History
[edit]2016: Formation, debut with Hey Mama!
[edit]
On July 29, 2016, Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin appeared in a video titled "Reservoir Idols" during Exo's concert tour Exo Planet 3 – The Exo'rdium. They then released an original soundtrack titled "For You" for the SBS television drama series Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo on August 23, 2016. As a result, it was speculated that they would form Exo's first sub-unit. This was confirmed by SM Entertainment on October 5.[2] On October 23, they performed "For You" for the first time as a unit at the 2016 Busan One Asia Festival.[3] On October 24, the unit's name was announced to be Exo-CBX (shortened from ChenBaekXi), after the first letter of the members' stage names.[4]
On October 31, Exo-CBX released their debut extended play Hey Mama!, which contains five tracks with a variety of genres including electronic dance, R&B ballad and retro pop,[5] along with the music video for the title track.[6] The group made their debut performance on M Countdown on November 3.[7] On November 6, the "Reservoir Idols" video was officially released as a music video for "The One", one of the tracks from the album. Hey Mama! topped the Billboard World Albums chart[4][8] and South Korean's Gaon album chart. Later in November, Exo-CBX recorded a remake of the original soundtrack "Crush U" for the game Blade & Soul. They performed the song on November 18 at the N-Pop Showcase concert, part of the 2016 Blade & Soul world championship tournament.[9] On December 25, "Crush U" music video was released.[10]
2017–2019: Debut in Japan tour, Blooming Days and Magic
[edit]On May 10, through EXO's official Japanese Twitter account, SM announced that the sub-unit was going to have a Japanese debut during late May. They released their debut Japanese mini album, Girls, on May 24.
In January 2018, via an online program on LINE, they announced that they have prepared for their first Japan arena tour called "Magical Circus" in May and June.[11] The tour had eight shows with four cities in Japan, including: Yokohama, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Osaka.[11][12] On April 10, the group released their second Korean mini album Blooming Days.[13] CBX's first Japanese studio album, Magic, was released on May 9.[14][15]
In February 2019, it was announced that the group would have Special Edition concerts of their Japanese tour "Magical Circus" in April.[16][17]
2023–present: Contract disputes and new label
[edit]On June 1, 2023, it was announced that Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin were in the process of terminating their contracts with SM, and had filed a joint lawsuit against the company in regards to transparency of earnings.[18] On June 19, it was announced by SM that the contract dispute had been resolved, and the trio would be staying with the company moving forward.[19]
On January 8, 2024, it was announced that the subunit's future activities and the members' solo activities would be managed by INB100, an independent label established by Baekhyun in June 2022,[20] while their group activities still remains under SM Entertainment.[21][22][23]

Exo-CBX consists of three vocalists from the South Korean boy band EXO: Xiumin, Baekhyun, and Chen.[2] Xiumin, born Kim Min-seok on March 26, 1990, in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is the oldest member of the subunit and serves as its lead vocalist.[13] He enlisted for mandatory military service on May 7, 2019, and was discharged on December 6, 2020.[14][15] In January 2024, Xiumin joined INB100, the label established by fellow member Baekhyun, to conduct solo activities.[16] Baekhyun, born Byun Baek-hyun on May 6, 1992, in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is a main vocalist in the subunit.[17] Due to a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, he enlisted for public service military duty on May 6, 2021, and was discharged on February 5, 2023.[18][19] In June 2023, Baekhyun founded INB100 to manage his solo career and later extended opportunities to his CBX bandmates for their individual pursuits.[20] Chen, born Kim Jong-dae on September 21, 1992, in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is another main vocalist in the subunit. He enlisted for active-duty military service on October 26, 2020, and was discharged on April 25, 2022.[21] In January 2024, Chen joined INB100, where he has released solo albums and contributed to original soundtracks.[16] As EXO's first vocal subunit, Exo-CBX highlights the members' combined strengths in vocal harmony and emotive ballad performances, distinguishing it from the parent group's broader style.[2] As of October 2025, following resolution of contract disputes, the members continue individual activities under INB100 while EXO group activities are managed by SM Entertainment.[9]Formation
SM Entertainment announced on October 5, 2016, that EXO would debut its first official sub-unit in late October, consisting of vocalists Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin.[22] The sub-unit, later named EXO-CBX after the members' stage name initials, was formed to showcase their vocal talents separately from the full group's dynamic performances.[23][24] This selection aligned with SM Entertainment's broader subunit strategy for EXO, building on the group's earlier language-based divisions into EXO-K (Korean promotions) and EXO-M (Mandarin promotions) established at their 2012 debut to target diverse markets.[25] EXO-CBX marked a shift toward highlighting specific member strengths, allowing the trio to explore a distinct musical style while capitalizing on their individual popularity from acting, OST contributions, and variety show appearances.[26][22] Pre-debut promotion began in July 2016 with a humorous skit video titled "Reservoir Idols," featuring the three members as a fictional idol group, screened during EXO's EXO'luXion concert tour.[22] Building anticipation further, SM released a teaser video on October 22 titled "HOT DEBUT: EXO’S FIRST UNIT," followed by individual and group teaser images in the days leading to their mini-album release.[26][27]History

2017–2018: Japanese debut, Blooming Days, and Magic
In April 2017, Exo-CBX announced their entry into the Japanese market through a debut mini album titled Girls, which was released on May 24 by Avex Trax.[35] The EP marked the subunit's first official release in Japan, featuring seven tracks including the lead single "Ka-CHING!", an original Japanese song with upbeat electro-pop elements, alongside Japanese versions of their Korean debut track "Hey Mama!" and other songs like "Tornado Spiral" and "Miss You".[35] The album showcased the group's vocal harmonies and charismatic performances tailored for Japanese audiences, with multiple member-specific editions including photobooks to engage fans.[36] Building on their growing international presence, Exo-CBX released their second Korean-language extended play, Blooming Days, on April 10, 2018, via SM Entertainment. The EP included seven tracks led by the title song "Blooming Day" (花요일), a bright, flower-themed dance number emphasizing themes of budding emotions and growth, produced with input from the members to highlight their vocal prowess. While primarily targeted at Korean listeners, the release aligned with their Japanese promotions and later influenced content on their full-length Japanese album, demonstrating the subunit's ability to balance domestic and international activities during this period. Exo-CBX further solidified their Japanese foothold with their debut studio album Magic on May 9, 2018, also through Avex Trax, comprising 11 tracks with eight new originals.[37] The lead single "Horololo" served as the album's festive highlight, an energetic electro-pop track with playful lyrics about infatuation, accompanied by a vibrant music video featuring colorful circus-inspired visuals.[38] The album included Japanese adaptations of prior hits like "Ka-CHING!" and "Girl Problems", as well as solo tracks for each member—"Shake" by Xiumin, "Ringa Ringa Ring" by Baekhyun, and "Watch Out" by Chen—showcasing individual styles within the group's dynamic.[37] Magic achieved significant commercial success, topping the Oricon daily album chart on its release day with over 20,000 units sold, debuting at number three on the weekly chart with 41,173 copies in its first week, and rising to number one the following week.[39][7] To promote these releases, Exo-CBX embarked on their first Japan arena tour, titled Magical Circus Tour 2018, from May 12 to June 8, spanning four cities—Yokohama, Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Osaka—with eight performances that drew approximately 80,000 attendees.[40] The tour featured elaborate stage setups evoking a circus theme, with setlists blending tracks from Girls and Magic alongside high-energy choreographed performances of "Horololo" and "Ka-CHING!".[41] A live recording of the tour was later released on DVD and Blu-ray in September 2018, capturing the subunit's engaging fan interactions and vocal showcases.[41] During this period, Exo-CBX increased their visibility through key media appearances in Japan, including a surprise free showcase "Colorful Box" at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo on June 7, 2017, which attracted around 10,000 fans and featured live performances of debut tracks.[36] They also performed at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in Japan on November 29, delivering a remix of "Ka-CHING!" and "Hey Mama!" that highlighted their seamless transition to Japanese promotions. These events, combined with television spots on programs like Music Station, helped foster collaborations with Japanese artists and broadcasters, enhancing their appeal in the market.[38]2019–2022: Hiatus due to military enlistments
Exo-CBX entered a period of hiatus beginning in 2019 as its members fulfilled their mandatory military service obligations under South Korean law. The subunit's activities came to a halt following the success of their debut Japanese studio album, Magic, released in May 2018, which debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums Chart. Xiumin was the first member to enlist, joining the Republic of Korea Army as an active-duty soldier on May 7, 2019.[42] His service lasted approximately 21 months, and he was officially discharged on December 6, 2020, without returning to base due to COVID-19 protocols during his final leave.[43] Chen's personal life added a layer of attention to the group's hiatus when he announced his marriage to a non-celebrity on January 13, 2020, revealing that his fiancée was three months pregnant at the time.[44] The wedding took place privately later that year with only family in attendance. Chen enlisted for active-duty military service on October 26, 2020, shortly after Xiumin's discharge, serving for about 18 months before being released on April 25, 2022.[45] Baekhyun, the last of the trio to enlist, began his service as a public service worker on May 6, 2021, due to health considerations including hypothyroidism; he completed his 21-month term and was discharged on February 5, 2023.[46][47] The staggered enlistments resulted in no new group releases or promotions for Exo-CBX from 2019 through 2022, marking a complete pause in subunit activities. With all members serving consecutively, the focus shifted to individual pursuits for those temporarily available, such as Xiumin's debut solo OST "You Are Blessed" for the drama Mr. Queen in January 2021 and Chen's pre-enlistment solo single "Hello" in October 2020.[48][49] Baekhyun continued solo endeavors like his third mini-album Bambi in May 2021 before enlisting. Limited joint appearances occurred through pre-recorded contributions to EXO's full-group projects, such as the 2021 album Don't Fight the Feeling, where enlisted members including Xiumin, Chen, and Baekhyun participated via footage filmed prior to service.[46] This period underscored the challenges of mandatory service for K-pop groups, prioritizing national duty over collective promotions.2023–2025: Contract disputes, INB100 establishment, and EXO comeback exclusion
In June 2023, EXO-CBX members Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate their exclusive contracts, alleging unfair profit distribution, opaque management practices, and failure to provide settlement data as required by a 2023 amendment to the standard exclusive contract in the entertainment industry. The dispute escalated when SM countersued, claiming the members violated their agreement by launching individual activities without paying the agency 10% of revenue from solo endeavors.[50] Following mediation, the parties reached a settlement in September 2023, allowing EXO-CBX to continue group activities under SM while managing solo and subunit projects through INB100, a label founded by Baekhyun on June 23, 2023, with Chen and Xiumin joining for their individual promotions.[16] Under the agreement, the members committed to sharing 10% of their individual activity revenue with SM, aiming to resolve tensions and enable future EXO collaborations. From 2024 into 2025, disputes resurfaced over the settlement's implementation, particularly regarding revenue reporting and payment fulfillment, leading to multiple lawsuits where SM secured victories in October 2025 across six cases, including dismissals of EXO-CBX's claims of unfair contract terms and data disputes.[51] Despite this, EXO-CBX were excluded from SM's announcements for the group's December 2025 fan meeting and first-quarter 2026 album, with promotions proceeding as an OT6 lineup featuring Suho, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun, and Lay.[52] On October 29, 2025, INB100 issued a statement on behalf of EXO-CBX, reaffirming their commitment to participating in all EXO group activities, stating they had accepted SM's conditions during July 2025 discussions and pledged to pay the full 10% revenue share to restore trust.[53] SM responded by emphasizing that group activities remain separate from the resolved individual contract issues and that further mediation is needed.[54] The exclusions sparked significant fan backlash, with EXO-Ls criticizing the OT6 promotions as incomplete and insensitive amid the ongoing legal tensions, leading to calls for full OT9 reunions.[55] As of November 2025, no further agreement has been reached regarding their participation, and the exclusion from the announced EXO activities remains in effect amid continued fan backlash.[55][54] Since their last group album Magic in 2018, EXO-CBX have not released new subunit material, instead channeling efforts into solo projects under INB100, including Baekhyun's 2024 album Hello, World and individual tours.[56]Discography
Studio albums
Exo-CBX released their sole studio album to date following the success of their preceding extended plays in Korea, marking their expansion into the Japanese market with a full-length project.[8] Magic is the Japanese debut studio album by Exo-CBX, released on May 9, 2018, by Avex Trax.[57] Comprising 11 tracks, the album blends upbeat pop and R&B elements, incorporating dance-oriented rhythms and vocal harmonies tailored to appeal to Japanese listeners through a mix of original compositions and adapted versions of prior releases.[58] Production emphasized vibrant, energetic soundscapes with influences from J-pop, featuring contributions from producers like MEG.ME and Hitmanic to create a cohesive yet diverse listening experience.[59] The album debuted at number one on the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart, selling 41,173 physical copies in its first week and achieving significant commercial success in Japan as the subunit's first full-length effort.[7] Key highlights include the double title tracks "Magic" and "Blooming Day," which showcase the group's signature vocal prowess and playful energy; "Magic" delivers an infectious pop hook, while "Blooming Day" offers a brighter, R&B-infused melody drawing from their earlier work.[57] Other notable tracks feature solo performances, such as Xiumin's "Shake," Baekhyun's "Ringa Ringa Ring," and Chen's "Gentleman," highlighting individual strengths within the subunit's dynamic.[59]Extended plays

It peaked at number two on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart, selling 55,201 copies in its first week and a total of 62,804 units reported by Oricon. The EP did not achieve RIAJ certification, as sales fell short of the 100,000-unit threshold for gold status. In 2018, Exo-CBX returned to Korean releases with Blooming Days, their second Korean EP, issued on April 10, 2018, by S.M. Entertainment. The album received a platinum certification from KMCA in June 2018 for surpassing 250,000 units. The tour's visual elements, including circus-inspired costumes and pyrotechnics during high-energy tracks, were praised for their polished execution and alignment with the album's magical motif.[76][77] Setlists for the 2018 leg prominently featured hits spanning Exo-CBX's discography, opening with energetic renditions of "KING and QUEEN" and "Hey Mama!" from their debut EP, transitioning into tracks from Blooming Days like "Vroom Vroom" and "Blooming Day," and culminating in selections from Magic such as "Secret" and "Magic." Encores often included emotional ballads like "Beautiful (Good Night)" and fan favorites "Take Your Hand," with variations across shows to incorporate special stages, such as covers and unit performances. This structure not only promoted their latest album but also celebrated their Japanese debut singles, fostering a sense of continuity in their live repertoire.[78][79] Due to overwhelming demand, Exo-CBX extended the tour with a "Special Edition" in 2019, comprising five additional performances at two venues: Saitama Super Arena on April 16–17 and Kobe World Memorial Hall on April 27–29. These encore shows drew further crowds, pushing the overall tour attendance beyond 100,000 across 13 dates, and incorporated updated setlists with added tracks like "Playdate" while retaining core elements from the original production. The special edition reinforced the tour's success by introducing refined staging, including enhanced LED visuals and closer fan engagements, solidifying Exo-CBX's status as a prominent act in Japan's K-pop scene.[80][81]Fan meetings and showcases
