made a one-off appearance in the Champ Car World Series while continuing his V8 Supercars participation.

ChampCar debut and results

David Besnard made his debut in the Champ Car World Series at the 2004 Lexmark Indy 300, contested on the Surfers Paradise street circuit on Australia's Gold Coast in Queensland. Driving for Walker Racing aboard a Reynard chassis with Ford Cosworth power, Besnard started the race from 17th position on the grid. He delivered a strong performance in the event, finishing seventh out of 19 starters and earning descriptions as a "remarkable" and "sensational" result that did Australian fans proud. The race represented a one-off Champ Car appearance for Besnard, with no further starts recorded in the series.

Acting career

Television appearances

David Besnard made a single television appearance as himself in the Australian travel series Getaway in 2005. He is credited as Self in one episode of the long-running program. This guest spot represents his only documented work on television. No additional television credits or appearances are recorded.

Film roles

David Besnard's sole credited film role came in the 2006 French drama 7 ans, where he portrayed Détenu 1 (Prisoner 1). This minor part in the film, which centers on themes of relationships and betrayal, marks his only known appearance in feature-length cinema according to major film databases. No other film credits, including lead or supporting roles, production involvement, or additional acting work in movies, are documented for him.

Personal life

David Besnard is known by the nickname Bezzy, a moniker commonly used in motorsport media and commentary. He is married, and his decision to retire from racing after 2012 was influenced by a desire to focus on family life. He and his wife operate Enhance Blinds and Awnings, a business in Australia. Limited additional personal details, such as education, are available in credible sources.

Legacy and public profile

Recognition and media presence

David Besnard's public recognition remains modest and primarily tied to his motorsport career in junior and touring car series, with no major awards or widespread acclaim documented in senior categories. His successes in lower formulae include winning the 1992 FIA European Karting Championship in the Junior A class, the 1996 Australian Formula Ford Championship, and the 1998 United States Formula Ford 2000 National Championship. In the V8 Supercars Championship, Besnard's most notable season came in 2002 when he finished eighth overall, earning one victory and three podium finishes across 29 races. He also secured occasional wins and strong results in the New Zealand V8s series, including a fourth-place championship standing in 2007 with five victories and 11 podiums. Despite consistent participation in Australian touring cars for over a decade and a single Champ Car appearance in 2004, he did not capture top-tier titles or receive prominent industry honors. Besnard's media presence has been limited, consisting mainly of race-specific reports, archival photography from events, and occasional interviews in specialized motorsport outlets related to particular incidents or results. His brief acting credits—a minor role as a prisoner in the 2006 film 7 ans and a self-appearance on the 2005 television series Getaway—have attracted negligible attention and do not appear to have expanded his profile beyond niche audiences. Overall, Besnard maintains a low public profile confined largely to dedicated motorsport followers, with no evidence of broader mainstream coverage or significant cultural impact.

Areas of limited documentation

Much of the available information on David Besnard is limited to basic biographical details and his professional activities in racing and acting. His early life lacks detailed documentation beyond his birth on January 21, 1977, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Personal details are similarly restricted, with only his height of 5′ 10¾″ (1.80 m) and nickname "Bezzy" noted in public records, while no further information on family, relationships, or private life appears in reliable sources. Besnard's acting career is represented solely by one credited role as a prisoner in the 2006 French film 7 ans, alongside a brief self-appearance in a 2005 television series episode, with no additional credits documented. Although his racing career is tracked through motorsport databases, full and exhaustive statistics across all events, minor series, and every year remain incomplete in publicly accessible sources. Overall coverage of his activities is incomplete and largely outdated, with most detailed records focusing on his racing participation through the mid-2000s and little reliable information on subsequent developments. These gaps underscore the importance of relying on verified primary sources, such as his IMDb profile for personal and acting details, and avoiding speculation on undocumented aspects of his life and career.
