Early life
Edouard "Edo" Kayembe Kayembe was born on 3 June 1998 in Kananga, Democratic Republic of the Congo.[1] Measuring 1.83 m in height, Kayembe grew up in his native country amid a challenging environment that limited structured football development.[1] His early exposure to the sport came through informal play in the streets and local settings of Kananga, fostering a passion that motivated him to seek greater opportunities abroad. In late 2016, at the age of 18, he relocated to Belgium to join the youth academy of R.S.C. Anderlecht.Youth career
Kayembe began his organized youth career in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, progressing through several local academies in his hometown of Kananga and later in Kinshasa. He first played for AS Efokan and US Tshinkunku de Kananga before moving to SC Rojolu and ultimately joining Sharks XI FC, where he continued his development until his transfer in late 2016.[1] In late 2016, at the age of 18, Kayembe signed his first professional contract with R.S.C. Anderlecht, transferring from Sharks XI Kinshasa to integrate into the Belgian club's renowned youth system.[8] Upon arrival, Kayembe trained and competed regularly in Anderlecht's youth setup, gaining exposure at the U21 level starting from the 2017–18 season, including scoring in a U21 Cup match against Eendracht Aalst in September 2018.[9][10] With the reserves, he quickly developed into a decisive figure in midfield, honing fundamental skills essential for his position.[11]Club career
Anderlecht
Kayembe made his senior professional debut for Anderlecht on 22 December 2017, entering as a substitute in the 65th minute during a 1–0 Belgian First Division A victory over Eupen.[12] This appearance marked his transition from the youth ranks to the first team at the age of 19.[1] Throughout his three seasons with Anderlecht from 2017 to 2020, Kayembe operated as a rotational central midfielder in the Belgian Pro League, providing depth in a competitive squad that included established players like Adrien Trebel and Farouk Miya.[8] He totaled 39 appearances across all competitions during this period, without recording any goals, often featuring as a substitute or in midweek fixtures to gain experience.[13] In the 2018–19 season, Kayembe saw increased involvement with 16 league appearances, contributing to Anderlecht's fourth-place finish in the Pro League and their progression in the Belgian Cup, where he played in one match. The following 2019–20 campaign brought further opportunities, with 21 appearances amid the season's disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, as he helped stabilize the midfield during a transitional period for the club that ended in a sixth-place standing. Despite these contributions, his role remained peripheral due to intense competition for starting positions. Seeking more consistent first-team minutes, Kayembe transferred to Eupen in September 2020 on a three-year deal, allowing him to continue developing in the Belgian top flight.[14]Eupen
In the summer of 2020, Edo Kayembe joined K.A.S. Eupen on a permanent transfer from Anderlecht for a reported fee of €1 million, signing a three-year contract to seek more consistent playing opportunities following a limited role at his previous club.[9] This move marked a significant step in his development, as he quickly established himself as a key player in Eupen's midfield during the 2020–21 Belgian Pro League season, making 23 appearances with 2 assists but no goals, often starting as a central midfielder responsible for linking defense and attack. His performances highlighted growing tactical awareness, adapting to a box-to-box role that emphasized progressive passing and defensive recoveries in a team fighting relegation. Kayembe's second season at Eupen in 2021–22 represented a breakout period, where he featured in 17 league matches, scoring 4 goals and providing 1 assist before his mid-season departure, contributing to a total of 40 league appearances and 4 goals across his two years with the club. His first professional goals came in the opening match of the campaign on 25 July 2021, netting against Club Brugge in a 2–2 draw, followed by strikes against Cercle Brugge (2–1 win on 17 September), Beerschot (3–0 win on 25 September), and Union SG (2–3 loss on 23 October), showcasing his improved finishing and ability to arrive in the box.[15] These contributions underscored his evolution into a more attacking central midfielder, with tactical flexibility allowing him to push forward while maintaining solidity in midfield transitions.[13] Kayembe left Eupen in January 2022, transferring to Watford for €4.7 million amid interest from several English clubs seeking to bolster their midfield options.[9] His time at Eupen proved pivotal, transforming him from a promising talent into a reliable starter with notable goal-scoring threat in a competitive league.[16]Watford
Kayembe transferred to Watford from Eupen on 7 January 2022 for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract until June 2026.[16] His mid-season arrival coincided with Watford's struggle in the Premier League, where he made 13 appearances without scoring, providing brief exposure to top-flight English football amid the club's eventual relegation. Adapting to the faster pace and physical demands of the English game proved challenging, exacerbated by a calf injury that kept him out from November 2022 until July 2023. In the 2022–23 Championship season, following the relegation from the Premier League, Kayembe featured in 21 matches without finding the net, contributing to Watford's 11th-place finish as the team stabilized in the second tier. He became a more regular presence in 2023–24, starting frequently in midfield and scoring 5 goals across 35 appearances, including key strikes that aided Watford's push up the table before they ended 15th. His form continued to develop in 2024–25, where he netted 8 goals in 45 outings, playing a pivotal role in the team's promotion efforts, though they again finished mid-table. Kayembe's breakthrough moment came on 11 November 2023, when he scored his first goal in English football during a 5–0 victory over Rotherham United, ending a long wait and boosting his confidence in the Championship. Subsequent notable goals included a direct corner against Millwall in the opening matches of the 2024–25 season and a leveler in a 2–2 draw at West Bromwich Albion in April 2024, highlighting his growing set-piece threat and box-to-box energy during Watford's promotion challenges.[8] As of November 2025, he has amassed 126 appearances and 13 goals for the club across all competitions. In the ongoing 2025–26 season, Kayembe has made 13 appearances without scoring, focusing on regaining match sharpness after international duties with DR Congo. With his contract set to expire in June 2026, his future at Vicarage Road remains uncertain, though his consistent performances have positioned him as a key asset in Watford's latest promotion bid under manager Javi Gracia.[1]International career
Youth international career
Kayembe was called up to the DR Congo under-23 national team for the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers.[17] He formed part of the squad that advanced past Rwanda in the first round and defeated Morocco 2–1 on aggregate in the second round during March 2019, with the first leg ending 2–0 in Kinshasa and the second leg a 0–1 loss in Rabat.[18][19] However, DR Congo was subsequently disqualified from the tournament by the Confederation of African Football for fielding an overage player, Arsène Zola, allowing Morocco to replace them in the finals.[17] These qualification efforts marked Kayembe's limited involvement at the youth international level, providing him with essential experience in structured international youth competitions ahead of his senior transition.Senior international career
Kayembe made his senior debut for the DR Congo national team, known as the Leopards, on 10 October 2019, coming on as a substitute in the 89th minute during a 1–1 friendly draw against Algeria in Bilda.[20] This appearance marked the beginning of his integration into the senior squad, where he quickly established himself as a versatile central midfielder capable of contributing both defensively and in attack. As of November 2025, Kayembe had earned 35 caps for DR Congo, scoring 2 goals, primarily in competitive fixtures.[21] His goals came in a 3–0 friendly victory over Sierra Leone on 27 September 2022, where he netted in the 72nd minute, and in a crucial 1–0 win against Guinea on 6 September 2024 during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, striking from outside the box in the 27th minute to secure qualification points.[20][22][23] These strikes highlighted his growing influence in midfield, often starting matches and providing stability in high-stakes qualifiers for both the FIFA World Cup and AFCON. Kayembe represented DR Congo at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.[24] Kayembe played a pivotal role in DR Congo's AFCON qualifying campaigns, featuring in several matches that helped secure progression to major tournaments.[20] He was named in the preliminary squad for the 2023 AFCON but withdrew due to a calf injury just before the tournament began in Ivory Coast, missing the group's advancement to the round of 16.[25] Despite the setback, his consistent performances in qualifiers underscored his importance to the team's midfield engine. In World Cup qualifying, he started and played the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 victory over Sudan on 14 October 2025, and featured in subsequent play-off matches, including a penalty shootout win over Nigeria around 16 November 2025 that secured DR Congo's spot in the intercontinental play-offs.[20][26] As a key midfielder in the Leopards' setup, Kayembe's blend of tenacity and vision has made him a regular under successive coaches, contributing to the team's competitive edge in African football.[20]Playing style and career statistics
Playing style
Edo Kayembe is an energetic, left-footed central midfielder who operates primarily as a box-to-box player, combining defensive duties with forward surges.[16] Known as a "warrior" for his relentless energy and commitment, he demonstrates a strong defensive work rate, often contributing to pressing efforts from midfield.[27] Among his key strengths are exceptional stamina that enables him to cover significant ground across the pitch in dynamic, transition-oriented systems, along with a reliable passing range that supports progressive ball movement.[28][1] His left foot aids in delivering accurate distributions, while his physical presence—standing at 183 cm with high strength ratings—allows him to thrive in counter-attacking scenarios.[29] Kayembe also shows competence in finishing when opportunities arise in the final third.[28] However, he has notable weaknesses in aerial duels, where his positioning and timing can falter, and in tackling, as he tends not to dive aggressively into challenges.[28] These areas have occasionally exposed limitations in high-pressure defensive situations, particularly during his early adaptation to more intense leagues. Kayembe's profile draws comparisons to versatile Belgian-trained midfielders like Leander Dendoncker, sharing a similar blend of physicality and box-to-box versatility honed in the Jupiler Pro League.[30] From his youth days in Kananga and early senior spells in Belgium, Kayembe has evolved into a more complete player, particularly since joining Watford in 2022, where he has adapted to the physicality of English football after initial challenges in justifying his transfer fee.[27] This progression is evident in his shift toward an advanced midfield role, enhancing his overall impact.[27]Club statistics
Edo Kayembe has accumulated 216 appearances and 18 goals across his club career in all competitions as of November 19, 2025. His statistics reflect a progression from limited senior exposure at Anderlecht to more consistent playing time during his loan at Eupen and subsequent tenure at Watford, where he has become a regular starter in the EFL Championship.[13] The following table provides a season-by-season breakdown of his appearances and goals, including league, cup, and European competitions where applicable.| Season | Club | Appearances | Goals |
